Directed by Whit Stillman
USA 1990

One of the most significant achievements of the American independent film movement of the 1990s, writer-director Whit Stillman’s debut, Metropolitan, is a sparkling comedic chronicle of a middle-class young man’s romantic misadventures among New York City’s debutante society. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Stillman’s deft, literate script and hilariously high-brow observations mask a tender tale of adolescent anxiety.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Criterion - Region 'A' - Blu-ray (July 2012): Not much to say - the 1080P exports the film's rich textures and grain to a higher degree. This establishes a more film-like representation and continuing to support the original 1.66:1 appearance. We get a lossless soundtrack and all the extras from the 2006 SD remain including the commentary. It may have been because of a repeat viewing but I felt much closer to the characters on Blu-ray - getting a lot more out of the sly wit of the film. Those unfamiliar with Metropolitan should certainly give this a spin.

***

ON THE DVD: Possibly showing its Indie production roots, the image quality of this film does not appear to represent strong accuracy of colors. Skin tones are decidedly warm at times and many other colors are on the verge of bleeding into the dark backgrounds. This may have been intentional by director Stillman but he makes no mention of it in the commentary. I don't think it is the DVD transfer that has created this appearance but not having seen it theatrically - it is only my educated guess. The problematic (for some production companies) 1.66 ratio has been maintained. There is some dirt or digital noise visible in some of the sequences. The commentary is standard with Stillman talking about many technical details of the shooting process and others detailing their input into the project. Certainly this is a very worthy film and a great choice for Criterion to deviate from the many classics that are their present mainstay. This is another great DVD package from Criterion.
