directed by Bruce Beresford
Australia 1978
The counting house at Darcy's Securities where money from banks is divvied up into payroll is caseproof; that is, unless there is help from the inside; and that is exactly what night patrolman Eric Jackson (Terence Donovan, BREAKER MORANT), his armored car driver brother Bryan (Bryan Brown, F/X), and union steward Nacker (Edwin Hodgeman, MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME) are planning to do. As company president Lionel Darcy (Frank Wilson, BLACK ROBE) argues with his branch manager Conway (Lucky Grills, HOME AND AWAY) and his arrogant security supervisor Griffiths (Hu Pryce, COP SOP) over new directives after he has received an anonymous tip that he will soon be robbed and an armored car heist has resulted in the brutal killing of an innocent bystander, detective sergeant Ross (Alan Cassell, HARLEQUIN) goes on the take, offering to utilize his own criminal resources to root out the culprits. Jackson's process of setting up Jaguar-driving new patrolman Leo Bassett (Tony Bonner, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER) as a patsy for the robbery inadvertently draws the attention of Ross' associate Henderson (Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS) to him when he breaks into Bassett's surveilled apartment to plant evidence. Henderson offers not only to let Jackson go on with his plan but also to provide resources in exchange for a cut of the take, but neither side can trust one another, and they must not only worry about the not-so-naive Bassett but also former cop Dick Martin (Ed Devereaux, I BOUGHT A VAMPIRE MOTORCYCLE) who was demoted to patrolman after his armored truck was robbed but then suspciously finds himself back on the route and partnered with Bassett on the day that over twenty-million Australian dollars are supposed to pass throught he counting house. On the surface, MONEY MOVERS delivers the genre requirements but also provides commentary on infringements on the personal freedoms of workers in the name of security. Made after director Bruce Beresford's social drama hit DON'S PARTY but before his international hit BREAKER MORANT, MONEY MOVERS is a quick and dirty little heist thriller in which the increasingly convoluted plot ties back together nicely while also providing crowdpleasing gore and nudity. The film was based on the only novel by Devon Minchin which took its inspiration from his experiences as the owner of Australia's largest armoured car/security company Metropolitan Security Services. |

Umbrella does what it can with an imperfect, aged source. Opening credits are framed at 1.59:1 but the image for the rest of the film does not seem impeded at 1.78:1. Although shot in a rough-and-ready manner with heavy grain and color casts from the fluorescent lighting, the source is a little worn as well and perhaps a tad faded. The Dolby Digital 2.0 track is in good condition but the mono mix is nothing special. The main extra is a great retrospective featurette with director Beresford and stars Donovan, Brown, Bonner, and Richmond. The trailer is also included as well as trailers for other Beresford films from Umbrella. |
