Description: Legendary Swedish sex bomb Anita Ekberg (LA DOLCE VITA) stars as Sister Gertrude, a cruel nun who discovers depraved pleasure in a frenzy of drug addiction, sexual degradation and sadistic murder. Joe Dallesandro (FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN), Lou Castel (A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL), Alida Valli (SUSPIRIA) and the luscious Paola Morra (BEHIND CONVENT WALLS) co-star in this notorious 'Nunsploitation' based on actual events that took place in a Central European country not many years ago! Branded as obscene around the world and banned outright in Britain, KILLER NUN has been newly remastered from the original negative and fully restored in sleazy High Definition!

The Film:

A dated blend of softcore sleaze, routine blood-letting and explicable coyness, this stars an over-the-hill Ekberg as a nun who has given up la dolce vita for a life behind convent hospital walls. A secret junkie whose past sexual traumas and drug-induced hallucinations transform her from a caring angel into an avenging one, Ekberg loses her patience and starts killing patients. Given this excessive scenario, why the quaint evasions? Lesbianism is hinted at but not shown, scenes of Ekberg shooting up are filmed with her back to the camera. Isolated scenes spill over into camp humour, as when the hysterical Ekberg repeatedly stamps on an old lady's dentures. A censored version, running 81 minutes, removed two 'nasties' (the needle in the eye/scalpel to the skull sequences).

Anita Ekberg and Joe Dallesandro star in this cult horror film about a demented nun sliding through morphine addiction into madness, whilst presiding over a regime of lesbianism, torture and death. Anita plays the head nurse/nun in a general hospital, whose increasingly psychotic behavior endangers the staff and patients around her.

Killer Nun looks like another competent Blu-ray transfer from Blue Underground.  The image quality shows minor, but consistent, grain. It probably looked quite similar to this theatrically almost 35 years ago.  This is only single-layered but the 1.5-hour film is supported with a decent bitrate. Contrast is strong and the thickness of the detail is probably inherent in the film. Marginal noise creeps into some darkness. Close-ups can impress in this area. Generally this Blu-ray seems like strong digital representation that shows a few scenes of desirable depth. I have no strong complaints.

Audio :

Equivalent tracks via DTS-HD Master stereo in both English or Italian are available. There is some perceived depth and the audio is clean and discernable despite some, usual, DUB sync issues. The track is positively rendered and does its job well with a few punchy surprises in the mix. There are optional subtitles - both English (SDH) and English - for the Italian version - as well as French and Spanish. My Momitsu has identified it as being a region FREE disc playable on Blu-ray machines worldwide.

Extras :

Blue Underground includes some supplements. We get a 14-minute interview with writer/director Giulio Berruti subversively entitled From the Secret Files of the Vatican. It is in Italian with English subtitles and has some interest in the evolution of the Killer Nun. There is also a theatrical trailer (2:56) and a Poster and Stills Gallery.

BOTTOM LINE:
There were some positives here. Ekberg was quite good although seemed to struggle with advancing the role. As a corollary for a descent into madness - this is pretty ham-fisted. The murderous nun aspect has some appeal and Giulio Berruti built some menacing suspense. I would think that those keen on the genre will eat this up. It's hard not to get into Killer Nun to varying degrees.  Blue Underground continue to release strong Blu-ray products. This could be involved in a solid 'Horror-Night' double feature presentation in your Home Theater.

About the Reviewer: Hello, fellow Beavers! I have been interested in film since I viewed a Chaplin festival on PBS when I was around 9 years old. I credit DVD with expanding my horizons to fill an almost ravenous desire to seek out new film experiences. I currently own approximately 9500 DVDs and have reviewed over 5000 myself. I appreciate my discussion Listserv for furthering my film education and inspiring me to continue running DVDBeaver. Plus a healthy thanks to those who donate and use our Amazon links.

Although I never wanted to become one of those guys who focused 'too much' on image and sound quality - I find HD is swiftly pushing me in that direction.
