Directed by Burt Kennedy
USA 1971
Screen legend James Garner (Support Your Local Sheriff!) is back in the saddle in Support Your Local Gunfighter, a powder keg of laughs co-starring Suzanne Pleshette, Jack Elam, Harry Morgan, Joan Blondell, Marie Windsor, Henry Jones, John Dahmer, Dub Taylor, Gene Evans and Chuck Connors. Hustling gigolo Latino Smith (Garner) arrives in a mining town for an operation, but while in town he overhears that the local mining baron Taylor Baton (Morgan) is looking to hire the notorious gunman Swift Morgan to wipe out his competition. Seizing the opportunity for an easy con, Smith passes off a reprobate cowhand, Jug (Elam), as the dreaded Swift with bankroll in-hand, he plans to head for the hills at first opportunity. Complicating matters are Barton’s suspicious pistol-packing’ daughter, Patience (Pleshette), and the arrival of the real Swift Morgan (Connors). Now, can Smith come up with a scheme to save Jug’s hide, stop the mining feud and win over Patience—or will he end up blowing up the entire town! Directed by western legend Burt Kennedy (Ride Lonesome). *** This Western action/comedy is told in the same tongue-in-cheek manner as its predecessor, Support Your Local Sheriff. Goldie (Marie Windsor), a madam, is a formidable woman, and Latigo Smith (James Garner) knows perfectly well that his disreputable ways will be trimmed considerably should she succeed in marrying him. Instead, he escapes from her and winds up in the town of Purgatory. The town's inhabitants have been expecting the arrival of Swifty Morgan (Chuck Connors), the famous gunfighter. All things being equal, Latigo is happy to be mistaken for Morgan's sidekick, while Jug May (Jack Elam) impersonates Morgan himself. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original
English language. There is some western effects (train, gunfire, limited
horses etc.) and
score credited to Jack Elliott (The
Jerk) and Allyn Ferguson (The
Man in the Iron Mask), sounding bouncy and fun. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
has an audio commentary by filmmaker/historian Michael Schlesinger who
is relaxed and fun focusing on details of the story pointing out
Marie Windsor, Ellen Corby, Blondell and others. Schlesinger was
a classic film distributor, having worked for more than 25 years at MGM.
There are also two deleted scenes and a theatrical trailer.
Perhaps a notch less adept a comedy than its predecessor
