The term "Ozploitation"
is often credited to Mark Hartley's 2008
documentary
Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story
of Ozploitation! - a blending of the
words 'Australia' or 'Aussie' and
'exploitation'. It became notable of certain
films of the Australian New Wave starting in the early
1970's and crossing over
from broader classifications of
Grindhouse, Exploitation, and Sexploitation.
This is not dissimilar to similarly-themed sub-genre
labeling such as 'Nunsploitation' (Behind
Convent Walls,
The Other Hell,
Dark Waters), 'Nazispoitation'
(Camp
7, The
Ilsa series - Ilsa:
The Wicked Warden, Ilsa:
Harem Keeper for the Oil Shieks, Ilsa:
She Wolf of the SS, Ilsa
the Tigress of Siberia)
and 'Blaxspoitation' (Shaft,
Black Dynamite,
Sheba, Baby,
Coffy,
Blacula).
There is plenty of Australian cinema that extends outside of the more campy Ozploitation sphere - excellent films such as Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout and Ted Kotcheff's Wake in Fright, both from 1971. They have been included on this page although they are not considered quintessential examples of the Ozploitation genre, as the Mad Max series would be recognized. There is a crossover with creature-features - notable in Razorback (Wild Boar), The Dark Age and Rogue (Alligator), The Howling III (marsupials), and The Pack (wild dogs) although it should be stated that Ozploitation does not simply include every film made in Australia.
Ozploitation movies have their own unique appeal encouraging a strong resurgence with more films embracing the subgenre since 2010 than in the 20 years previous (1990-2010) with new releases like 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road (the only Ozploitation title so far in 4K Ultra HD), plus a sequel to Wolf Creek, and a poor remake of the original Turkey Shoot also known as Elimination Game and the excellent psychological thriller Hounds of Love - as well as many other new entries leaning mostly to low budget horrors. Unfortunately, many feel that they aren't able of capturing the charisma and cache of the 70's and 80's Ozploitation fascination.
Not surprisingly, the leader in the output of Ozploitation on Blu-ray is Umbrella Entertainment out of Australia - much of it Region Free (playable worldwide.) There is Ozploitation support by other companies like Severin Films, Code Red, Synapse, Scorpion Entertainment, Vinegar Syndrome, even Arrow Video and Masters of Cinema as well as a 1/2 dozen, previously unreleased titles, by independent Blu-ray producers out of Germany. A great time to be a genre film fan!
We've added a large selection of Ozploitation on both Blu-ray and DVD as well as documentaries, trailer compilations, multi-film boxsets, books and a poster section. We hope to expand the listings as we come across more in the near future!
NOTE: These are select 'Ozploitation' films available on Blu-ray or DVD in chronological order. -Gary Tooze |
