(aka "Elvis e Madona" )
directed by Marcelo Laffitte
Brazil 2010
Somewhat of a DIVA hommage by way of Pedro Almadovar, ELVIS & MADONNA (actually ELVIS & MADONA) is the star-crossed love story of a lesbian and a prostitute. Elvis (Simone Spoladore) - actually Elvira - is a photographer about to be thrown out of her apartment when her doctor father (Buza Ferraz) falls on hard times. An aspiring photographer, Elvira takes portfolio jobs by day (nabbing reportage shots along the way) and delivering pizzas on her motorcycle by night. Her very first delivery is to transvestite diva Madona (Igor Cotrim) who has just been beaten and robbed by former porn associate "Tripod Joe" (Sergio Bezerra). Madona dresses hair by day and sings in clubs by night - and fends off offers to return to porn in between - and has a big dream of producing her own show. Elvis and Madona become fast friends, but Elvira begins to have feelings for this "woman who is not a woman who is a woman". While on an amateur modeling assignment, Elvis spies a drug deal in the background and takes some shots, which her editor sells to a paper. The front page story lands Tripod Joe in jail and he vows revenge against Madona and Elvis. |

Comments |
Breaking Glass' dual-layer disc is somewhat of a disappointment. The image is progressive and Portuguese 5.1 and 2.0 stereo downmix options are included; however the English subtitles feature some instances awkward grammar ("homossexual" is always translated as "sissy") and unconverted code for italics bracketing song lyrics and voice-overs (the English subtitles are also larger than the Spanish subtitles [which are mislabeled as Portuguese]).
The "making of" featurette and deleted scenes are of little value to English-speaking viewers since they are unsubtitled and consist mainly of talking heads and dialogue. |
