Shirley Clarke was brilliant, scandalous, bold, and incredibly talented. Had she been a man, film historians would have long ago placed her in the pantheon of great auteurs, alongside Orson Welles and John Cassavetes. Today, her triumph can be recognized in her ability to be herself— one of the great originals of her time. A true artist, Clarke combined her innate impishness and sense of adventure with a dancer’s aesthetic and her tremendous drive to battle injustice to make films that dazzle, challenge, and beguile the audience. The Magic Box is the culmination of Milestone’s “Project Shirley” — an eight-year-long effort to explore the films and life of this extraordinary woman. Working with film archives and Clarke’s daughter Wendy, Milestone has been able to explore the wide range of the filmmaker’s output. The Magic Box includes Clarke’s Academy Award-winning documentary, Robert Frost: A Lover’s Quarrel With the World, experimental shorts, “lost” films, unfinished projects, outtakes, and a lifetime of home movies. Disc one highlights Clarke’s brilliant experimental works. Disc two compiles her gorgeous dance films. Disc three features Robert Frost: A Lover’s Quarrel With the World, Christopher and Me, and a wealth of home movies from Clarke’s long life. The Magic Box includes a brochure to put all her work in context and be a guide to the treasures that await. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.
ADDITION: Milestone - Region FREE - Blu-ray (November 2016): Milestone's The Magic Box: The Films of Shirley Clarke. 1927-1986: Project Shirley Volume 4 is spread over three dual-layered Blu-rays and encompasses an incredible amount of material. The discs are divided as 'Experimental' (with Brussels Loops and others) on disc 1, 'Dance' (which includes In Paris Parks and Four Journeys Into Mystic Time) on Disc 2 and the third has Robert Frost and home movies.
This is the 4th segment of the 'Project Shirley' Blu-ray sets by Milestone. The first was The Connection, the second was Portrait of Jason, the third was Ornette and this, The Magic Box: The Films of Shirley Clarke. 1927-1986, is the last entry.
The 1080P image, of course, varies and is dependant on the production strength (much of it 16mm) and available material source condition. Much of it can look quite pleasing - I've tried to give a reasonable sample in the screen captures below - which should provide you with a general idea of the visual quality. I've compared one frame from Clarke's Bridges-Go-Round (1958) that I also had seen on Image Entertainment's Treasures IV: American Avant-Garde Film, 1947-1986 DVD package.
The audio is liner PCM (16-bit) and is less of a factor on the presentation - and again, at the mercy of the source material. The only segment that offers optional English subtitles is Robert Frost: A Lover’s Quarrel With The World on disc 3.
I quite enjoyed the 'Dance' section but also Brussels Loops, Shirley Dancing – A Photo Gallery, 24 Frames Per Second, Robert Frost: A Lover’s Quarrel With The World, as well as the 'Home Movies'. Although much of the first 2 discs are evoking a feeling - spanning memory and emotion - different for every viewer. It's a great set - appealing more to Avant-garde fans I would think. It kinda made me want to watch Portrait of Jason again. There are 50 entries here and those keen on this pioneering filmmaker should definitely indulge. |
