ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Since my eldest son's middle name was a nod to Andrei Tarkovsky, it's hard not to pick Andrei Rublev for top slot this week. One of the most majestic pieces of film-making I've ever seen and I'm so pleased to have it on competent Blu-ray - thanks Artificial Eye. I was also quite keen on Eiichi Yamamoto's Belladonna of Sadness - a unique and fascinating animated fable - now on restored Blu-ray from Cinelicious Pics. Criterion bring us a Blu-ray of Stig Björkman's Ingrid Bergman - In Her Own Words - a marvelous documentary about one of the most-beloved world cinema stars of all time. Arrow put Jack Hill's The Swinging Cheerleaders to Blu-ray - a mid 70's exploitation effort and Fulci fans will be the only ones to appreciate A Cat in the Brain on a new Blu-ray from Grindhouse Releasing. On DVD Gregory covered two Noir gems on less-than-stellar SDs out of Spain - The Devil Thumbs a Ride is on our essential 'dark cinema' list and The Company She Keeps has two stalwarts Jane Greer and Lizabeth Scott. Eric was working overtime again with eight DVD reviews including Jonathan Demme's Melvin and Howard, an uncredited Douglas Sirk film with Rock - Never Say Goodbye, Hell Hunters with Stewart Granger, Maud Adams and George Lazenby plus the late 90's romance The Proposition. There are 2015 films, with intriguing titles like Sympathy Said the Shark, and Curtain.

""The last man who said that to me was Archie Leach just a week before he cut his throat." - His Girl Friday (1940)

Have a super week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Ingrid Bergman - In Her Own Words BD - Whether headlining films in Sweden, Italy, or Hollywood, Ingrid Bergman always pierced the screen with a singular soulfulness. With this new documentary, made on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of Bergman’s birth, director Stig Björkman allows us unprecedented access to her world, culling from the most personal of archival materials—letters, diary entries, photographs, and 8 mm and 16 mm footage Bergman herself shot—and following her from youth to tumultuous married life and motherhood. Intimate and artful, this lovingly assembled portrait, narrated by actor Alicia Vikander, provides luminous insight into the life and career of an undiminished legend. Blu-ray Release date: August 16th, 2016

The Swinging Cheerleaders BD - Kate, an undergraduate at Mesa University, goes undercover as a cheerleader for her college newspaper in order to expose female exploitation in contemporary society . But instead of oppression she finds love, friendship and a bigger fish to fry: corruption in the football team, headed up by the coach and his pals. A favourite of Quentin Tarantino, who screened it at the very first Tarantino Film Fest, The Swinging Cheerleaders features a cast of cult favourites. Blu-ray Release Date: July 5th, 2016

A Cat in the Brain BD - In this Italian splatter film, director Lucio Fulci plays a horror filmmaker who goes to a psychiatrist because the types of films he makes are starting to disturb him, he suspects that his German producers are Nazis, and he believes he may be a killer himself. Much of the movie consists of clips from Fulci's previous films. Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2016

Belladonna of Sadness BD - But for all its outré female sexuality/empowerment/critique of materialism tropes that may seem dated, it is how the narrative gets there – well, that is where the rubber meets the road. Visually, the film blends intricate, phantasmagoric, acid-trip animation with camera pans over gorgeous, watercolor-infused static paintings. Aurally, it gets even better with Masahiko Satô’s amazing psych rock/free jazz score coupled with a number of original songs that propel the plot. And then there’s the sex: orgies, numerous couplings with the Devil, a snail having congress with a clam, bunnies shooting out of anuses, penises erecting into literal giraffes. Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2016

Andrei Rublev BD - Andrei Tarkovsky's acclaimed epic about the life of 15th century icon painter Andrei Rublev. Rublev (Anatoli Solonitsyn) lives in a world consumed by feudal violence and human degradation, and the turmoil he sees all about him makes him lose the will to speak. After many years of silent travelling around medieval Russia, he meets a young boy who has taken charge of the construction of a large silver bell, and in him discovers the inspiration to speak again. Blu-ray Release Date: July 11th, 2016

Melvin and Howard - Comedy drama directed by Jonathan Demme. When Melvin Dummar (Paul Le Mat) picked up a tramp (Jason Robards) claiming to be Howard Hughes on a highway in Las Vegas, he had no idea that this small act of kindness would change his life forever. After losing his job and his wife, down-on-his-luck Melvin thinks that his life is doomed to fail. Then, a mysterious man delivers to him the Last Will and Testament of Howard Hughes stating that the billionaire had left Melvin $156 million. However, with the authenticity of the Will in dispute, Melvin must fight to prove that the money is rightfully his. Simply Media DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Never Say Goodbye - This emotional drama concerns a WWII medic who marries a German woman but leaves her in a jealous rage, taking their baby with him. They lose touch after she is arrested behind the Iron Curtain after the war. Eight years later, she sees him in a Chicago cafe, rushes across the street to see him, and is hit by a truck. He operates on her and saves her life, and they get back together. Eventually, the daughter accepts her mother, and the whole family is reunited. DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Hell Hunters - Deep in the jungle of Paraguay, Nazi zealot Dr. Martin Hoffmann (Stewart Granger) has been hiding for forty years, searching for a powerful weapon of science that will restore his dream of Nazi domination. Working with the venom of a deadly jungle spider, Hoffmann believes he has discovered such a weapon and, with his cohort Heinrich (George Lazenby), forms a plan to test his evil new serum on the population of Los Angeles; meanwhile, a dedicated band of Nazi-hunters, led by the beautiful Amanda (Maud Adams), is rapidly closing in on them. DVD Release Date: July 5th, 2016

The Proposition - This drama about the efforts of an upper-class couple to have a child takes place in 1935 Boston. When Father Michael McKinnon (Kenneth Branagh) arrives from England to join the St. Jude's clergy, he avoids wealthy parishioners Arthur and Eleanor Barret (William Hurt, Madeleine Stowe). Attorney Arthur, an FDR adviser, and successful author Eleanor, want a child, but Arthur is sterile. Eleanor asks Arthur to pay someone to impregnate her, and Harvard law student Roger Martin (Neil Patrick Harris) is hired. He profits considerably, since he is required to return for several attempts. DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Sympathy Said the Shark - During a storm, a young couple reluctantly lets their estranged friend inside. He's soaked, bloodied, and insisting that someone is trying to kill him. The night is soon sent off the rails, as all three must confront dark secrets in the face of a powerful threat that comes knocking. The story is told with innovative camera work, shifting from the explicit first person POVs of each main character. DVD Release Date: June 6th, 2016

Curtain - Horror written and directed by Jaron Henrie-McCrea and starring Danni Smith. After moving into a new apartment, former nurse Danni (Smith) begins to experience strange phenomena in her bathroom. When things start disappearing through a mysterious vortex in the wall, Danni recruits friend Tim (Tim Lueke) to help her investigate. However, with the portal leading them into an evil alternate dimension, the pair soon realise they face a desperate battle to survive. DVD Release Date: July 18th, 2016

In the Club - Season 2 - Second series of the British drama written and produced by mother and daughter team Kay Mellor and Yvonne Francas. Starring Hermione Norris, Katherine Parkinson and Jill Halfpenny, the story follows six couples who are embarking on the beginning of their journey as expectant parents by attending a local parenting class. In this series, Kim (Parkinson) struggles with trying to be the perfect mother and wife, Roanna (Norris) looks for a new job and Jasmin (Taj Atwal) gets some bad news from the hospital. DVD Release Date: June 13th, 2016

The Devil Thumbs a Ride - Steve Morgan (Lawrence Tierney) robs a bank and murders a guard in the process. He hitches a ride with Jimmy Ferguson (Ted North), a stocking salesman returning home from a big party. They stop for gas and pick up a couple of gals… Carol (Nan Leslie), sweet and a bit shy, and Agnes (Betty Lawford), a fun-loving dame. Morgan’s got to keep them out of the hands of the law while not tipping the fact that he’s the guy they’re looking for. After a dubious run-in with a motorcycle cop, he steers them towards an isolated house, the residence of one of Jimmy’s friends. Meanwhile, the hunt is on, including a sharp cop (Harry Shannon), the observant gas station attendant (Glen Vernon), and a night watchman with a taste for the booze (Andrew Tombes). DVD Release Date: February 22nd, 2012

The Company She Keeps - Jane Greer plays a hard-boiled dame so well in The Company She Keeps that the film's outcome remains in doubt right up to the end. Placed in the custody of parole officer Joan (Lizabeth Scott), Diane (Greer) immediately makes a play for Joan's boyfriend, newspaper columnist Larry (Dennis O'Keefe). Despite the nagging belief that Diane is just plain no good, Joan magnanimously tries to smooth the path of true love for the girl and Larry. Despite the engaging performances of the stars and the smooth direction of John Cromwell, The Company She Keeps failed to connect with audiences, and ended up a $315,000 loser. Trivia alert: that lady in the train terminal with the two unruly kids is Dorothy Bridges, the wife of actor Lloyd Bridges. And those two troublesome tots are Dorothy and Lloyd's sons Beau and Jeff.
