We have started a Patreon page with the hopes that some of our followers would be willing to donate a small amount to keep DVDBeaver alive. We are a tiny niche, so your generosity is vital to our existence.

We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions, and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both 4K UHD and Blu-ray (see HERE).

To those that are unfamiliar, Patreon is a secure/verified third-party service where users can agree to a monthly donation via credit card or PayPal by clicking the button below.

(aka "In the Aftermath" or "In the Aftermath: Angels Never Sleep")

Directed by Carl Colpaert
Japan / Australia 1988

Following in the footsteps of Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich, Roger Corman protégé Carl Colpaert (The Crew) made his directorial debut by combining repurposed excerpts from a foreign film in this case, Mamoru Oshii's (Ghost In The Shell) spellbinding 1985 anime Angel's Egg with new live action footage shot in America. The result is In The Aftermath, a haunting post-apocalyptic vision like no other.

In a radiation-soaked wasteland, two surviving soldiers, Frank and Goose, search for essential supplies amid the rubble. After a violent confrontation, Frank is haunted by visions of an angelic young girl holding a giant egg, herself a refugee from another world altogether. Could the egg be the key to saving both their worlds?

A unique mash-up of 1980s B-movie nuclear paranoia and hauntingly lyrical animation, In The Aftermath is presented in a stunning new restoration that highlights Oshii s visionary genius and Colpaert's low-budget ingenuity.

***

Almost fitting into the bracket of 'art movie', In the Aftermath depicts a devastated planet, presumably the result of Nuclear war although the cause is never made clear, where the air is too polluted to breath and human survivors are scarce. A young angel girl named Angel watches the world below, taking particular interest in Frank, a soldier roaming the wastelands in search of safe supplies. Angel has been tasked, by her brother Jonathan with finding someone worthy of receiving her egg which contains mysterious powers not even she understands.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow Blu-ray (August 2019): Arrow have transferred the unusual apocalypse film, with a mixture of live-action and animation, In the Aftermath to Blu-ray. This was a low-budget production and has a gritty quality to the live-action although the animation looks quite good. This may have been an intentional 'look' to reinforce the barren contaminated outdoors - always smoky and unkempt. There is grain and, although IMDb says 35mm - sequences could have been shot in 16mm. It is advertised as "Brand new 2K restoration from original film elements, exclusively restored by Arrow Films".

On their Blu-ray, Arrow use a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. There is a score by Anthony Moore, and some may notice Horacio Moscovici's Carnavalito Tango. I would say that the audio is unremarkable. Arrow offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Arrow Blu-ray has included a few new extras. The Path To Aftermath is a newly filmed 11-minute interview with producer Tom Dugan who has a good time describing his entry into the business and comments regarding In The Aftermath. Apocalypse Then is a newly filmed 10-minute, likeable, interview with star Tony Markes who is frank about his career and roles in The Hanoi Hilton and Valley Girl plus working as a producer. Before The Aftermath: The Influence of Angel's Egg, is a new 20-minute appreciation of Mamoru Oshii's original film by anime expert Andrew Osmond (author of Arrow's book Ghost In The Shell) . He shares a lot. There is a stills and poster gallery and the package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Corey Brickley. For first pressing purchasers there is an illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Jon Towlson.

I'm a big fan of Apocalypse films - and In The Aftermath is a.... refreshing addition to that genre. It is probably accurate to say the film is 'misunderstood'. The included interviews on the Blu-ray help me gain some minor appreciation but overall, I would say that only the very generously-minded film fan should indulge. I think I may like it more upon subsequent viewings.  Arrow have done another excellent job exposing the 'lesser-seen' films in the best a/v quality.
