ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion new 4K restoration Blu-ray of Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy gets the nod this week for top spot. As well as brilliant a/v the package is stacked with two audio commentaries and much more. Buy with confidence! Thank goodness for 88 Film's new Blu-ray of Francesco Barilli's The Perfume of the Lady in Black - a fabulous Giallo. The older Raro 1080P was flawed and fans will be grateful of the vastly improved transfer. Sacha Guitry's sophisticated black comedy La Poison gets the Criterion treatment - a strong transfer and many supplements for this masterpiece film. Kudos to BFI for their Blu-ray of Abel Gance's 1938 J'Accuse, improved video, a new audio commentary and booklet. The film is essential. Nice to have a comparable Blu-ray release of Fritz Lang's visually ambitious cinematic allegory Destiny - another stellar release from the Masters of Cinema. Great to finally see Nunnally Johnson's Night People get a proper 2.55:1 aspect ratio transfer and it's a Blu-ray too! Thanks Kino. Another bona-fide Giallo gets a vastly superior Region FREE Blu-ray treatment from 88 Films with Fernando Di Leo's gratuitously erotic Cold Blooded Beast. Silkwood remains a highly entertaining film with impressive performances and comes to Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. The Orchard End Murder was a surprising murder-thriller - a riveting short programme film experience on Blu-ray with plenty of extras from BFI. Shinya Tsukamoto's artsy A Snake in June uses sexual desire as a foil expressing the self-imposed alienation of impersonal big city life. The Blu-ray has a valuable commentary and other supplements. Thumbs up. Chan-wook Park's Thirst has a Catholic priest inflicted with vampirism who becomes sexually insatiable finding a copacetic mate in the process. Such a visual film requires a Blu-ray presentation. Man vs. Beast conflict in the extreme in Hoon-jung Park's The Tiger: An Old Hunter's Tale - available on Blu-ray. Antonio Margheriti's brilliantly titled The Long Hair of Death is a Gothic horror with the magnetic Barbara Steele - a not-quite-Giallo on Blu-ray from 88 Films. My Chauffeur is a cute and goofy 80's playful light romance comedy. Vinegar Syndrome stacks their Blu-ray with two commentaries and more! On DVD Eric reviewed I, Olga is 'An austere, hypnotic story of sadness, madness and murder,' Opening Night (2016) is a musical comedy. I covered Adult Fairy Tales - a late 70's sex-comedy that pushes the boundaries of its era's rating system. Coronet Blue is a fabulous mystery-thriller TV series with neo-noir leanings and a multitude of future stars to spot.

“You’re never going to learn something as profoundly as when it’s purely out of curiosity.”. - Christopher Nolan

Enjoy the most exciting week of your life!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

A Snake in June BD - Rinko and Shigehiko are a strange couple, whose physical mismatch (she a lithe beauty, he an overweight, balding, obsessive-compulsive neurotic) is reflected in the complete lack of intimacy between them. They connect as human beings, but they live more like friends than as lovers and lead nearly independent lives. Both seem comfortable with this coexistence, but the desires that lurk beneath its surface are brought out with the introduction of a third element into the equation. When Rinko receives a package of candid photographs of herself masturbating and the sender (played by Tsukamoto himself) contacts her with the threat of exposing them to her husband, she submits herself to the anonymous voyeur's sexual games. Blu-ray Release Date: September 28th, 2015

Thirst BD - Sang-hyun, a priest working for a hospital, selflessly volunteers for a secret vaccine development project intended to eradicate a deadly virus. However, the virus eventually takes over the priest. He nearly dies, but makes a miraculous recovery by an accidental transfusion of vampire blood. He realizes his sole reason for living: the pleasures of the flesh. Blu-ray Release Date: January 25th, 2010

The Long Hair of Death BD - In the 15th century, a young woman is accused of being a witch and committing a murder. She is burned at the stake. Years later, during a plague, she is revived by lightning. She returns to her village to prevent her daughter from marrying the man who actually committed the murder for which she was executed. 88 Films Blu-ray Release date: July 24th, 2017

The Perfume of the Lady in Black BD - Director Francesco Barilli s hallucinatory giallo horror-thriller stars Mimsy Farmer who portrays Sylvia, a chemist who begins to suffer from strange visions; a mysterious woman in black applying perfume in a mirror appears to her and strangers follow her everywhere she goes. Barilli s psychological investigation into the workings of the mind becomes apparent when it is revealed that as a child, Sylvia committed a horrible crime. The slow progression from successful scientist to a woman on the verge of insanity shows an in-depth look at the intricacies of the haunted mind. This is a remarkable film, weaving reality, fantasy and memory into an almost seamless fabric. 88 Films Blu-ray Release Date: June 26th, 2017

Cold Blooded Beast BD - A clinic for mentally unstable, but wealthy, women is being terrorised by a maniac with a fetish for medieval weaponry. Dr. Keller (Klaus Kinski) and his team are clueless as to who is behind these brutal crimes. Is it a member of his staff, or have one of his charges finally snapped and started to act out on their perverse fantasies on their fellow inmates? 88 Films Blu-ray Release Date: July 24th, 2017

The Orchard End Murder BD - A young woman from the suburbs (Tracy Hyde), bored by a countryside tryst, wanders off to explore her surroundings. When she meets a gnome-like stationmaster and his towering, half-witted railway-worker friend (played by Casualty's Clive Mantle), an initially strange encounter turns sinister among the trees of a nearby orchard. Blu-ray Release date: July 24th, 2017

J'Accuse BD - After surviving the bloodshed of World War I, soldier Jean Diaz (Victor Francen) sacrifices his dream of being a poet for a far more important pursuit: ending war. Turning to science, Diaz dedicates himself to creating technology that will make combat obsolete. Bankrolling the project is tycoon Henri Chimax (Jean Max). But, when World War II becomes imminent, Chimax sees an opportunity to bolster the French war effort -- and swipes Diaz's pacifist invention so it can be used by the army. BFI Blu-ray Release Date: July 24th, 2017

Silkwood BD - The taut Mike Nichols drama Silkwood (1983) was based on the real life case of a plutonium processing plant metallurgy worker, Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep), who discovered corporate powers were covering up radiation leaks at Oklahoma's Kerr-McGee plant. Karen's whistle blower efforts as a union activist to reveal Kerr- McGee's possible radiation poisoning of its employees ended tragically. Karen had been a union activist with the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers' Union who was a vocal advocate for plant safety. Blu-ray Release date: July 25th, 2017

La Poison BD - One of the great late period films by Sacha Guitry — the total auteur who delighted (and scandalised) the French public and inspired the French New Wave as a model for authorship as director-writer-star of screen and stage alike. In every one of his pictures (and almost every one served as a rueful examination of the war between the sexes), Guitry sculpted by way of a rapier wit — one might say by way of “the Guitry touch” — some of the most sophisticated black comedies ever conceived… and La Poison [Poison] is one of his blackest. Criterion Blu-ray Release date: August 22nd, 2017

Night People BD - When an American soldier is kidnapped by the Soviets in the Eastern sector, Van Dyke is verbally assaulted by the soldier's influential industrialist father Leatherby (Broderick Crawford), who demands that something be done immediately. The Colonel realizes that it's not as simple as that: in return for the soldier, he is expected to turn over an elderly couple, both former anti-Nazi activists, to the East Germans, who will probably execute the couple. Leatherby backs off a bit when he meets the couple, then agrees to let Van Dyke handle the crisis in the most diplomatic manner possible. Things come to a head when the Colonel discovers that one of his trusted aides (Anita Bjork) is in league with the Soviets. Filmed on location in Germany, Night People is capped by a deliciously ironic coda. Blu-ray Release Date: July 25th, 2017

Sid and Nancy BD - With the lacerating love story Sid & Nancy, Alex Cox reimagines the crash-and-burn affair between punk’s most notorious self-destructive poster children: Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen—brought to visceral life by brilliant performances from Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. Cox turns his anarchic filmmaking style on the explosive energy of the London punk scene and the degenerate streets of seventies New York, making for an eviscerating depiction of excess and addiction. Through the lens of cinematographer Roger Deakins, the imagery goes from swooning to grimy, and the film’s bleakness is balanced with surreal humor and genuine tenderness, making for an affecting, music-fueled vision of doomed love. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: August 22nd, 2017

The Tiger: An Old Hunter's Tale BD - In 1925 during the Japanese occupation, retired top hunter Chun Man Deok (Choi Min Sik) moves to a hut in a mountain with his son Seok (Sung Yu Bin). Obsessed with tiger skins, Japanese government official Maejono (Osugi Ren) decides to kill all the tigers in the country. The extermination is also an act to destroy Joseon's morale since tigers are the symbol of the country's national spirit. However, their plan doesn't go as well as expected because the remaining tiger is still missing. Joined by Seok, Gu Kyung (Jung Man Sik), the leader of the Joseon hunters ruled by the Japanese army, is assigned to find that tiger but it won't be an easy task because Chun Man Deok is determined to protect the last tiger of Joseon. Blu-ray Release date: August 9th, 2016

Destiny BD - Lang's first major success was inspired by the Intolerance device of mixing parallel settings and cultures. Death gives a young girl three chances to save her lover's life, in old Baghdad, in 17th century Venice, and in mythical China. The tone ranges from baroque melodrama to eccentric whimsy, and the plotting is full of digressions and asides, but Lang's design sense and use of architectural space gives the film a basic consistency. And the plentiful special effects still look amazingly inventive. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release date: July 24th, 2017

My Chauffeur BD - Casey Meadows (Deborah Foreman) is a fast-talking, goofy, rebellious young woman who receives a mysterious note from millionaire Witherspoon (E.G. Marshall) informing her that she's been hired as a chauffeur for his limousine company. She is given a cool reception by her stuffy new boss, McBride (Howard Hesseman). Only O'Brien (Sean McClory), Witherspoon's chauffeur, treats her kindly. In an effort to make her quit, McBride assigns Casey to their most difficult clients. But eventually she is assigned to chauffeur Battle (Sam J. Jones), the uptight and overworked son of Witherspoon. Blu-ray Release date: July 25th, 2017

I, Olga - Olga Hepnarova was a young, lonely lesbian outsider from a coldhearted family who couldn't play the part society desired of her. Frequently bullied and unable to connect with other people, her alienation eventually drove her over the edge of humanity when she was only 22-years old. 'An austere, hypnotic story of sadness, madness and murder,' (The New York Times), I, OLGA HEPNAROVA reconstructs the events that led up to her disastrous actions. DVD Release Date: July 25th, 2017

Opening Night (2016) - Stage manager Nick (Topher Grace) has the odds stacked against him backstage on opening night of the new Broadway Musical One Hit Wonderland. He must corral the eccentric cast and crew after learning that Chloe (Alona Tal) had a drunken fling with the star, JC Chasez (yes, NSYNC's JC Chasez). From prima donna back-up dancer (Taye Diggs), to a temperamental producer (Rob Riggle), to his leading lady (Anne Heche) suffering one accident after another, Nick makes sure 'the show must go on' in this hilarious musical comedy. DVD Release Date: August 1st, 2017

Adult Fairy Tales - Little Bo Peep, Old King Cole, Little Tommy Tucker, Snow White, and many others, have all grown up and are ready for action! These enchanting characters from beloved nursery rhymes sing, dance, lust, and romance their way through this hilarious, naughty, and twisted tale where music, mirth, and merriment are the rule of the day. In a clothing optional land of make believe where everything is possible! See "Scream Queen" Linnea Quigley star in her first feature role in this erotic musical funfest! DVD Release Date: April 24th, 2017

Coronet Blue - From creator and cult great Larry Cohen comes this thrilling and suspenseful espionage actioner starring Frank Converse as Michael Alden, an amnesiac double agent in search of his true identity, while assassins of a mysterious syndicate are trying to locate and kill him. The key to his past might be a meaningless phrase Coronet Blue that for some reason Alden remembers. DVD Release Date: July 18th, 2017
