Directed by Robert Parrish, Phil Karlson (uncredited)
USA 1952
New York Herald Tribune reporter Jimmy Race (Dana Andrews, The Best Years of Our Lives, Laura) is sent to Budapest by his editor, Nick Strang (George Sanders, All About Eve, Rebecca), to help colleague Jeanne Moray (Marta Toren, The Man Who Watched Trains Go By, Sirocco) investigate a rumored plot to overthrow Hungary's Communist dictatorship. After coming into possession of some microfilm that threatens to incriminate backers of the plot inside the government, Jimmy is arrested and jailed. Tortured, Jimmy is forced into confessing to being a spy, and Jeanne and Strang must put their faith in a man wanted by the Communist authorities in order to help gain his freedom. This tense political suspense was directed by Robert Parrish (Fire Down Below, Duffy) from a screenplay by noted film noir scripter William Bowers (Cry Danger, Pitfall), and co-stars Audrey Totter (Lady in the Lake, Women's Prison). *** Assignment - Paris is based on a serialized Saturday Evening Post yarn by Paul and Pauline Gallico. The film stars Dana Andrews as reporter Jimmy Race, assigned to the Paris bureau of the New York Herald Tribune. Race makes the acquaintance of French journalist Jeanne Moray (Marta Toren), who is forced to suppress a white-hot news story about an impending Iron Curtain political conspiracy because she lacks proof. At great risk to himself, Race heads to Budapest to ferret out the facts, sometimes right under the noses of the communist "damage control" experts. George Sanders co-stars as editor Rick Strang, who dispatches Race on his fact-finding mission--partly because of his dedication to truth, and partly because he has designs on the gorgeous Jeanne himself. One of the more palatable anti-Red tracts of its era, Assignment - Paris makes excellent use of authentic Parisian and Hungarian locations. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
So, 3 films on a dual-layered
Blu-ray, with
a decent bitrate in 1080P and the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. This has a
few speckles but generally looks thick. There are a few inconsistencies but
they weren't egregious. Contrast is decently layered and there is fine grain
exported by the HD rendering.
The audio is 24-bit lossless (DTS-HD Master) exporting the score by
George Duning (The
Guilt of Janet Ames, The
Man From Laramie,
3:10
to Yuma,
Jeanne
Eagels,
The Shadow on the Window,
Tight Spot, etc.).
It sounds clean with minor depth. The
Blu-ray offers
optional English subtitles on this Region FREE
Blu-ray
package.
No supplements - but the disc has
The Miami Story and
711 Ocean Drive.
Assignment - Paris skirts the boundaries of
Noir as a cold-war hybrid but it's a decent thriller with dark
cinema stalwarts Dana Andrews and
Audrey Totter. I was glad to have this as part of the collection as
I had only seen in once - in a poor video presentation many years ago. Recommended! |
