Directed by Kevin Connor
UK 1979
The evil Caliph Alquazar (Christopher Lee, Scream and Scream Again) has his soul imprisoned in a mirror. The only thing now capable of defeating him is the magical Rose of Elil. And so Alquazar recruits the adventurer Hasan (Oliver Tobias, The Stud), who claims to be a prince, to go and obtain the Rose of Elil, promising Hasan the hand of Princess Zuleira (Emma Samms, TV’s Dynasty) in return. Joined by young rogue Majeed (Puneet Sira) and his pet monkey, Hasan fights the perils on the Island of Elil to complete the quest, unaware that all that awaits him at the end is Alquazar’s treachery. Directed by Kevin Connor (The Land That Time Forgot) and co-starring Peter Cushing (At the Earth’s Core), Capucine (The Pink Panther), Mickey Rooney (Ambush Bay) and John Ratzenberger (TV’s Cheers). *** A valiant prince battles an evil sorcerer to rescue his true love in this colorful fantasy, which features high adventure and plenty of special effects. The hero must overcome a number of dangers, along the way receiving help from a beautiful street urchin and a magical rose. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the
original English language. It handles the effects, Arabian traditional music and a
score by Ken Thorne (Hannie
Caulder,
Wolf
Lake, The
Bed Sitting Room,
The Outsider) well creating a fantasy atmosphere from glorious adventure
to seething tension in spots. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray has
a new (2019) commentary by director Kevin Connor hosted by C. Courtney
Joyner. Connor is 82-years old but recalls details of the production
quite well and he has some salient comments on the cast, crew, Pinewood
studio effects and much more. Joyner keeps the conversation going with
some good questions. There is also a theatrical trailer.
This isn't a high-CGI effort but is far from
simple with some extensive work done (models, wires) in the creation of
Arabian
Adventure
that impressive conceptualization. It's a film that is a perfect young
boy's adventure and certainly will carry nostalgia value for many. To
that crowsd the Blu-ray
with informative commentary has our recommendation!
