(aka "Marie-Chantal contre le Dr. Kha" or "Blue Panther" or "Marie-Chantal vs. Doctor Kha")
France /
Italy / Spain / Morocco 1965
French New Wave legend Claude Chabrol, the director of Le Boucher, The Third Lover, Line of Demarcation and L’Enfer, took a turn into the Eurospy genre with this ’60s-chic romp. On a train bound for Switzerland, a secret agent (Roger Hanin, Breathless, Code Name: Tiger) entrusts Marie-Chantal (Marie Laforêt, Purple Noon, nicknamed "The Girl with the Golden Eyes") with a jewel in the shape of a panther with ruby eyes. Unbeknownst to her, this jewel contains a virus powerful enough to destroy all humankind. The fiendish Doctor Kha (Akim Tamiroff, Touch of Evil, Alphaville) is just one among many spies from different nations trying to get their hands on the panther. But the cool-as-ice Marie-Chantal will evade all attacks by sheer female cunning, and shows panther-like qualities in dealing with her male—and female—foes. Francisco Rabal (L’Eclisse), Serge Reggiani (Le Doulos), Charles Denner (Bluebeard) and Stéphane Audran (Les Biches) lead the star-studded supporting cast in this colorful spoof of international espionage capers. *** Marie-Chantal travels by train to her cousin's place to spend a winter holiday, when a stranger - apparently a fugitive from someone aboard - entrusts her with a jewel in the shape of a tiger with ruby eyes. Unknown to her, these false jewels contain a virus powerful enough to destroy all humankind. Doctor Kha is just one among many spies from different nations trying to get their hands on the tiger, or Marie-Chantal... It will give any nation a tremendous control over all others! Marie-Chantal, a snob girl, will evade all attacks by sheer female cunning, and shows tigerish qualities in dealing with her male, and female foes. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the
original French language. Blue Panther
has aggressive sequences with attacks but rarely any gunfire. The audio
has similar rough edges to the video, but nothing I found fatally
distracting - it lacks a smoothness, would be how I describe it. The
score is credited to Gregorio García Segura and Pierre Jansen (Claude Chabrol's
Line of Demarcation,
The Third Lover,
Ophelia,
Ten Days Wonder,
Le Boucher,
La femme infidèle and
Les Biches to name a few),
adding flavor to the film's thriller intentions. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
I found Claude Chabrol's Blue Panther
very intriguing - much less a comedy than I was anticipating and more a
stylish, serious, master-criminal thriller - touching occasional 'spoof
status' . It has an impressively strong female lead of
Marie-Chantal. I wish it was a series with
Marie Laforêt. It's unique in a few regards certainly also evoking
memories of films beyond this euro-centric genre. The Kino Blu-ray
has the
"4K Restoration from the Original Camera
Negative" providing the best appearance the film is likely to ever
get in this format, 24-bit audio and an expert commentary. We,
absolutely, recommend!
