Podcast interview with Gary Tooze of DVDBeaver HERE.

We have started a Patreon page with the hopes that some of our followers would be willing to donate to keep DVDBeaver alive. We are a small niche, so your generosity is vital to our existence.

We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions. NEW AUCTION ITEM POSTED THIS WEEK!

To those that are unfamiliar, Patreon is a secure/verified third-party service where users can agree to a monthly donation via credit card or PayPal by clicking HERE.

BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), Barnes & Noble, TCM, Warner Archive and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon Prime

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I still remain a very big fan of A Few Good Men and the 4K UHD transfer is substantially superior to the old MPEG2 Sony Blu-ray. The upgrade is huge and the film, from Sorkin's screenplay, has sincerely brilliant performances and a memorable climax. We strongly endorse the 4K as essential. Joseph Losey's Galileo is a Fascinating bio-pic that Kino have transferred to Blu-ray. Highly interesting cinema. Giancarlo Santi's The Grand Duel, on Arrow Blu-ray, is a delicious spaghetti western with genre-king Lee Van Cleef as a grizzled ex-sheriff on a mission of revenge. Madame X is a beautifully colorful, noir-leaning (although has been called neo-noir) an d a 60's murder-drama with Lana Turner, John Forsythe, Ricardo Montalban, Burgess Meredith Virginia Grey - now on Blu-ray with commentary from Kino. Arabian Adventure is a late 70's, children's fantasy-adventure romp that carries some serious nostalgia and the Blu-ray has a director commentary. Still in the family-film genre, we also get Ring of Bright Water where your daydream of exiting the hectic rat-race in a beautiful setting... your pet Otter - comes true. A wonderfully sweet film on Blu-ray (with new commentary) is available. The Uncanny is a Brit anthology horror with stalwarts Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, Joan Greenwood, Donald Pleasence, Samantha Eggar with a nemesis of evil cats focusing on murder. Eyebrows raised! On Region FREE Blu-ray from Severin. .

"People look at me as if I were some sort of monster, but I can't think why. In my macabre pictures, I have either been a monster-maker or a monster-destroyer, but never a monster. Actually, I'm a gentle fellow. Never harmed a fly. I love animals, and when I'm in the country I'm a keen bird-watcher.." Peter Cushing

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Galileo BD - Filmed in England, Galileo is based on Charles Laughton's 1947 adaptation of the play by Bertolt Brecht, which, like this 1975 film, was directed by Joseph Losey. Israeli film-star Topol plays the 17th century Italian astronomer, whose theories run contrary to the edicts of the Catholic Church. Forced to renounce his ideas about planetary movement, Galileo nonetheless holds fast to those beliefs to the end of his days, certain that time will vindicate him. Brecht's trademarked "alienation" technique, wherein the audience is constantly reminded that it is watching a play, is muted by Losey's cerebral direction. Blu-ray Release Date: June 25th, 2019

The Uncanny BD - In 1977, legendary Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky teamed with Canadian producer Claude Héroux for the anthology shocker. Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, Donald Pleasence, Samantha Eggar, Susan Penhaligon, John Vernon and Alexandra Stewart star in this grisly portmanteau about a paranoid writer (Cushing) who must convince his publisher (Milland) that all cats are unholy fiends based on three tales of kitty carnage. Blu-ray Release Date: May 28th, 2019

Arabian Adventure BD - The evil Caliph Alquazar (Christopher Lee) has his soul imprisoned in a mirror. The only thing now capable of defeating him is the magical Rose of Elil. And so Alquazar recruits the adventurer Hasan (Oliver Tobias), who claims to be a prince, to go and obtain the Rose of Elil, promising Hasan the hand of Princess Zuleira (Emma Sammsy) in return. Joined by young rogue Majeed (Puneet Sira) and his pet monkey, Hasan fights the perils on the Island of Elil to complete the quest, unaware that all that awaits him at the end is Alquazar’s treachery. Blu-ray Release Date: May 28th, 2019

Ring of Bright Water BD - An unlikely friendship… one extraordinary adventure! Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, the husband-and-wife team who starred alongside Elsa the Lion in Born Free, now share the screen with Mij, a delightfully mischievous otter who’ll enchant viewers of all ages in this bright, wholesome, captivating and endearing film. Middle-aged bachelor Graham Merrill (Travers) has a nice, quiet life in London, but his fun-loving new roommate Mij is about to change everything. Curious and playful, this otter has better things to do than sit around a stuffy apartment, so Graham decides to move to the coast of Scotland where Mij can frolic to his heart’s content. Once there, they meet Mary (McKenna), and the unlikely trio begin an incredible journey of friendship and discovery that will transform their lives forever. Blu-ray Release Date: May 21st, 2019

Madame X BD - Lana Turner plays Holly, the neglected wife of a diplomat and mother of a young son. She has an affair with a playboy, and is implicated in his death. To avoid tainting her family with scandal, Holly disappears, leaving them to believe she's dead. Over the years Holly sinks into a life of degradation, until another death leaves her on trial for murder...defended by the son who's unaware of who she is. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: May 28th, 2019

A Few Good Men 4K UHD - A taut script and bravura performances distinguish Rob Reiner's masterfully directed adaptation of the award-winning play written by Aaron Sorkin. Tom Cruise heads the powerhouse cast, portraying a callow Navy lawyer who defends two young Marines accused of murdering a fellow Leatherneck on their Guantánamo Bay base. Although he's got only three major scenes, Jack Nicholson sparkles as the stern commanding officer, a much-decorated veteran who resents Cruise's intimation that the accidental death resulted from the misinterpretation of orders from higher-ups. Nicholson's fiery courtroom confrontation with Cruise precipitates a shattering climax, and it has come to rank among the most memorable sequences in any Hollywood movie. 4K UHD Release Date: November 7th, 2017

The Grand Duel BD - Genre stalwart Lee Van Cleef stars as a gnarled ex-sheriff called Clayton who comes to the aid of young Philipp Wermeer (Alberto Dentice), a fugitive framed for the murder of a powerful figure called The Patriarch. Clayton helps Philipp fend off attacks from bounty hunters in a series of thrilling shootouts before the two make their way to Jefferson to confront three villains known as the Saxon brothers, and reveal who really killed The Patriarch.
