directed by Martin Scorsese
USA 1993

No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like Martin Scorsese. With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, Edith Wharton, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan. THE AGE OF INNOCENCE tells the story of Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), whose engagement to an innocent socialite (Winona Ryder) binds him to the codes and rituals of his upbringing. But when her cousin (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives in town on a wave of scandal after separating from her husband, she ignites passions in Newland he never knew existed. Swelling with exquisite period detail, this film is an alternately heartbreaking and satirical look at the brutality of old-world America.

***

In Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Edith Wharton's 1920 novel, romance between an upper-class gentleman and an ostracized lady is doomed by 19th century New York society. Shortly after his engagement to blandly genteel May Welland (Winona Ryder), Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is reacquainted with May's scandalous cousin Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer). As the head of an esteemed family, Archer initially uses his standing to try to rehabilitate Ellen's reputation, but he finds himself increasingly drawn to her disregard for the codes of New York manners. Bound by ingrained society mores and his peers' insinuations, Newland tries to dodge his growing passion by rushing his marriage to May, but he cannot keep himself from confessing his love to Ellen. Recognizing that Newland could never abandon his sense of honor and be happy, Ellen pushes Newland to May and leaves town. The marriage proceeds as dictated, but when Newland unexpectedly sees Ellen again, he yearns for the affair to come to fruition. However, he underestimates not only what May knows but also her ability to uphold the rules of propriety. Sumptuously shot by Michael Ballhaus, the film offers meticulously designed costumes and settings that evoke a culture as seductively beautiful in its surfaces as it is stifling in its rituals. Unspoken emotions are expressed through such details as yellow roses or a clipped cigar, a fade to red or a single camera move. Using Wharton's original prose to comment on the setting's hypocrisies, Joanne Woodward's voiceover narration suggests how much decisive power is buried beneath dainty femininity. The Age of Innocence received five Oscar nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Ryder and Best Screenplay for Scorsese and Jay Cocks, and a win for Best Costumes. Although The Age of Innocence seemed like a departure from Scorsese's prior work, Newland is as much at the mercy of his circle's Byzantine structure (and his own conscience) as are Scorsese's more familiar mobsters; Newland's persecutors just wear white tie and tails.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Criterion - Region 'A'  Blu-ray - February 2018: Criterion's transfer is described as a "New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Martin Scorsese". I cannot distinguish much difference in the German Sony Blu-ray image from 2014. The Criterion nudges ahead technically but that may only be notable in-motion. I couldn't see much between the two, very strong HD, visuals. Colors are well-supported and contrast is at a high level. The 1080P transfers both look very impressive adding depth not present on the SD.

Audio is pretty much the same with DTS-HD Masters in 5.1 surround (24-bit) for both Blu-rays.   The score is by Elmer Bernstein (Love with the Proper Stranger, The Bride at Remagen, The Comancheros, The World of Henry Orient, Kings of the Sun, Hud, To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer and Smoke) along with some music from Faust (Opera), Beethoven 's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op 13, Johann Strauss' Radetzky March, Artist's Life, Tales From The Vienna Woods and Emperor Waltz Op 437. The audio has some mild separation and it all sounds ass beautiful as the image looks. Criterion also has optional English subtitles, while Sony have multiple foreign language DUBs and subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray - Criterion's disc is Region 'A'-locked in the US (Region 'B'-locked in the UK.)

The Sony has no extras. Criterion include four new (2017) interviews. The first has Martin Scorsese who talks with Kent Jones about his approach to the adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel The Age of Innocence - for 24-minutes. In the 23-minute interview with co-screenwriter Jay Cocks he discusses Wharton's novel and his collaboration with Scorsese on the adaptation. Production designer Dante Ferretti talks with Antonio Monda, artistic director for the Rome Film Festival about Ferretti's collaboration with Scorsese on The Age of Innocence and his approach to set design. It runs 19-minutes. Lastly, costume designer Gabriella Pescucci, who won an Academy award for her work on The Age of Innocence also talks with Monda about designing the film's period costumes. Innocence and Experience is a 25-minute documentary on the making of The Age of Innocence which was produced and directed by Laura Davis that originally aired on HBO in 1993. The programme features director Martin Scorsese; producer Barbara De Fina, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder and others. Thee is a trailer for the film and the package has a liner notes booklet with an essay by critic Geoffrey O'Brien.

Predictably Criterion vault ahead with their many supplements but the leaner and significantly cheaper Region FREE Sony offers an equally strong presentation for those willing to accept a bare0-bones edition of this marvelous film. It's great to have the options and this is overwhelmingly recommended!
