(aka 'Decasia: The State of Decay')
directed by Bill Morrison
USA
2002
Decasia (a silent film) is composed entirely of decaying, nitrate-based footage which seems to melt, burn, drip and deteriorate before our very eyes. In his search for striking examples of emulsion deterioration, Morrison examined close to a thousand archive prints from numerous collections. The haunting footage is set to an eerily dissonant symphonic score by Michael Gordon. The entire viewing experience is surreal and fascinating. For the avant-garde, I strongly recommend it!out of |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Icarus - Region 'A' Blu-ray - December 2012': I can see chroma now in the BFi DVD that it not present in the Icarus 1080P. The most significant superiority using the higher resolution is in the contrast. You can discern detail far better via the Blu-ray. This is an essential upgrade for fans of the avant-garde. Audio comes in two flavors - both lossless (DTS-HD) - 2.0 channel or 5.1. The latter sounds quite fetching. Bonus includes Morrison's Light is Calling - a short 8-minute film. Great little package from Icarus... nice to see this reach HD status. If you want to make a crowd silent - put this on and watch as they can't turn away! ***
ON THE BFI DVD: There is so much decay and purposeful damage in these shots that it is almost impossible to be critical of the image quality. The film is short and at least could have had a director commentary, but who knows how that might have effected the visceral impacting viewing experience. Perhaps it was meant to be as is. The audio track is wonderful! There is a Region 1 (and another Region 2 ) DVD of this work but I have not compared -I'm told this is a port of the extra-less Region 1 DVD. There is a nice extra of the audio interview. This is a great DVD to show off to friends. I love having it in my collection. It is for times when you can't decide what to watch at all! out of |
