ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It's one of those weeks were I found positives in everything I reviewed. Richard Linklater's Waking Life gets the Arrow Blu-ray treatment and it's an unforgettable, mind-expanding experience - a stellar package. Prominent mention should obviously be made to BFI's two Ken Russell Blu-ray collections; The Great Composers and The Great Passions represent immense value and both will be admired and appreciated by home theatre aficionados. I was also impressed by Kino's Panic in Year Zero Blu-ray - a huge step beyond the old DVD - and offering a new, excellent, commentary. I love this flawed film directed by Milland himself. Via Vision from Australia have transferred two latter Harryhausen Sinbad films to Blu-ray - both with max'ed out bitrate and 24-bit lossless audio! The Golden Voyage of Sinbad and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger offer great fantasy adventure along with the master's wonderful special effects. So desirable for those that missed Twilight Time's Blu-ray limited editions. I loved The Big Short - great story and performances - one of the few modern films I will revisit often. John Frankenheimer's The Holcroft Covenant goes Blu-ray and although it's far from his best work - I did see sparks of greatness while viewing in 1080P. Only die-hard fans of the 'so-bad-it's-good' genre (like myself) need indulge in Journey to the Seventh Planet - the commentary is a huge attribute to the Blu-ray package. I covered two DVDs this week - Lucio Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling - one of the best, and less-typical, of the Giallo genre and a must-have at the extremely low price. Arrow bring us a new horror-thriller in The Pack - wild dogs and an isolated farmhouse...

Noir Quote for the week: “I'm not a film star, I am an actress. Being a film star is such a false life, lived for fake values and for publicity. ." - Vivien Leigh

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger BD - Sinbad (Patrick Wayne), daring sailor and Prince of Baghdad, sets sail towards Charnak, seeking permission from Prince Kassim to wed his sister, Farah (Jane Seymour). But Sinbad discovers that Kassim has been placed under a spell by their fiendish stepmother, Zenobia (Margaret Whiting). To break the wicked spell, Sinbad must set forth on a journey unlike any ever travelled. Awaiting him on this perilous voyage is an assortment of beasts beyond one's wildest imagination. Among the creatures encountered are the Minotaur, a bronze colossus, a giant troglodyte, a sabre-toothed tiger, and an "almost human" baboon. The incredible, animated special effects by Ray Harryhausen will keep you spellbound as you sail with this Sinbad classic. Blu-ray Release date: January, 2015

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad BD - This is a spectacular adventure set in mysterious ancient lands inhabited by incredible creatures! Sinbad (John Phillip Law), Prince of Baghdad and legendary sailor, finds an intriguing map and sets sail for the previously uncharted island of Lemuria with a beautiful slave girl, Margiana (Caroline Munro), and the Grand Vizier of the land of Marabia. Prince Koura (Tom Baker), an evil wizard who is trying to gain control of malevolent spirits, follows in an effort to thwart Sinbad's quest. Sinbad reaches Lemuria in spite of an enchantment Koura casts upon the giant figurehead of Sinbad's ship which brings it to life. On Lemuria, Sinbad and his stalwart crew encounter a six-armed, sword-brandishing statue, a one-eyed centaur and a griffin. Finally, Sinbad confronts Koura in a face-to-face duel to the death! Blu-ray Release date: January, 2015

The Ken Russell Collection: The Great Composers BD - The first of the three films, Elgar (1962), portrays in vigorous style the life of the English composer Sir Edward Elgar, with Huw Wheldon narrating his life story over beautiful mountain scenery. The Debussy Film (1965), Russell's penultimate film for Monitor was an ambitious work about the composer's life, written by Melvyn Bragg and starring Oliver Reed as Claude Debussy. Song of Summer (1968) is generally regarded (not least by its director) as Russell's best television film with many critics citing it as his finest work in any medium. The story traces Eric Fenby and is based on his memoirs of trying to help the blind and paralysed composer Frederick Delius. Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2016

The Ken Russell Collection: The Great Passions BD - The collection opens with Always on Sunday (1965) a dramatized examination of the painter Henri Rousseau. The combination of Russell reuniting with Melvyn Bragg and Oliver Reed and Russell's infectious love of the film's subject results in a film which is illuminating in every frame. Isadora: The Biggest Dancer in the World (1966), a study of the outrageous American dancer, Isadora Duncan, starring Vivian Pickles as the dancer whose obsession with the importance of art and complete disdain for decorum chimes perfectly with Russell's own sensibility. Last of the TV dramas is Dante's Inferno (1967) which tells of the complex relationship between the 19th century artist and poet, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and his model Elizabeth Siddal. Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2016

Journey to the Seventh Planet BD - Travelling by spaceship to the planet Uranus in year 2010, a group of astronauts are confronted with a mysterious being who resembles a brain but is "thousands of times more powerful," a bevy of pretty girls whom they may or may not have loved in a previous life, and, of course, the inevitable monster, a gargantuan rat. Made by the same people who gave the world Reptilicus (1961), screenwriter Ib Melchior and American scholck-producer Sidney Pink, this endearingly silly sci-fi movie was filmed in Denmark with a largely Danish cast. Hollywood actor John Agar and Greta Thyssen -- a former Miss Denmark who had doubled for Marilyn Monroe and appeared opposite The Three Stooges -- added a bit of box-office value to the otherwise mundane proceedings. Apparently filmed in English, the Danish actors speak their lines with utmost care and deliberation, presumably to make it easier for dubbing purposes. Carl Ottosen, who was hilariously inept in Reptilicus, hams it up with abandonment this time around as well. Rushing onto the cardboard set with dire news to report, Ottosen stops dead in his tracks, takes a deep breath, and delivers his dialogue ve-ry slow-ly and with much care. Blu-ray Release date: April 5th, 2016

The Holcroft Covenant BD - Director John Frankenheimer and writers Edward Anhalt and George Axelrod try to inject some life into this adaptation of Robert Ludlum's best-selling espionage novel. Michael Caine stars as Noel Holcroft, who was adopted in Germany by an American family in the waning days of World War II. Now middle-aged, Noel learns that his biological father, who had been one of Hitler's key economic advisors, left him more than $4 billion at his death. Noel is supposed to dispense the money to specific individuals who had suffered under the oppression of Hitler. But Noel comes to realize the money is, in fact, being used by fascists starting a new Nazi regime. When the neo-Nazis find out Noel is wise to their plans, they chase him through Europe, trying to assassinate him and make way for a Fourth Reich. Blu-ray Release date: April 19th, 2016

Panic in Year Zero BD - Ray Milland both starred in and directed the morose, minimalist sci-fier Panic in the Year Zero! (original title: Panic in Year Zero!). En route from Los Angeles to a vacation in the mountains, Harry Baldwin (Milland), his wife, Ann (Jean Hagen), and his teen-aged children, Rick (Frankie Avalon) and Karen (Mary Mitchell), are appalled to see a mushroom cloud forming over the L.A. skyline. With the highways clogged by panicking motorists, Milland and his family decide to head to the shelter of their fishing spot, there to wait until more news about the nuclear disaster is available. The most powerful aspect of the film is the "normalcy" of Milland's family: we are made to feel throughout that what happens to them could very well happen to us, and how then would we react. Blu-ray Release Date: April 19th, 2016

The Big Short BD - This adaptation of Michael Lewis' nonfiction book The Big Short explores the 2008 financial crisis through the lens of four unorthodox moneymen, who foresaw the consequences of the fraudulent mortgage-lending practices of large banks on Wall Street. Christian Bale plays Michael Burry, a former hedge-fund manager who was one of the first to forecast the collapse of the credit bubble due to excessive subprime lending. Steve Carell is Mark Baum (based on the real-life Steve Eisman), a money manager who rose to fame after successfully betting against subprime mortgages. Directed by Adam McKay. Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, and Marisa Tomei co-star. Blu-ray Release date: March 15th, 2016

Waking Life BD - It would be easy to dismiss as 'Slackers - Part Deux', but for the inspired conceit of shooting the film twice: once as a conventional DV feature, which then became the template for computer animator Bob Sabiston. Sabiston's woozy, pulsing dream imagery is something else. Wiley gradually realises that (a) he's in the middle of the weirdest dream of his life, and (b) he can't wake up. This is one movie where nodding off would seem an appropriate response. The endless philosophising is a bit sophomoric and more jokes would help, but this is one of a kind that grows more absorbing the longer it runs. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2016

The Pack - Man's best friend turns against him when a horde of bloodthirsty wild dogs descends upon a family's farmhouse. In a remote stretch of the Australian Outback, a sheep rancher, his veterinarian wife, and their two teenage children live in bucolic isolation—until a horrifying night when a pack of fang-bearing, four-legged rabid beasts besiege their home. With no one around to help them, the family must band together to survive—or else become canine kibble. Generating a steadily mounting sense of dread, The Pack cleverly toys with genre conventions before it goes in for the kill. DVD Release Date: March 7th, 2016

Don't Torture a Duckling - The oddly titled Don't Torture a Duckling (taken from a minor plot point) is one of director Lucio Fulci's most linear and conventional narratives, relying more on story and mystery than on gore and atmospherics. In a rural Italian village, young boys turn up dead, and the authorities are stumped as to who the murderer is. A reporter lends his efforts to the hunt for the killer, many red herrings turn up, and more kids are murdered while the police search for the culprit. A sexually liberated young woman from Milan, a local witch, and the village idiot all fall under suspicion until the killer is uncovered. Gone is much of the director's trademark visual style, replaced with the blinding sunlight of an Italian summer for a hyperrealistic feel (though Fulci's affinity for the zoom shot and deep focus comes through). More tellingly, though, Fulci points toward the superstition and ignorance of the villagers as being as dangerous and destructive as the murderer himself. Also, the film's vehemently anti-Catholic sentiment had to have been controversial at the time of its release. Fans of the giallo and Italian horror in general would do well to seek out this film for an example of Lucio Fulci at his most grim and serious. DVD Release Date: February 27th, 2007
