Directed by Joe Carnahan
USA 2002
A natural successor to the violent thrillers of the 70s, director Joe Carnahan’s
breakthrough Narc brings the genre screaming into a new era, setting the
standard for the modern cop drama with its gritty, unrelenting tone and style. *** When the trail goes cold on a murder investigation of a policeman, an undercover narcotics officer is lured back to the force to help solve the case. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
and
4K UHD
captures were taken directly from the respective
discs.
It is likely that the monitor
you are seeing this review is not an
HDR-compatible
display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider
and notably granular range of color and light. Our
capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard
monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more
4K UHD titles in the
future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our
captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of
skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the
4K system at your home. But the
framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by
this simulation representation.

On both
4K UHD Arrow offer the option of a
newly restored (default) DTS-HD Master stereo track (24-bit) or the
option of a robust and effective Dolby Atmos surround track that
accentuates the violence, sporadic heavy gunfire and police-criminal
interactions.
"Narc" has plenty of violence in the form of beatings,
gun shots and the tracks handle the bass adeptly but the surround has
keen separation.
The film's music is credited to
neo-noir specialist
Cliff Martinez (The
Underneath,
The
Limey,
The
Neon Demon,
King of the Hill,
Contagion,
Traffic,
sex, lies and videotape)
sounding clean, intense and buoyant in the lossless.
Arrow include
optional English (SDH) subtitles on their region FREE
4K UHD
disc and the supplement
Blu-ray
is Region 'A'-locked.
NOTE:
For Atmos - many non-compliant systems will recognizes it as TrueHD 7.1,
but from Wikipedia:
"Because
of limited bandwidth and lack of processing power, Atmos in home
theaters is not a real-time mix rendered the same way as in cinemas. The
substream is added to Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus. This substream
only represents a losslessly encoded fully object-based mix. This
substream does not include all 128 objects separated. This is not a
matrix-encoded channel, but a spatially-encoded digital channel. Atmos
in home theaters can support 24.1.10 channel, but it is not an
object-based real-time rendering. Filmmakers need to remix and render
the TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks with Dolby Media Producer."
The
4K UHD disc has a
new, brief introduction by writer / director
Joe Carnahan. Also
included is a commentary with Carnahan and editor John Gilroy that was
originally on the 2003 DVD.
The second disc
Blu-ray
has a newly filmed 14-minute interview with director Joe Carnahan entitled "Shattering
the Blue Line". Shooting Narc, is a new 10-minute interview with
director of photography Alex Nepomniaschy (Todd Haynes'
Safe.) If You Live Another Day, is a new 1/4 hour interview
with actor Krista Bridges. The Journey of the Costume is a new
19-minute interview with costume designer Gersha Phillips. Making the
Deal, is a 14-minute vintage promotional featurette looking at the
making of the film. The Visual Trip is a dozen minute vintage
promotional featurette looking at the look of the film. The Friedkin
Connection is an older promotional featurette interviewing William
Friedkin and discussing the connections between his body of work and Narc.
It runs shy of 10-minutes. Shooting Up is a 20-minute vintage
promotional featurette looking at the making of the film. There are EPK
interviews with Joe Carnahan, Ray Liotta, Jason Patric, Diane Nabatoff, Alex
Nepomniaschy and William Friedkin plus a theatrical trailer and an image
gallery. The package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly
commissioned artwork by Nathanael Marsh, a double-sided poster featuring
original and newly commissioned artwork by Marsh and an illustrated
collectors’ booklet featuring new writing by Michelle Kisner, a new
interview with producer Diane Nabatoff and archival interviews and articles.
Tom Cruise was so impressed with Joe Carnahan's "Narc" that he,
and his partner, agreed to come on board as executive producer after it was
shown at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. It eventually earned double its
production budget. There are valid comparisons to gritty 70's cop-dramas
like William Friedkin's
The French Connection and Sidney Lumet's
Serpico. I've always enjoyed the performances of Jason Patric (Incognito,
Rush) who is actually the grandson of actor Jackie Gleason (The
Hustler, The
Honeymooners.) "Narc" is a strong
neo-noir - offering a moral debate about 'police justice' and the
occupational hazards of an undercover officer in cities rampant with illegal
hard drugs.
