"We Live Inside a Dream"

The television show began famously with the discovery of high-school coed Laura Palmer's (Sheryl Lee) plastic-wrapped body. Fire Walk with Me is the story of how she got that way. It is a necessarily grim story as the promiscuous and increasingly hysterical Laura juggles two teenage boyfriends, bad boy Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) and sensitive James Hurley (James Marshall); S&M playmates Jacques Renault (Walter Olkewicz) and Leo Johnson (Eric DaRe); and the many men she picks up while hooking. That list doesn't include "Bob" (Frank Silva), the man who she claims has been sneaking in through her bedroom window since she was 12 to rape her, and who she is beginning to suspect is actually her father, Leland (Ray Wise).

Like the series, Fire Walk with Me is filled with symbolism and dream imagery, much of it connected to the show's Man from Another Place (Michael J. Anderson) and the Red Room. In the film, the line between the everyday world and the Red Room is hazy with Laura meeting two of the room's denizens, Mrs. Tremont (Frances Bay) and her grandson; and FBI agents Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), Gordon Cole (Lynch), and Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) receiving a visitation from long-lost agent Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie) who claims to have visited there.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

NOTE: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray Boxset is reviewed HERE

ADDITION: Criterion - Region 'A' Blu-ray - September 2017': Not much to say - the Criterion image is a vast improvement - flesh tones gain normalcy, details tighten and colors are richer. There is some shifting in the frame with the Criterion showing more.... the French 1080P has a green hue next to the Criterion. This looks like the same source used for The Entire Mystery Boxset.

The audio is, likewise - all Criterion who use a very robust DTS-HD Master 7.1 track at 3919 kbps or the option of a 2.0 channel stereo lossless - both 24-bit (where the mk2 was 16-bit) and both in the original English language. Notably the 7.1 is far more dynamic and exports aggressive chords from the score by, prolific, Angelo Badalamenti - who has done much work with David Lynch including composing for Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Wild at Heart and The Straight Story among others. The Criterion Blu-ray has optional English (SDH) subtitles and is Region 'A'-locked.

Criterion also leap ahead with the supplements. The Missing Pieces is David Lynch's 2014 feature film which presents deleted scenes from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me assembled together in an untold portion of the story's prequel. For fans this is fascinating and runs 1.5 hours. Great addition! There are also interviews with Sheryl Lee (22:17 from Los Angeles - 2017),  Angelo Badalamenti (20:15 - 2017 New Jersey) and a 1/2 hour Between Two Worlds - Actor's Discussion (2014 - Los Angeles with David Lynch, Ray Wise, Grace Zabrinskie and Sheryl Lee) There are also two trailers as well as a Missing Pieces trailer and the package has excerpts from an interview with Lynch from Lynch on Lynch, a 1997 book edited by filmmaker and writer Chris Rodley. Twin Peaks fans who can never get enough will cherish the Criterion for its superior a/v and bountiful extras. Strongly recommended!

ADDITION: MK2 - Region 'B' Blu-ray - December 2010': MK2 has taken their previous HD-master and put it to English-friendly 1080P Blu-ray disc. It has the same color hues as the 2004 DVD. It looks decent - there is some depth, detail rises and the 2 1/4 hour feature covers more than 30 Gig with a reasonable bitrate. Let's hope this source can be improved upon.

Audio also advances with a lossless track and there are optional French subtitles. The disc is region 'B'-locked.

Extras duplicate the last PAL DVD with the 20-minute Electronic Press Kit including a short featurette, interviews and a trailer. Unfortunately, we lose the 40-page collector's book (which was in French). No sign of this in Region 'A' and fans of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me will wish to indulge for the a/v upgrade.

VIDEO: The Region 1 is unquestionably sharper, but has some excess blue ( see the TV screen in 3rd capture) and it is slightly zoomed on with some picture being lost on all 4 edges. Saying that though skin tones and contrast levels are far superior on the NTSC edition and that is our recommendation.

AUDIO: Both have a DTS English track. But the sound on Jacques Renault' bar scene is still far to low, and not subtitled on the PAL edition (if French subs are not displayed). The NTSC does offer an additional 2.0 track for the original English.

EXTRAS: There are too few. I'm still waiting for a sizeable edition (announced by MK2 for 2005) with a David Lynch's commentary track, but the PAL release has a 40 page booklet and some interviews.
