ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now gets both a 'new cut' and a 4K UHD transfer. The 6-disc package gets our highest endorsement - endless hours of contemplative film enjoyment at a level rarely seen in the medium. Fans are thrilled with Wicked Vision's Blu-ray transfer of Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack's pre-Code adventure-thriller The Most Dangerous Game. It looks remarkably superior to the last 1080P transfer. Aldo Lado's Giallo Who Saw Her Die? gets a stellar Blu-ray transfer from Arrow Films. A thriller strongly reminiscent of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now. William Wyler's Jezebel - another vintage masterpiece with Bette Davis. Warner Archive have transferred it to Blu-ray. Despite the limited new extras - this is still a must-own. Billy Wilder's The Major and the Minor gets an Arrow Blu-ray transfer - a deceptively charming romance conflicting identity and deception. I have always liked Peter Collinson's Fright with Susan George - a shocking, exploitive Brit horror that looks amazingly improved on Blu-ray. Yorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth gets a Kino Blu-ray edition of his ingeniously frightening dark comedy. Brilliant. Hammer Studio's Straight On Till Morning has a title taken from J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan - "Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning” but is an uncomfortable thriller/horror with an exceptional performance from Rita Tushingham, who also provides a commentary on the Shout! Factory Blu-ray. 1942's The Spoilers is a western-Klondike-adventure with Marlene Dietrich, John Wayne and Randolph Scott - available on Blu-ray, with commentary from Kino. Henry Hathaway's The Desert Fox is an exceptional biographic war-drama about Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (played by James Mason). Nice that it made it to Blu-ray. Support Your Local Gunfighter is a great time to enjoy the western genre in a lighter vein, making for an entertaining Blu-ray double-bill with its predecessor Support Your Local Sheriff.

“Anyone who's made film and knows about the cinema has a lifelong love affair with the experience. You never stop learning about film.” ― Francis Ford Coppola

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Apocalypse Now 4K UHD - A never-before-seen and newly restored cut of Francis Ford Coppola's spectacular cinematic masterpiece. Apocalypse Now Final Cut is Coppola's most complete version of his multi-awarded classic. In Vietnam in 1970, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness... 4K UHD Release Date: August 27th, 2019

The Major and the Minor BD - Wilder's first film as director begins brilliantly with Rogers as a New York career woman disillusioned to find her house calls offering scalp massage constantly subject to male misinterpretation - in particular from a lecherous Benchley pursuing 'a little drinkypoo, biteypoo, rhumbapoo' - who masquerades as a pigtailed l2-year-old innocent in order to avoid paying full adult fare on the train home to Iowa. Very funny stuff as she meets Milland's protective major, and finds ambiguous refuge in his sleeping compartment, although it later proves to be a one-joke situation as she is forced to accompany him to the military academy where he instructs, and becomes mascot to a horde of hopefully lecherous cadets. Pretty irresistible, nevertheless, with Rogers doing a beautiful job of dovetailing sexual provocation and demure innocence. Blu-ray Release Date: September 23rd, 2019

Who Saw Her Die? BD - Sculptor Franco Serpieri (Lazenby) welcomes Roberta (Nicoletta Elmi, Deep Red) – his young daughter from a failed marriage – to Venice, unaware that a disturbed child-killer is stalking the city’s canals. When Roberta’s body is found floating face-down in the river, the lives of Franco and his estranged wife Elizabeth (Anita Strindberg, The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail) are ripped asunder. Desperate for vengeance, Franco turns detective in a bid to track down his daughter’s killer, and in the process unearths shocking evidence of depravity and corruption which implicates some of the most respected figures in Venetian society. Released at the height of the giallo boom, this gripping mystery thriller boasts some of the most iconic names associated with the genre on both sides of the camera. Blu-ray Release Date: September 17th, 2019

Jezebel BD - New Orleans, 1852, the Lympus Ball. Enter Julie Marston (Davis) dressed in scarlet. Deep shock from the maidens in white and the matrons in grey. She starts to waltz and couples shrink from the contaminating touch of her red gown. This justly famous scene from Jezebel (filmed, incidentally, in black-and-white) telescopes many of the film's themes. Julie is socially and sexually transgressive. Indeed her defiance of conventions threatens the very Social Order, and she is soon associated with the fever and fires that devastate the town. Preston Dillard (Fonda), engaged to Julie but already insecure in his masculinity, cannot cope with her dangerous sexuality and finds refuge with a safe woman from the North. Blu-ray Release Date: August 27th, 2019

The Desert Fox BD - Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (James Mason) leads the German troops against the Allied forces in World War II. Rommel's virtuosity on the battlefield makes him a national hero and earns the begrudging respect of his foes, but his tactics also infuriate Adolf Hitler. Rommel's close friend Dr. Karl Strolin(Cedric Hardwicke) asks him to take part in a plan to assassinate the Furhrer; when Hitler learns of Rommel's involvement in the scheme, the field marshal is given a chilling ultimatum. Blu-ray Release Date: September 28th, 2018

The Most Dangerous Game BD - The Most Dangerous Game is a superb, pre-Code action-adventure film. Based upon a famous short story by Richard Connell, it follows big game hunter, Bob Rainsford, (Joel McCrea), as he becomes quarry for another, the opulently deranged Count Zaroff, (floridly played by Leslie Banks). Utilizing some of the amazing sets made for King Kong, the film is sometimes thought of as a place-holder to keep key cast and crew available during Kong's lengthy animation schedule. This included actors Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Noble Johnson and Steve Clemento, as well as editor Archie Marshek, composer Max Steiner, sound effects expert Murray Spivak, illustrators Mario Larrinaga and Byron Crabbe, and optical effects wizards Vernon Walker and Linwood Dunn. Wicked Vision Blu-ray Release Date: July 15th, 2019

Straight On Till Morning BD - British thriller directed by Peter Collinson. Brenda (Rita Tushingham) is a lonely young woman who occupies her time writing children's stories. Feeling that her native Liverpool is holding her back, she moves to London and tries to join the scene there. After finding work at a trendy boutique, Brenda spots handsome stranger Peter (Shane Briant) and kidnaps his dog as an excuse to go and meet him. The pair get on well and Brenda moves in, but it's not long before she finds herself in danger as a number of Peter's dark secrets are revealed. Shout! Factory Blu-ray Release date: September 17th, 2019

Fright BD - Teenage babysitter Amanda (Susan George, Straw Dogs) arrives at the Lloyd home to watch their young son for the evening. But it seems that the strangely nervous Mrs. Lloyd is hiding a shocking secret ... a secret that has just escaped from a nearby insane asylum and is now desperately trying to get inside the house. What must Amanda endure to survive the ultimate night of Fright? Blu-ray Release Date: September 17th, 2019

Dogtooth BD - Dogtooth (Cynodontians) is acclaimed director Yoro's Lanthimos’ breakout success, an ingeniously frightening dark comedy that was an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Film, and which won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. In an effort to protect their three children from the corrupting influence of the outside world, a Greek couple transforms their home into a gated compound of cultural deprivation and bizarre ritual. But children cannot remain innocent forever. When the father brings home a young woman to satisfy his son’s sexual urges, the family’s engineered reality begins to crumble, with devastating consequences. Dogtooth punctuates its compelling drama with moments of shocking violence, creating a biting social satire that is as profound as it is provocative. Blu-ray Release Date: September 3rd, 2019

Support Your Local Gunfighter BD - This Western action/comedy is told in the same tongue-in-cheek manner as its predecessor, Support Your Local Sheriff. Goldie (Marie Windsor), a madam, is a formidable woman, and Latigo Smith (James Garner) knows perfectly well that his disreputable ways will be trimmed considerably should she succeed in marrying him. Instead, he escapes from her and winds up in the town of Purgatory. The town's inhabitants have been expecting the arrival of Swifty Morgan (Chuck Connors), the famous gunfighter. All things being equal, Latigo is happy to be mistaken for Morgan's sidekick, while Jug May (Jack Elam) impersonates Morgan himself. Blu-ray Release Date: September 17th, 2019

The Spoilers BD - Gold and Greed in an Alaskan Boomtown! Screen legends John Wayne (Reap the Wild Wind), Marlene Dietrich (Witness for the Prosecution) and Randolph Scott (Western Union) shine in this action-packed adventure set against the backdrop of the turn-of-the-century Nome Gold Rush. When honest prospector Roy Lannister (Wayne) gets swindled out of his mine claim, he turns to seductive saloon singer Cherry Maloti (Dietrich) for assistance in his battle with no-good town kingpin Alexander McNamara (Scott). It’s an adventure as wild as the Northwest Territory itself, featuring an all-out fight to the finish between western icons Wayne and Scott that’s considered one of the most spectacular action sequences ever filmed.
