(aka "Dope" or "Half Past Hell" or "The Most Wanted Woman" or "Interpol")

Directed by John Gilling
UK / USA 1957

Stylishly directed by genre film journeyman John Gilling (Plague of the Zombies), Pickup Alley is a long-unseen crime film gem, set amongst the seedy milieu of the international narcotics trade.

Spurred on by the murder of his drug-addicted sister by ruthless crime boss Frank McNally (Trevor Howard, Brief Encounter), US agent Charles Sturgis (Victor Mature, Cry of the City) launches a transnational woman-hunt for McNally s shapely associate, Gina Broger (Anita Ekberg, Killer Nun, La dolce vita). His investigation takes him on a thrill-ride from New York to London, Lisbon, Rome, Naples and finally Athens...

A globe-trotting adventure boasting a top-tier international cast, Pickup Alley affords the viewer shockingly frank portrayals of drug addiction; a glamorous travelogue of exotic locations, and intriguing depictions of sleazy villains. Produced by Irving Allen and Cubby Broccoli s Warwick Films.

***

Victor Mature stars in this European-based crime thriller. Mature is an FBI agent on the trail of a drug smuggling operation, following his quarry all over the Continent (with accompanying pretty pictures of Portugal, Spain, France etc.) The criminal mastermind (Trevor Howard) is something of a lunatic, who has already strangled Mature's sister to death just for the hell of it. Anita Ekberg plays Howard's luscious courier; as usual, her "acting" consists to breathing heavily in a low-cut dress. The title Pickup Alley was the invention of Columbia's New York office: The film's original British title was Interpol.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kit Parker Films Blu-ray (September 2019): Kit Parker Films in association with Millcreek Entertainment have released the last (of three) of these 3 Blu-ray / 9 Film Noir features Boxsets. Volume Three has:

The Crimson Kimono (1959), The Lineup (1958), Man on a String (1960), The Shadow in the Window (1956), The Long Haul (1957), Pickup Alley (1957), The Case Against Brooklyn (1958),The Tijuana Story (1957) and She Played with Fire (1957)

Volume One was described as "Stalwart noir directors and casts highlight these hard to find features Address Unknown (1944) dir/William Cameron Menzies, cast/Paul Lukas, Carl Esmond, Peter Van Eyck; Escape in the Fog (1945) dir/Oscar (Budd) Boetticher cast/Otto Kruger, Nina Foch, William Wright; The Guilt of Janet Ames (1947) dir/Henry Levin cast/Rosalind Russell, Melvyn Douglas, Sid Caesar; The Black Book (aka The Reign of Terror) (1949) dir/Anthony Mann cast/Robert Cummings, Richard Basehart, Arlene Dahl; Johnny Allegro (1949) dir/Ted Tetzlaff cast/George Raft, Nina Foch, George Macready; 711 Ocean Drive (1950) dir/Joseph M. Newman cast/Edmond O'Brien, Joanne Dru, Otto Kruger; The Killer That Stalked New York (1950) dir/Earl McEvoy cast/Evelyn Keyes, Charles Korvin, William Bishop; Assignment Paris (1952) dir/Earl McEvoy cast/Dana Andrews, Marta Toren, George Sanders; The Miami Story (1954) dir/Fred F. Sears cast/Barry Sullivan, Luther Adler, John Baer - all in high definition presented in their original aspect ratios."

Volume Two has:

Bait (1954), The Crooked Web (1955), The Night Holds Terror (1955), Footsteps in the Fog (1955), Cell 2455, Death Row (1955), 5 Against the House (1955), New Orleans Uncensored (1955), Spin a Dark Web (1955), and Rumble on the Docks (1956)

So again, 3 films on a dual-layered Blu-ray, with a supportive bitrate in 1080P and this is in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Pickup Alley is dark and we look forward to comparing it to the UK Arrow edition, as there was some minor macro-blocking in one of the opening scene. It was prevalent throughout but I would like to compare the entire disc, especially that one scene. It may also exhibit 'Cinemascope mumps' with horizontal stretching (fatter faces.)

The audio is 24-bit lossless (DTS-HD Master 1.0 channel mono) is weak with a screechy higher end - most noticeable in the beginning 1/4 of the film. It exports the atmospheric score by Richard Rodney Bennett (The Brink's Job, Figures in a Landscape, Far From the Madding Crowd, The Witches, Equus, Billy Liar, The Man Who Could Cheat Death) and effects share some minor depth in the lossless. I also hope Arrow can improve upon this audio weakness. The Blu-ray offers optional English subtitles (see sample) on this Region FREE Blu-ray package.

No supplements - but the disc is shared with The Shadow in the Window and The Long Haul. Pickup Alley is less a Noir than a international flavored crime-drama. Not top-shelf but it has the cache of Vic Mature, baddie Trevor Howard and and statuesque Ekberg. The negative on these Noir Archive sets are the lack of extras but the value with these packages is the number of, usually modest but enticing, 50's crime dramas (many with Noir cycle approximation). I'm enjoying these a lot.
