Directed by Lili Fini Zanuck
US 1991

What happens when two cops stop loving their job...and start living it? This 'emotionally riveting, powerful and unsparing film (Variety) exposes the plight of two narcotics officers who cross the line...and become enmeshed in the dangerous but intoxicating underbelly of the drug world. Jason Patric (Your Friends and Neighbors) and Golden Globe nominee* Jennifer Jason Leigh (Dolores Claiborne) give rich, full-blooded performances (Entertainment Weekly) as undercover officers Jim Raynor and Kristen Cates, partners who become lovers and addicts as they infiltrate the local drug scene in order to bring down a suspected druglord (Greg Allman). But as their relationship intensifies and their drug use turns to abuse, the fine line between the good guys and the bad guys becomes as blurry as their drug-induced vision.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Lorber - Region 'A' - Blu-ray June 15': Short story - the DVD looks like it has a greenish hue when viewed beside the 1080P Blu-ray. Visually everything is better in the higher resolution and colors regain normalcy, the overall image is brighter and there are instances of depth (not present on the SD).

The Blu-ray also supports significant value for the Clapton soundtrack - Tears in Heaven, Help Me Up which sound amazing in lossless plus the subtle riffs in the score and if you are attentive you can hear some Patsy Cline, Terrell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Freddy Fender and some Hendrix. Rush has some impressive music that really suits the narrative. Kino offers the audio in the option of a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround at 1955 kbps separating some of the effects or you can use a buoyant DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel at a similarly robust 1719 kbps. Like the DVD there are optiopnal subtitles (but only in English). The Blu-ray is region 'A'-locked.

Extras mimic the 12-year old DVD with the informative commentary from director Lili F. Zanuck, standard featurette with cast and crew sound bytes, "Tears of Heaven" music video and trailer.

I think I appreciate this film so much for a few things - the direction, the soundtrack but mostly the performances - Jason Patric is fabulous - and Jennifer Jason Leigh doesn't give bad performances. This Kino Lorber Blu-ray is one I will revisit. I've always found this a very impacting film with a great atmosphere. Recommended!
