Directed by Denis Héroux
UK 1977

In 1977, legendary Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky (ASYLUM, AND NOW THE SCREAMING STARTS) teamed with Canadian producer Claude Héroux (SCANNERS, VIDEODROME) for the anthology shocker CelluloidDiaries.com calls "highly entertaining… the best killer cat movie there is!" Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, Donald Pleasence, Samantha Eggar (THE BROOD), Susan Penhaligon (PATRICK), John Vernon (POINT BLANK) and Alexandra Stewart (GOODBYE EMMANUELLE) star in this grisly portmanteau about a paranoid writer (Cushing) who must convince his publisher (Milland) that all cats are unholy fiends based on three tales of kitty carnage. Directed by Denis Héroux (NAKED MASSACRE) from a screenplay by Michel Parry (XTRO) with cinematography by Harry Waxman (THE WICKER MAN), THE UNCANNY is now scanned from an inter-negative recently discovered in a London vault.

***

In an attempt to sell his manuscript, a writer tries to persuade a prospective publisher that cats are ultimately evil by providing him with three different stories of kitty brutality in this anthology of horror.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Severin Films Blu-ray (May 2019): Severin Films have unleashed the bizarre British (produced in Canada) horror anthology, "The Uncanny" on a single-layered 1080P Blu-ray. The film has been scanned from an inter-negative recently discovered in a London vault. Damage is present but only appears sporadically There is a certain waxiness to the image, showing only a moderate clarity. There is still a fair amount of grain, giving the film a nice texture. Contrast levels could be stronger, with shadows often looking a little too light, and lacking variety. Not a bad transfer, given the source. For fans who were lucky enough to catch this film on TV or at a rare theatrical presentation, this Blu-ray from Severin will be music to your ears.

A 24-bit 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio track appears on the Severin disc. Much like the transfer, the audio here is acceptable, yet nowhere near crisp and totally clean. The soundtrack is thanks to Wilfred Josephs
(The Deadly Bees, notable for TV series music in I Claudius and The Prisoner). There are optional English subtitles on this Region Free Blu-ray from Severin.

The main extra here is a 12-minute interview with actress Susan Penhaligon. Other than that is the film's trailer.

This is a wonderfully odd offering from director Denis Héroux (Quest For Fire) and features among its producers, Milton Subotsky (post Amicus). Unseen by many, the discovery of the inter-negative has allowed Severin to release the film on
Blu-ray. Recommended to fans of bizarre (and certainly corny) horror cinema.
