ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Samuel Fuller's Forty Guns gets the Criterion Blu-ray treatment - it looks gorgeous and the package includes A Fuller Life (2013) the feature-length documentary by Samantha Fuller about her father. Brilliant. Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema Daisies comes to Region FREE Blu-ray from Second Run and the new image advances handily beyond the previous DVD. Freedom, fun and beauty. Despite only being the US version, I enjoyed Ishirô Honda's Battle in Outer Space on Sony Blu-ray - no new extras but still sporting a professional commentary. A staple of 50-60's sci-fi wonder. Ray Milland made his directorial debut with the western A Man Alone - a decent entry in the genre and he followed that up with Lisbon - and adventurous crime flic also starring Maureen O'Hara and Claude Rains. Both have commentaries on Kino Blu-rays.

Battle in Outer Space BD - With his name firmly ensconced in film history as the creator of the Godzilla and Rodan films, director Inoshiro Honda continues to shape and mold a dramatic sci-fi story in Battle in Outer Space. As in the record-setting Star Wars sagas of the future, special effects also get star billing here. The nations of the earth are banding together to fight off invaders from outer space. At the core of their defense is an attack in which two space ships from the earth land on the moon -- the aliens have set up their base of operations there. But this pre-emptive strike is not enough because back on terra firma, heat-ray guns are called into action as the invasion of flying saucers swings into a full-scale operation. Parents will soon note that this outer space rumble is geared to the youngsters in the audience. Blu-ray Release Date: October 2nd, 2018

Forty Guns BD - Hollywood legend Barbara Stanwyck saddled up with writer-director Samuel Fuller for the pulp maestro’s most audacious western, a boldly feminist spin on the genre that pivots effortlessly between ribald humor, visceral action, and disarming tenderness. High-riding rancher Jessica Drummond (Stanwyck) commands a forty-strong posse of cowboys, ruling Cochise County, Arizona, without challenge. When U.S. Marshal Griff Bonell (Barry Sullivan) and his brothers arrive in town with a warrant for one of her hired guns, Jessica begins to fall for the lawman even as he chips away at her authority. Blu-ray Release Date: December 11th, 2018

A Man Alone BD - Ray Milland made his directorial debut with the Republic western A Man Alone. Milland also starred in the film, playing fugitive gunslinger Wes Steele. While escaping a lynch mob, Steele stumbles onto an Arizona ranch that has been quarantined due to Yellow Fever. During his enforced stay, he falls in love with sheriff's daughter Nadine Corrigan (Mary Murphy), who is as much a "lost soul" as Steele. The only hope the lovers have for a happy future is Steele's exoneration, but this won't happen so long as crooked town banker Stanley (Raymond Burr) holds all the cards. Blu-ray Release Date: November 6th, 2018

Lisbon BD - Filmed on location, Lisbon was the second directorial endeavor of actor Ray Milland. The story revolves around a Portugal-based American smuggler, Capt. Robert John Evans (Milland). Hired by attractive Sylvia Merrill (Maureen O'Hara), Evans agrees to sneak behind the Iron Curtain to locate Sylvia's husband Lloyd Merrill (Percy Marmont). It is understood that Evans is to bring Merrill back dead so that Sylvia can collect her husband's vast fortune, but the tables are turned on Sylvia and her wily co-conspirator, Aristide Mavros (Claude Rains). Blu-ray Release Date: November 6th, 2018

Daisies BD - A satirical, wild and irreverent story of rebellion, Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is perhaps also the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s. Two young women, both named Marie, revolt against a degenerate, decayed and oppressive society, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture. Defiant feminist statement? Nihilistic, avant-garde comedy? It remains a cinematic enigma and its influence is still felt today - from the extreme Baise-Moi to the mainstream Thelma & Louise and in the films of (amongst others) Jacques Rivette, Bertrand Blier, Catherine Breillat and Gregg Araki. Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2018
