directed by Arthur Lubin
UK 1955

Stewart Granger is the recently widowed Londoner Stephen Lowry in this lovely little Victorian Noir. His housemaid Lily (played by Jean Simmons) confronts Lowry with the knowledge that the former Mrs. Lowry was poisoned, securing herself a better position among the household staff, and eventually, in Lowry's arms. Eventually, the threat of blackmail is too much for Lowry, and both he and Lily struggle to gain the control of the situation - with fatal results.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: (July 2018) Indicator - Region FREE - Blu-ray: The new Indicator 1080P transfer is dual-layered with a max'ed out bitrate in and around the 1.75:1 aspect ratio. Against the DVD it loses a sliver of information on the left edge but gains on both top and bottom. Skin tons warm, grain textures are more apparent and contrast improves to produce a significantly more film-like image.

The audio is in a linear PCM mono track in the original English language. It is predictably flat with few challenging effects in the film. The score is by Benjamin Frankel (notable for composing the music for the British version of Night and the City, plus some Noirish titles like Libel and The Man Who Watched Trains Go By as well as The Iron Petticoat and The Importance of Being Earnest). Indicator's Region FREE Blu-ray offers optional English (SDH) subtitles.

Indicator add plenty of supplements starting with another Guardian Series interview - this one with a charming and humorous Stewart Granger from September 1990 who shares stories about Hollywood, this production, Jean Simmons while the film is running for 1 hour and 8-minutes. Josephine Botting on 'Footsteps in the Fog' is new and runs 27-minutes. It is an exploration of Hollywood’s fascination with Victorian England by the film expert and BFI curator. We also get 27-minutes of Steve Chibnall on Belinda Lee - a new appreciation of the tragic star by the film expert and author of British Horror Cinema and our own Kat Ellinger on 'Footsteps in the Fog' where Diabolique magazine’s editor-in-chief explores the film's Gothic origins for 17-minutes. There is an original theatrical trailer and image gallery of on-set and promotional photography plus the package contains a limited Edition exclusive booklet containing a newly commissioned essay by professor Steve Chibnall, archival interviews, historic articles, an overview of contemporary critical responses and full film credits. It is limited to 3,000 copies.

Footsteps in the Fog is a subtle, deliciously building thriller with Jean Simmons giving her usual excellent performance. Great film for fans of the British style Noirs. This is becoming a habit but Indicator continue to impress with their competence and excellent choice of films to bring to Blu-ray. Another fabulous package from them - strongly recommended!

***

ON THE DVD (2010):  Footsteps in the Fog was one of the first 100 titles released by Sony Pictures through their new made-on-demand service "Screen Classics by Request" back in September. The British Gothic noir-drama is presented in a progressive anamorphically enhanced transfer on this single-layered disc. The colors are attractive, although one memorable scene in a fog (capture 4) suffers from the low bitrate. English mono soundtrack is fine, although like any other MOD discs, it's not subtitled or closed-captioned.

There is an original theatrical trailer provided for your enjoyment. There is also a region 2 release of this film from Sony Pictures in UK (HERE) which is currently very cheap at Amazon.co.uk, but we don't own it to compare the two versions.
