We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions, and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both 4K UHD and Blu-ray (see HERE).

(aka "Holocaust: The Story of the Family Weiss")

Directed by Marvin J. Chomsky
USA 1978

The now-legendary miniseries Holocaust first aired as a presentation in NBC's Big Event series. Written by Gerald Green, the story begins in the Germany of 1935. We are introduced to the family of Jewish doctor Joseph Weiss (Fritz Weaver) his wife Berta (Rosemary Harris), his brother Moses (Sam Wanamaker), his sons Rudi (Joseph Bottoms) and Karl (James Woods), and his daughter Anna (Blanche Baker). We also meet struggling lawyer Erik Dorf (Michael Moriarity), who is urged by his ambitious wife to join the SS. As the Nazis' persecution of the Jews is stepped up, most of the Weiss family is deported to the Polish ghetto--then to Auschwitz, which is overseen by Erik Dorf. Rudi and his Jewish girlfriend Helena (Tovah Feldsuh) witness the 1941 Baba Yar massacre, then join the Russian partisans in their battle against the Nazis. Also appearing in Holocaust is Meryl Streep as Karl Weiss' Christian wife Inga. The winner of eight Emmy awards, Holocaust was originally telecast in four parts on April 16, 17, 18, and 19, 1978.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Universal Blu-ray (September 2019): Universal have transferred the 7.5 hour,4-part mini-series Holocaust, from 1978, to two dual-layered Blu-ray discs. This was supposedly shot in 1.33:1 but this image framing is 1.78:1. The bitrate is modest and the image has a softness but looks pleasing in-motion. Detail, in the many close-ups, is visible. There is no noise or digital compression artifacts.  The archival black and white footage looks respectable. Some colors (reds) have richness but most are passive, there is occasional depth and overall, was highly watchable and consistent without damage or distractions although there was minor scratches in the very beginning of part one. I see some grain textures in the background.

On their Blu-ray, Universal use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original English language (with an instance of Burmese). There is gunfire that carries weight and a subtle but impacting score by Morton Gould (Cinerama Holiday). Universal offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Universal Blu-ray has no supplements. The 7 1/2 hours of feature seems more than adequate for content value. This is a program you will watch over multiple viewings.

Overwhelming. Holocaust follows each member of the Weiss family after, Karl, one of the son's marriage ceremony to Inga. It even follows a storyline of some of the Nazi officers. We see how Fascist laws creep into society and the suffering is driven by a steamroller of hate that cascades out of control. There are many deaths and the performances are excellent from the stellar cast including Rosemary Harris, Michael Moriarty, Sam Wanamaker, David Warner, Fritz Weaver, James Woods, Meryl Streep, Marius Goring and many more. It's a series that is draining but so gripping and realistic. It works almost on a docu-drama level. This Blu-ray. should have a wide audience. Strongly recommended.
