( aka "Doctor Jekyll and the Werewolf" or "Dr Jekyll and the Wolfman" or "Dr. Jekyll vs. the Wolfman" or "Dr. Jekyll vs. The Werewolf")

Directed by León Klimovsky
Spain 1972

Quite simply the most crazed and delirious film of Spanish horror icon Paul Naschy’s long career. The trouble starts when our favorite El Hombre Lobo, Waldemar Daninsky (Naschy, of course) goes to the infamous Dr Jekyll (Euro-cult fave Jack Taylor) for help ridding himself of the lycanthropy curse. Things don’t exactly go as planned. The results are some of the most bizarre and entertaining moments of the entire 70s Spanish horror boom.

***

This is the fifth film to feature Spanish actor Paul Naschy as Waldemar the Wolfman. Here he comes to swinging seventies' London, seeking a cure to his malady. Unfortunately he meets Dr. Jekyll who injects him with a serum that turns him into the lascivious killer Mr. Hyde. In his top hat and black cloak, Hyde haunts the flesh pots of Soho, while two gorgeous women fight for possession of his wolfman soul... Top grade Euro-horror and definitely the craziest werewolf film ever.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the respective discs.

ADDITION: Mondo Macabro 4K UHD (March 2024): Mondo Macabro have released León Klimovsky's "Dr. Jekyll and The Werewolf" to 4K UHD. A screen before the Spanish version states: "It appears that Dr. Jekyll and The Werewolf was released in at least 4 different versions.
The original Spanish cut, with "Clothed" scenes, a version released in the US with some "Clothed" and some "Naked" scenes, a version released in the UK with some scenes cut and a version available in Germany with all of the stronger scenes intact.
The current owner of the film only has access to the Spanish version. Despite a long search we were unable to locate usable 35mm materials for all the cut or altered scenes. To recreate the most complete version of the film, as presented here, we had to use a mixture of 16mm footage and clips from analogue and digital video sources of variable quality.
Mondo Macabro thanks Don Cunningham for his help in recreating this extended version."
It is described as a "Brand new 4K restoration provided by the licensor." with the Export cut on a second disc
Blu-ray only.

Like Cult Films Django 4K UHD, Umbrella's 4K UHD transfer of Peter Weir's The Last Wave and Criterion's 4K UHD transfers of The Others, Rules of the Game, Branded to Kill, In the Mood For Love, Night of the Living Dead and, further examples, Masters of Cinema's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, ClassicFlix's I, the Jury, and Kino's 4K UHDs of The Apartment, For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, In the Heat of the Night, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as well as Koch Media's Neon Demon + one of the 4K UHD transfers of Dario Argento's Suspiria, does not have HDR applied (no HDR10, HDR10+, nor Dolby Vision.)

The 2160P still has the higher, superior, resolution that exports the grain with prominence, flesh tones may cool slightly and primaries have depth. It's not a massive bump over 1080P but, no question, it is the best way to see the film on digital. There are just a couple of frame-specific marks and, as stated, the Export version, on the second disc Blu-ray, had to rely on SD inserts (mostly nude scenes) to recreate the “uncut” version and we have included some samples below.

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

NOTE: 82 more more full resolution (3840 X 2160) 4K UHD captures, in lossless PNG format, for Patrons are available HERE

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages recently: Paths of Glory (software uniformly simulated HDR), Southern Comfort (software uniformly simulated HDR), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (software uniformly simulated HDR,) The Wages of Fear  (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Roaring Twenties (software uniformly simulated HDR), Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection (software uniformly simulated HDR), Scarlet Street (software uniformly simulated HDR), eXistenZ (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (software uniformly simulated HDR), Conan the Barbarian (software uniformly simulated HDR) Django (no HDR), Lone Star  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Suspect Zero (software uniformly simulated HDR), Count Dracula (software uniformly simulated HDR), Full Circle - The Haunting of Julia (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Warriors  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (software uniformly simulated HDR), Blackhat (software uniformly simulated HDR), Mark of the Devil (software uniformly simulated HDR), Barbarella (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Last Picture Show (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Man Who Knew Too Much (software uniformly simulated HDR), Rope (software uniformly simulated HDR), Frenzy (software uniformly simulated HDR), American Graffiti (software uniformly simulated HDR), East End Hustle (software uniformly simulated HDR), Three Days of the Condor (software uniformly simulated HDR), Witness (software uniformly simulated HDR), Fascination (software uniformly simulated HDR), Lips of Blood (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Others (no HDR), It Came From Outer Space (software uniformly simulated HDR).

On their 4K UHD, Mondo Macabro offer the option of DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel tracks (16-bit) in the original Spanish or a, default, English DUB option for the 'Spanish version' (4K UHD and Blu-ray). For the 'Export version' (only on the Blu-ray) there is lossless English only. "Dr. Jekyll and The Werewolf" is filled with various types of violence and lycanthropic transformation growls. There isn't an abundance of depth. The, surprisingly effective, score was credited to Antón García Abril (Tombs of the Blind Dead, Texas, Adios, The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman, The Loreley's Grasp etc.) and (uncredited) Adolfo Waitzman (It's Nothing Mama Just a Game, Hotel Fear) it supports the film exceptionally well. Mondo Macabro Spanish version (4K UHD and Blu-ray) offers optional English subtitles but the Export version, in English, has none. Both discs are region FREE, playable worldwide.

The 4K UHD disc, with the Spanish version, has only a commentary by The Naschycast (Troy Guinn & Rod Barnett.) They mention the various titles of the film, a lot on Naschy's career, motifs, sounds effects (also used in Tombs of the Blind Dead) and so much more. I thought there were some intelligent observations and educational comments on Naschy and this production. Naschy fans will enjoy their efforts. All other extras are relegated to the second disc Blu-ray. where each version has the same commentary (well slightly differing with the extra scenes in the Export version.) There are also an 18-minuite archival interview with Paul Naschy about the film, plus 22-minutes with with Sergio Molina (son of Paul Naschy & Elvira Primavera.) We also get a 'Career profile of Jack Taylor' - he starred in many Spanish cult films by Jesús Franco and was a big Euro horror celebrity - that runs over 1/2 hour and the actor himself on "Fantaterror" for over 1/4 hour. Lastly, filmmaker Victor Matellano discusses the career of director Leon Klimovsky who was born in Buenos Aires and trained as a dentist. He directed a variety of genre like Spaghetti Westerns, 'Euro War' and exploitation films including Spain's horror film genre - and worked in many other countries including Egypt, Mexico, and Italy. The package has a exclusive slipcover, reversible inner sleeve with new art by Rick Melton with original poster art on each side, a set of lobby card reproductions, and a 20 page full color booklet with new writing on the film by Mirek Lipinski. It was limited to 2000 copies and is now sold-out.

This was Paul Naschy's second film project with director Leon Klimovsky, following their very successful The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman (also available in 4K UHD). It has a lot of the same appeal although it also has the feel that it was produced fairly quickly with a few cut corners. Naschy, who wrote the screenplays for most of his films, is great, as is abused beauty Shirley Corrigan and stalwart Jack Taylor. Hey - the more I watch these Werewolf / Count Waldemar Daninsky (known in Spain as El Hombre Lobo) cycle of films (Fury of the Wolfman, Night of the Werewolf etc.) - the more I look forward to the next one. It sounds like Mondo Macabro's 4K UHD release tried their best to get the 'Export version' in superior quality but it wasn't meant to be. But we do get the Spanish version in 2160P resolution, commentary, interviews, and booklet. Hopefully it won't be long till fans, that missed this package, can get their hands on the Blu-ray
