(aka "I giorni dell'ira" or "Gunlaw" or "Blood and Grit" or "Days of Wrath" )

directed by Tonino Valerii
Italy, West Germany 1967

When Sergio Leone turned Lee Van Cleef into a major star with For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the actor sensibly stayed in Italy to make several more spaghetti westerns, including this one from Leone s former assistant Tonino Valerii that genre aficionados rank amongst the best ever made.

Giuliano Gemma plays street cleaner Scott Mary, relentlessly bullied by the people of the small town of Clifton. When legendarily ruthless master gunfighter Frank Talby (Van Cleef) rides into town, Scott seizes the opportunity to lift himself out of the gutter, and possibly even surpass Talby s own skills. But what is Talby doing in Clifton in the first place?

This lively, intelligent western, notable for the chemistry between its charismatic leads, some memorable action set-pieces (including a rifle duel on horseback that has to be seen to be believed), and a jazzy Riz Ortolani score, is presented here in an exclusive high-definition restoration from the original Techniscope negative.

***

This 1967 spaghetti western stars a master of that genre, Lee Van Cleef, as an aging, half-mad gunfighter. In an effort to regain his fearsome reputation, Van Cleef shoots down a local sheriff. He then finds he must deal with his young protégé Giuliano Gemma, who happened to be the sheriff's best friend. The climactic showdown finds Van Cleef facing down his former Gemma, with each man knowing the other's every move and thought. Also known as Day of Anger, this superior Italian oater was originally released as I Giorni dell'Ira. Its director was onetime Sergio-Leone-assistant Tonino Valerii.

Comments

NOTE: These Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Arrow - Region FREE - Blu-ray (March 2015):  Firstly, Day of Anger existed in two separate editions. In general, the international release version is simply truncated from the original Italian theatrical release. However, alongside minor editing differences, it also contains a unique scene which is not in the longer cut, and which is presented here separately in the extras. Arrow have included both releases in their Blu-ray package. They are at about the same bitrate and we have compared 3 captures below - but the International version looks the same as the Italian.

This is the first Arrow Blu-ray release that I am aware of that is being simultaneously released in both region 'A' (US) and 'B' (UK). It is the exact same package on both sides of the pond to the best of my knowledge.

NOTE: As Michael Brooke informs us on Facebook: 'As the producer of Arrow's release, I can confirm first hand that the UK and US discs are absolutely identical: we only paid for one master, so there's no doubt about this at all! Which means that no matter which package you buy, the discs will play in any Region A or B setup (or Region 1 or 2 for DVD - and in the latter case the video standard is NTSC, to maximise compatibility). The booklets are also identical, but there are minor cosmetic differences on the disc labels and sleeve to do with differing copyright info and barcodes, and the US release doesn't have BBFC logos.'

Thanks to Gregory for including the 2003 SD for comparison. It is a strange SD package - dual-layered yet not anamorphic (widescreen letterboxed.) You can see how cropped it is with so much more information available - notably the side edges of the new Arrow. Actually the SD also looks out of ratio - vertically stretched, and colors really beef-up in the 1080P. It's a strong HD release with solid detail in close-ups and frequent depth. It looks impressive and better than I anticipated.

Audio is transferred via a faithful linear PCM mono track at 1152 kbps in the original Italian and an English option. I didn't notice any dramatic out-of-sync post dubbing, although preferred the Italian-language option. The score by Riz Ortolani (Il Sorpasso, Woman Times Seven, Cannibal Holocaust, The Voyeur, Mondo Cane) supports the film sounding great. His music in this film, is also heard in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bills and Django Unchained. It is the best Spaghetti Western score outside of Ennio Morriconne's oeuvre. The International version also has an uncompressed LPCM. There are optional English subtitles on all three playable versions (long Italian, long English, short English.)

Arrow add some wonderful extras including a brand new, 13-minute, interview with screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi - in Italian with English subtitles, and another new interview with Tonino Valerii's biographer Roberto Curti (author of Il mio nome è nessuno. Lo spaghetti western secondo Tonino Valeri - My Name is Nobody: The Spaghetti Westerns of Tonino Valeri) entitled Money, Myths and Morality running 3/4 of an hour in English. Its a very educational video. We also get a previously unreleased 2008 interview with Valerii running 10-minutes in Italian with English subtitles, the 1.5-minute deleted scene mentioned above and 6-minutes worth of theatrical trailers. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist and a liner notes booklet featuring new writing on the film by Howard Hughes (author of Spaghetti Westerns), illustrated with original poster designs.

What a brilliant Blu-ray package and Day of Anger is often described as 'one of the 3 or 4 best non-Leone spaghetti westerns... ever'. More of Arrow's complete-ness and a sterling example from the genre worthy of shelf space in every cinephiles digital library. Very strongly recommended!
