At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career.

ADDITION: Criterion (2021) - Region 'A' - Blu-ray (January 2021): "In the Mood For Love" is debatably the coveted title in Criterion's upcoming World of Wong Kar Wai Blu-ray set. This has a "New 4K digital restoration approved by director Wong Kar Wai".

Wong Kar Wai on his New Restorations: "During the process of restoring the pictures that you are about to watch, we were caught in a dilemma between restoring these films to the form in which the audience had remembered them and how I had originally envisioned them. There was so much that we could change, and I decided to take the second path as it would represent my most vivid vision of these films.

As the saying goes: “no man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

Since the beginning of this process, these words have reminded me to treat this as an opportunity to present these restorations as a new work from a different vantage point in my career.

Having arrived at the end of this process, these words still hold true.

I invite the audience to join me on starting afresh, as these are not the same films, and we are no longer the same audience."

Probably the most noticeable difference in the 2012 Criterion 1080P and the new 2021 4K restoration Blu-ray involve the colors and a 'new' yellow-jade-green hue. While initially I was scratching my head about this 'look' - as the film ran the rich tones began to look refreshing making primary colors; notable reds, greens, blues etc. - look far richer. I was flummoxed at first but I can tell you I appreciated this appearance more and more during my viewing experience. It remains, in my eyes, one of the most beautiful films I can recall. The new image is also a shade brighter in spots and has some framing differences from the 2012 Criterion Blu-ray appearing to have lost a shade of information (still 1.66:1) - seeming to have marginally been 'zoomed-in'. The 2021 Criterion HD presentation has a higher bitrate than the 2012 transfer (by almost 50%) and seeing it on my system was incredible. Now, there were two minor infractions I'm administering to the Criterion transfer. Luckily, both were not prominent and I only recall seeing them twice. Sometimes the striking dresses worn by Maggie Cheung seems to exhibit minor digitization almost creating a 'noise' dissimilar to grain especially in the darker lit scenes. I don't know what it was. The second was some very minor macro-blocking - it was in one scenes in the diner and I had to zoom in extensively to fully identify it. Anyway neither was fatal but I thought I should mention them in case someone else does.

There are moments that it evoked some of the more impressive sequences from Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Colors really do embolden through the jade-green cast and it made for a brilliant viewing of a favorite film.

The audio is still lossless 5.1 surround but more robust than the 2012 Blu-ray edition and Wong Kar Wai says "...we also remixed In the Mood for Love, and Robert Mackenzie did a great job as we collaborated remotely during the pandemic." It has the same beautiful lone-violin of Yumeji's Theme and Nat 'King' Cole's Aquellos Ojos Verdes, Te Quiero Dijiste and Quizas, Quizas, Quizas. It sounds very impressive and Criterion, obviously, add optional English subtitles (see samples below) on their Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray disc.

Nothing new supplement-wise for this particular Blu-ray disc in the set as compared to the 2012 release aside from a music video (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung singing) - NOTE: We've been told this was an Easter Egg on the previous BD - and a restoration trailer. A few, more superfluous, extras are not retained (ex. French trailers and TV Spots etc.) from the Blu-ray edition that is almost 9 years old now. Kept are the 51-minute @ In the Mood for Love documentary about the making of the film, the Hua Yang de Nian Hua short film by Wong Kar-wai ("Hua yang de nian hua is a montage of images created from old nitrate films. All of the wonderful faces and images from the past lead us back to the beautiful memory of a bygone era. This short film is a tribute to all of the memorable people in the Chinese cinema who have faded away in our memory." —Wong Kar Wai, 2000), Tony Rayns on the music of In the Mood for Love, the 2 Interviews with Wong Kar-wai at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival press conference with stars Maggie Cheung Man-yuk & Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Included again are the same four alternate ending and deleted scenes (Room 2046 -8:01, Postcards - 8:23, The Seventies - 8:56, The Last Encounter - 7:49) with optional director’s commentary and this World of Wong Kar Wai has deluxe packaging (see below), including a perfect-bound, French-fold book featuring lavish photography, an essay by critic John Powers, a director’s note, and six collectible art prints.

For most cinephiles its easy to see that Wong Kar Wai is a restless genius never wanting to stagnate. He added to In the Mood For Love endlessly before it even screened at Cannes - re-shooting and editing. This new 4K-restored image is another evolution of his artistry. I urge fans not to quickly dismiss the new appearance simply on the basis of loving the film on Blu-ray in 2012. I was, again, blown-away by it and loved the director's fearless choices.

It the exact same film? While I have seen it a dozen times (I used to play it to introduce friends to foreign film) I can't be sure some sequences weren't switched around - it felt that way and maybe a few new details added or made more subtle - it does run 30-seconds longer but that it probably, as Wong Kar Wai states "We created new credits for a consistent look throughout the films. They are also a reminder to our audience that these are the restored versions.". My memory is not that good - but I can state unequivocally that this 2021 restoration of In the Mood For Love carries the same heart-aching impact, if not more and had me swooning with its incredible emotional power. We will review/compare the entire World of Wong Kar Wai set of films but I was overjoyed with seeing this 4K restoration of "In the Mood For Love". Our highest recommendation!

ADDITION: Criterion - Region 'A' - Blu-ray (September 2012): Advertised as a "New, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Mark Lee Ping-bin" Criterion's 1080P transfer of Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood For Love looks... magnificent. It improves in all the expected areas - but more so than I was anticipating. I kept thinking this was a different rendering than the source used for the 2002 Criterion DVD. It tightens, colors are crisper and the overall image is brighter. There is more information in the frame - often, notably at the bottom. The meticulous period art direction significantly benefits with more vibrant colors. The 'moods' in alleys and shadows are defined so well with the HD contrast levels. This is scrumptious. Not a hint of noise or flaws of any kind. Unless I can compare it to something else one day - it's easy to say this is the best the film has looked outside the cinema. Hypnotic...

The Hong Kong Cantonese and Shanghainese dialect is perfectly realized via the DTS-HD Master surround at 3216 kbps. Atmospheric effects like water dripping, faint whispers and other subtleties are discreetly sent to scattered corners of the room. Benefiting strongly is the original music by Mike Galasso and Shigeru Umebayashi - including "Yumeji's Theme" with penetrating violin sounding deep and impacting. There are optional English subtitles on the region 'A'-locked Blu-ray disc.

We lose some supplements from the Criterion DVD (but gain others). Gone is the interactive essay by film scholar Gina Marchetti on In the Mood for Love, the Photo gallery, the biographies of key cast and crew on the DVD edition and the liner notes portion with the essay by film critic Li Cheuk-to, and director’s statement.

We keep the deleted scenes, with commentary by Wong, the director's very short film Hua yang de nian hua (2000), archival interview with Wong and a “cinema lesson” given by the director at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival press conference from 2000, with Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Tony Leung Chiu-wai and the Trailers and TV spots.

New are two excellent new interviews with critic Tony Rayns, one about the film and the other about the soundtrack, featuring musical cues - lasting over 1/2 an hour in total. The liner notes have a booklet featuring an essay by novelist and film critic Steve Erickson and the Liu Yi-chang story that provided thematic inspiration for the film.

I am extremely pleased with this release. I haven't watched In the Mood For Love in a while - and I know why - it totally drains me. What a masterpiece of cinema - I look forward to watching it again tomorrow... brilliant Blu-ray package from Criterion. Our highest recommendation!

ON THE DVDs: I am a huge fan of Criterion, but I also have a great fondness for this particular film and I suggest that Criterion has not done their usual fine job when we compare it to the TF1/Ocean Region 2 DVD. I have quite a bit to say, so I better get started.

Criterion again have vertically cropped their image (see all captures). I still am totally baffled why they seem to do this on so many releases. It is quite slight, but is now further augmented by horizontally cropping as well in this release. I am beginning to suspect that vertical cropping is standard to their operations and the horizontal cropping is there to put the image back into aspect ratio. Regardless, this is an issue, one I am unhappy to report.

One of the two transfers aspect ratio is slightly off. The TV1 characters look taller and thinner while the Criterion look fatter. This is evident by looking in their faces (capture #6). This is pretty negligible and am willing to give Criterion the benefit of the doubt in this case, but will be able to judge when I add one (or both) of the other two version of this film that I have on DVD... a Seville Pictures version and a Hong Kong version.

Colors: Criterion skin tones look more red, a telltale of contrast boosting (capture #2). Their colors are more vibrant than the TF1 version also leading me to believe that they have been enhanced. I suppose the TF1 could have dampened their colors, but it is far more likely that Criterion have boosted theirs slightly. What happens when this is done is we lose some detail and sure enough the TF1 is sharper (capture#2 and #3 it is most prevalent).

Because the Criterion is brighter, this is further evidence that it has been adjusted. This is not a 'hard and fast rule' that the brighter image is the weaker, but is true in the vast majority of release comparisons. The Extras speak for themselves and I cannot, in good conscience, give the nod to one over the other. They are both spectacular and true devotees of this film will want both version just for the supplements. The sound likewise is excellent on both, but the TF1 offers more options for subtitles and audio. This is probably not important to most DVD buyers who read this, but it again shows the care put into the TF1 release. I think the TF1 is a limited edition and like the "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" Region 2 (France) release will become unavailable through normal e-tailors soon. I say buy the TF1 DVD 2 pack (or single disc which is also available) while you still can. I can't scold my favorite distributor Criterion too much, but I think perhaps haste may have made them err where they usually are leading the pack.

NOTE: In an article in CinemaScope magazine Jonathan Rosenbaum states "I would argue that the two-disc French edition of Wong-kar Wai's "In the Mood For Love" from Océan Films is superior in design to two-disc US version from Criterion, even though Criterion's transfer of the film is better..."

Obviously I disagree about the transfer and hope this particular page proves me correct.

NOTE: Discussed on a Danish forum, one of the members (who actually have lived in HK a years time and have been a reviewer on several Danish publications) who is a big WKW fan have owned both the French, Criterion's and seen the movie in the theatre. He say's that the colors of the French is similar to the experience he had in the theatre, the soundtrack has more or less the same quality and the black levels of the French are perfect.
