ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): A fairly easy first pick this week in Powell + Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - the restoration on Blu-ray looks magnificent. Bravo chaps! Mario Bava's Baron Blood in 1080P takes some big strides beyond the DVD editions, ditto for Bill Morrison's Decasia with mega-improvement in the Blu-ray in the area of contrast. I've always liked Sometimes a Great Notion - a hard to forget film. The Well-Digger's Daughter is a very good film and looks outstanding on Blu-ray. Hans Christian Andersen captured some of the Technicolor brilliance - a good family film. Trouble With the Curve is lightweight stuff - but still has something to offer - as does the atrociously awkward Miami Connection in a kind of Ed-Wood-esque manner. I'll dismiss Death Ship outright as never achieving its potential. Eric covered the refreshing Elvis and Madonna as well as a weak horror effort; 6 Degrees of Hell. Jingle Bells..

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Well-Digger's Daughter BD - A bitter class war erupts between two families after the daughter of a humble well digger is impregnated by the son of a wealthy shopkeeper. Aging widower Pascale Amoretti (Daniel Auteuil) works hard to provide for his six daughters. As the first shots of World War I are fired, his eldest daughter Patricia (Astrid Bergés-Frisbey) returns home from Paris to help raise her younger siblings. Meanwhile, Pascale wants to see Patricia marry his longtime assistant Felipe (Kad Merad), a hard worker who would make a loving husband. But shortly after arriving back home, Patricia has a fling with Jacques Mazel (Nicolas Duvauchelle), a fighter pilot from a wealthy family, who then disappears to the front lines after getting Patricia pregnant. At first, the Mazels are furious, accusing the impoverished Amorettis of using the situation to stake a claim on their fortune. When Jacques goes missing in action, however, the Mazels quickly realize that Patricia's unborn child may be their only link to the son who sacrificed his life fighting for their country. Blu-ray Release date: December 24th, 2012

Elvis and Madonna - In Copacabana, lesbian photographer Elvis is hired to deliver pizzas in the night shift on her motorcycle. Her first assignment is a delivery to the transvestite hairdresser Lady Madonna. But when Elvis arrives at Madonna's apartment, she discovers that her client has been beaten up and robbed by her lover Joao Tripé. Elvis befriends Madonna, who invites Elvis to photograph her performance in a nightclub. Before long, the two fall in love and move in together. But Elvis' decision to sell incriminating photos of Joao may come back to haunt her and Madonna as he promises revenge... DVD Release Date: October 30th, 2012

6 Degrees of Hell - In Northeast Pennsylvania, Uncle Jack s Hotel of Horror is besieged by a dark presence after two friends of Uncle Jack, Chris and Kellen, unwittingly release a deadly evil by transporting local psychic Mary Wilkins collection of haunted objects as props for the popular tourist attraction. At the same time, a local TV ghost hunter confronts an evil that has haunted him all his life one he believes is responsible for his sister s death years ago. DVD Release Date: November 27th, 2012

Decasia BD - Decasia (a silent film) is composed entirely of decaying, nitrate-based footage which seems to melt, burn, drip and deteriorate before our very eyes. In his search for striking examples of emulsion deterioration, Morrison examined close to a thousand archive prints from numerous collections. The haunting footage is set to an eerily dissonant symphonic score by Michael Gordon. The entire viewing experience is surreal and fascinating. Blu-ray Release Date: December 3rd, 2012

Baron Blood BD - In director Mario Bava's sumptuous Technicolor Gothic horror classic, an American student Peter Kleist travels to Austria on summer holiday to learn more about his family roots. By reciting an incantation on a piece of ancient parchment, he succeeds in scaring up a genuine ancestor--Baron Otto von Kleist, a 16th century sadistic nobleman whose appetite for cruelty earned him the nickname ''Baron Blood''. Before Peter can reverse the incantation, the parchment burns...How many innocents will die before Peter learns how to send the evil Baron back to the hell from whence he came? Blu-ray Release Date: December 11th, 2012

Trouble With the Curve BD - Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood) has been one of the best scouts in baseball for decades, but, despite his efforts to hide it, age is starting to catch up with him. Nevertheless, Gus-who can tell a pitch just by the crack of the bat-refuses to be benched for what may be the final innings of his career. He may not have a choice. The front office of the Atlanta Braves is starting to question his judgment, especially with the country's hottest batting phenom on deck for the draft. The one person who might be able to help is also the one person Gus would never ask: his daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams), an associate at a high-powered Atlanta law firm whose drive and ambition has put her on the fast track to becoming partner. Against her better judgment, and over Gus's objections, Mickey joins him on his latest scouting trip to North Carolina, jeopardizing her own career to save his. Blu-ray Release date: December 18th, 2012

Death Ship BD - After a passenger liner is rammed and sunk by a derelict German freighter from World War II, the handful of survivors (which include George Kennedy and Richard Crenna) manage to board the unmanned hulk but soon discover that their perils have just begun. Apparently the freighter served as a kind of floating Nazi torture dungeon, and its corridors and bulkheads have somehow become imbued with the very forces of evil that once tormented its captive cargo. When the rather lethargic resident ghosts finally work up the energy to harass their new visitors, viewers are treated to a gallery of decomposing corpses, a supernaturally-triggered case of acne, and the somewhat bland demonic possession of Kennedy, who suddenly declares himself Nazi commandant for a day. This rusty, waterlogged variant on the standard haunted-house theme begins with the interesting premise of ship-as-predator, but provides nothing new in the way of shocks, effects or atmosphere -- and the sleepwalking leads don't help matters either. Blu-ray Release date: December 18th, 2012

Hans Christian Andersen BD - Hans Christian Andersen was Sam Goldwyn's final production for RKO Radio release, and also the producer's last Danny Kaye vehicle. The Moss Hart-Myles Connolly screenplay largely disregards the facts concerning Denmark's great storyteller, opting for a fanciful blend of comedy, fantasy, romance and music. As played by Kaye, Hans Christian Andersen starts out as a small-town cobbler whose gift for spinning fairy tales is keeping the local kids from attending school. Asked to leave town, Hans heads to Copenhagen to seek his fortune as a writer. After having his heart broken by the beautiful ballerina Doro (Jeanmaire), Hans finds solace--and happiness--in the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of children the world over are devoted to his enchanting fantasy stories. The lilting Frank Loesser score includes such tunes as "No Two People," "The King's New Clothes," "Wonderful Copenhagen," "Inchworm," "The Ugly Duckling," "Thumbelina," and the title song. Though Hans Christian Andersen was a smashing box-office success, and as a bonus earned five Oscar nominations. Blu-ray Release date: December 18th, 2012

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp BD - It's almost impossible to define this 1943 masterpiece by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It was ostensibly based on a cartoon series that satirized the British military class, yet its attitude toward the main character is one of affection, respect, and sometimes awe; it was intended as a propaganda film, yet Churchill wanted to suppress it; it has the romantic sweep of a grand love story, yet none of the romantic relationships it presents is truly fulfilled, and the film's most lasting bond is one between the British colonel (Roger Livesey) and his Prussian counterpart (Anton Walbrook). Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2012

Miami Connection BD - The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song “Against the Ninja,” Mark (kung-fu master/inspirational speaker Y.K. Kim) and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug world’s smelliest underbelly. It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”...and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION! Blu-ray Release date: December 11th, 2012

Sometimes a Great Notion BD - Paul Newman makes his directorial debut in the sweeping saga Sometimes a Great Notion. Based on the best-selling novel from author and icon Ken Kesey (his follow-up to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), the story focuses on a two-fisted Oregon family that bucks their close-knit timber community to deliver a shipment of logs in defiance of a strike. In the process, one man is killed, the family patriarch Henry (Henry Fonda) is injured, and the eldest son Hank (Paul Newman) almost loses his wife (Lee Remick) to his half brother (Michael Sarrazin). Filled with complex characters and issues that still resonate today, Sometimes a Great Notion is an intense and riveting portrait of life set against the rugged backdrop of logging.
