(aka "Hunting Season" or "Open Season 2 - Die Jagd geht weiter" or "She Was Fair Game" or "Death Game: The Return of Jessica" )
directed by Mario Andreacchio
Australia 1986
Cassandra Delaney is Jessica, a smart
farmer girl who (I think) owns a safe-heaven for
animals. One day on the road she bumps into three
rednecks who almost forces her off the road. She
complains to the law, but no one cares, and soon the
rednecks is out for revenge - just for fun. So they kill
her animals and sexually abuse her (including putting
her undressed in front of one of their trucks, driving
like crazies at the same time). When they're finished
with her they leave her... and now she's ready for her
revenge! And it's gonna be brutal! Every Aussie movie seem to have car chases and this one sure has a lot of car-related stunts, from the insane beginning - which has some very cool climbing-on-top-of-vehicles-stunts - to the violent driving later, often with one of the characters - who must have been a stuntman also - doing the most dangerous stuff on top and around the car. Lotsa cool stuff. But this is mostly a fantastic and very simple story about a woman who just won't give up. Cassandra Delaney is great. This is the first time I've seen her, but she rules the screen every time she's in frame - and she's visible most of the movie, in one state or another. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Umbrella Blu-ray - February 18': Umbrella bring this 'Ozploitation' classic to 1080P in a stellar advancement over the 2000 1.33:1 DVD that was teaming with artifacts and combing. The image significantly advances with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio presentation and every facet is superior from detail to colors to grain texture. This is on a dual-layered disc with a decent bitrate and is dramatically ahead of the previously weak SD transfers. It looks just fine in-motion.DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel (24-bit) lossless audio, for the original English audio, with a score by Ashley Irwin (1999's The Thomas Crown Affair) with some syntho-rifts and the audio has a few, cringe-worthy, aggressive effects including fire, rifles, hood-mounting and more. The quality seems indicative of the original production - clear with heavy accents and reasonably consistent. There are no subtitles and the disc is Region FREE - playable worldwide. Extras offer a new wonderfully relaxed audio commentary with director Mario Andreacchio and writer Rob George with plenty of pauses and reminiscing about the production. There is a 1/4 hour extended interview with Cassandra Delany (star of Fair Game and ex-wife of John Denver) from Mark Hartley's 2008 Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! and some production featurettes; On Location with FAIR GAME', two short Behind the Scenes 1985 TV Reports and a 52-minute Dean Bennett (oft credited stuntman) documentary. There is an image gallery with film and video artwork as well as some storyboards and a trailer. But many may be pleased to have access to five Mario Andreacchio short films; Under Pressure (1984), Abduction... Who's Next? (1984), Break-in (1983), Taken by Storm (1983) and Vandalism (1981.) Umbrella have given us a quintessential Ozploitation classic in a much-welcomed HD release loaded with extras including a director commentary. It amounts to must own purchase for those desirable to own more of this category of modestly-budget efforts out of Australia post the introduction of the 'R' rating that was established in 1971. This is pure, notorious, exploitation cinema, vengeance, pulp! Strongly recommended! - Gary Tooze |
