(aka "The Third Lover" or "The Eye of Evil")
From Claude Chabrol, the legendary director of Les Bonnes Femmes, Line of Demarcation, Les Biches, Le Boucher and L’Enfer, comes this suspenseful drama starring the great Stéphane Audran (The Twist, Babette’s Feast), Jacques Charrier (The Seven Deadly Sins, The Oldest Profession) and Walther Reyer (Tiger of Bengal, Journey to the Lost City). Albin Mercier (Charrier), a failed and disillusioned journalist, is sent to Germany to cover an event. There, he meets a successful writer (Reyer) who’s happily married to a Frenchwoman named Hélène (Audran). Bitterly jealous, yet besotted with the beautiful Hélène, he decides to ruin the couple’s lives. This cunning critique of the bourgeoisie was beautifully shot by the great Jean Rabier (Purple Noon, Elevator to the Gallows). *** André Mercier, a journalist known as Albin Mercier, is a failed, embittered writer. Sent to cover an event in Germany, he gets to know Andreas Hartmann, another writer who, for his part, has not... failed. The successful Andreas is married to Hélène, a beautiful Frenchwoman. Both attracted to her and jealous of the couple's happiness, Mercier decides to shatter it. Taking advantage of the absence of Andreas, off on a business trip, he tries to seduce Hélène and to become her lover. But things do not go according to plan... Excerpt from IMDb located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original
French
language. There aren't many aggressive effects but a pleasingly moody
score by Pierre Jansen (Claude Chabrol's
Ophelia,
Ten Days Wonder,
Le Boucher,
La femme infidèle and
Les Biches to name a few), sounding
mysterious , atmospheric and impacting via the lossless. Kino offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Kino
Blu-ray
includes a new audio commentary by Kat Ellinger who discusses the many
instances of voyeurism in the narrative, she spends a fair amount of
time on the career of Chabrol, his box-office slump, how, after The
Third Lover, he would eventually marry the Stéphane Audran
(for 16-years), how landscapes play a key part in the director's earlier
films and how Chabrol admired simplicity in narrative, not making his
plots overly convoluted. She is excellent and we are appreciative to be
able to tap into her intelligent insights. Great stuff, Kat! There are
also trailers.
Claude Chabrol may be our most reviewed
director here at DVDBeaver. Yet we hadn't covered L'oeil du malin
(The Third Lover) as it is quite rare. There are artistic touches
in the film that also reminded me of
Purple
Noon or
The Talented Mr. Ripley. - a jealous, unsatisfied, protagonist
desiring more from his lifestyle... with tragic results. The 4K restored
