ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Arrow continues its stellar job in putting Woody Allen films to Region 'B' Blu-ray. Brilliant Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo and A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy were reviewed this week and have max'ed out bitrates and gives more support for purchasing the Woody Allen: Six Films - 1979-1985 Blu-ray package. NOTE: Woody Allen: Seven Films - 1986-1991 has been announced for February 20th, 2017 with Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Radio Days (1987), September (1987), Another Woman (1988), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Alice (1990) and Shadows and Fog (1991.) Also in the UK, Indicator is pumping out definitive Blu-ray editions of classic films. To Sir, With Love, Richard Fleischer's 10 Rillington Place and Stanley Kramer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner are now available in impressively stacked Blu-ray packages. For those, who have been tentative till now, hesitant to 'dip their toes' in Smilebox Curved Screen Simulation - The Best of Cinerama may be the Blu-ray release to finally indulge in. The 4th segment of the 'Project Shirley' Blu-ray sets by Milestone; The Magic Box: The Films of Shirley Clarke. 1927-1986 is released appealing to more than Avant-garde cinema fans. It is a fascinating effort. One of the superior sorority slasher efforts from the 80's had made it to Blu-ray; The Initiation is one of the more polished to emerge in the latter days of the slice-and-dice boom. On DVD Eric reviewed Q Vol-1 from the the early days of Spike Milligan's madcap comedy series.

"...Then, like all dreamers, I was possessed of a sudden with supernatural powers and passed like a spirit through the barrier before me. The drive wound away in front of me, twisting and turning as it has always done.".. - Rebecca (1940)

Have a graceful week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner BD - Joanna (Katharine Houghton), the beautiful daughter of crusading publisher Matthew Drayton (Tracy) and his patrician wife Christina (Hepburn), returns home with her new fiance John Prentice (Sidney Poitier), a distinguished black doctor. Christina accepts her daughter's decision to marry John, but Matthew is shocked by this interracial union; the doctor's parents are equally dismayed. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 28th, 2016

The Magic Box: The Films of Shirley Clarke. 1927-1986 BD - Shirley Clarke was brilliant, scandalous, bold, and incredibly talented. Had she been a man, film historians would have long ago placed her in the pantheon of great auteurs, alongside Orson Welles and John Cassavetes. Today, her triumph can be recognized in her ability to be herself— one of the great originals of her time. A true artist, Clarke combined her innate impishness and sense of adventure with a dancer’s aesthetic and her tremendous drive to battle injustice to make films that dazzle, challenge, and beguile the audience. The Magic Box is the culmination of Milestone’s “Project Shirley” — an eight-year-long effort to explore the films and life of this extraordinary woman. Blu-ray Release Date: November 15th, 2016

The Best of Cinerama BD - The Best of Cinerama is comprised of all the greatest thrills of Cinerama, from the breathtaking roller coaster ride to the visit to La Scala, Milan, for Aida; from the hurtling bobsled run, to the stirring dances of the African Watusis. Made up of over 20 such exciting highlights, the film is not only an historic compilation, but also a stand-alone thrill-a-minute experience. Blu-ray Release date: November 22nd, 2016

To Sir, With Love BD - Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) is an engineer who loses his job and turns to teaching in a tough East End school. He immediately faces hostility from his students - the graduating class - who are determined to break his spirit. However, Thackeray counters by treating the teenagers as young adults, attempting to prepare them for life in the outside world. Gradually, as he takes the class on field trips to museums and similar outings, Thackeray earns both their affection and respect. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 28th, 2016

10 Rillington Place BD - As infamous serial murderer John Reginald Christie, Richard Attenborough is just exaggerated enough to remain credible. With his vaguely threatening countenance (shiny bald pate, pupil-magnifying spectacles) and lulling wisp of a voice, this genial strangler might be the bastard child of anarchy and politesse—or at least Elmer Fudd and Droopy. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 28th, 2016

Zelig BD - Mockumentaries are ten a penny these days, but in 1983 Zelig offered something startlingly new, as heavyweight talking heads such as Saul Bellow and Susan Sontag discuss an entirely fictional character who is nonetheless strangely convincing. Leonard Zelig (Woody Allen) is a man so introverted and insecure that he has developed the ability to blend perfectly into the background of any given situation, regardless of the personality or even ethnicity of the people around him. But when he inadvertently becomes famous as the human chameleon after the media takes too keen an interest in his therapy sessions with Dr Eudora Fletcher (Mia Farrow), Zelig is faced with an unprecedented challenge: how do you fade into the background when the spotlight is firmly upon you? Blu-ray Release date: December 12th, 2016

The Purple Rose of Cairo BD - In the Depression-hit New Jersey of the early 1930s, lonely waitress Cecilia (Mia Farrow) becomes addicted to the products of the Hollywood dream factory as a means of briefly escaping her bleak life and loveless marriage. In the comforting darkness of the cinema, she becomes so obsessed with one film in particular, the adventure-romance The Purple Rose of Cairo, that its central character Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels) notices her in the stalls and steps through the screen to greet her. But how can the rest of the film proceed without him? And what if other actors get similar ideas above their station? Blu-ray Release date: January 9th, 2016

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy BD - Woody Allen's first period piece since Love and Death seven years earlier is set in the early 1900s, and revolves around six characters getting together in a country house in upstate New York to celebrate the upcoming wedding of the distinguished philosopher Leopold (Jose Ferrer) and his much younger fiancée Ariel (Mia Farrow, in the first of thirteen appearances in Allen's films). Blu-ray Release date: December 12th, 2016

The Initiation BD - The Initiation ranks amongst the finest of the college-based stalk-and-slash flicks. Kelly's new sorority has a special initiation ritual in store for her an after-hours break-in of her father s department store. But what begins as a night of harmless college fun turns sour when, once inside the enormous mall, Kelly and her fellow pledges find themselves locked in for the night... with a deadly intruder stalking the corridors. Blu-ray Release Date: November 7th-8thth, 2016

Q Vol-1 - Relive the early days of Spike Milligan s madcap comedy series. Get set for a hilarious stop-motion standing still race, meet Jehovah s burglars, converse with the Queen s chicken, engage with highly dubious, diplomatically immune Arab sheiks, and take the disaster holiday of a lifetime with Bermuda Triangle Tours. Rarely seen surviving episodes of the 1969 series Q5 feature seasoned satirists John Wells and Richard Ingrams, Fanny Carby as the prototype sexy foil, and the guest voice of Harry Secombe trapped inside an elephant. As the show resumes in 1975 and 1978 with Q6 and Q7, Spike and John Bluthal are joined by Peter Jones, Bob Todd, Chris Langham, John it s the little things that count Rappaport and a busty and barely clad Julia Breck. Bawdiness and borderline bad taste prevail, mixed in with musical numbers by Ed Welch, Alan Clare, Spike himself and other star performers. Gloriously frivolous and edgy gags and sketches from an undisputed comedy genius and his faithful cohorts. DVD Release Date: November 21st, 2016
