(aka "The Lady Killers")

Directed by Alexander Mackendrick
UK 1955

In this gangster comedy to end all gangster comedies, the inimitable Alec Guinness (Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob) is Professor Marcus, ostensibly a musician and academic, who rents a London flat from a sweet old lady (BAFTA-winning Katie Johnson). He tells her that, from time to time, several other musicians will visit in order to rehearse. In truth, the professor can’t play a note, nor can his visitors: he’s a criminal mastermind, holding court over his gang of thieves, including the likes of punkish Harry (the first major film role for Peter Sellers, The Pink Panther), the homicidal Louis (Herbert Lom, A Shot in the Dark), veteran criminal Claude (Cecil Parker, The Man in the White Suit) and punch-drunk One-Round (Danny Green, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad). The gang use Professor Marcus’s flat as headquarters as they conceive a daring 60,000-pound robbery in this killingly funny Ealing Studios classic directed by Alexander Mackendrick (Sweet Smell of Success) from a BAFTA-winning, Oscar-nominated script by William Rose (The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming). Co-Starring Jack Warner (It Always Rains on Sunday, The Quatermass Xperiment).

***

The Ladykillers follows the hilarious capers of a group of small-time crooks, taking on more they can handle in the form of their sweet, but slightly dotty, elderly landlady Mrs Wilberforce (BAFTA Award-winning actress Katie Johnson; How To Murder A Rich Uncle). This group of seedy misfits are planning a security van robbery and rent a room from Mrs. Wilberforce in her rickety Victorian house next to King’s Cross station from which to base their operation. To conceal their true purpose, they pose as a string quartet, though they cannot play a note and are in fact miming to a recording of Boccherini’s Minuet. The gang pull off the robbery but none of them could have predicted that their greatest obstacle to escaping with the loot would be their tiny hostess.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the respective discs.

ADDITION: Kino 4K UHD (September 2024): Kino are releasing Alexander Mackendrick's "The Ladykillers" to 4K UHD and Blu-ray. It was released in 2021 by Studiocanal in the UK on 4K UHD for the film's 65th anniversary. This Kino 2160P has a split-screen restoration example (not listed on the menu) that describes the following: "The feature had general dirt and sparkle throughout but also some very dirty opticals. It also suffered in places from some very severe blue staining. We completed an automated pass via the HD DVNR to eliminate as much dirt and sparkle as possible. The remaining larger dirt and blue stains, along with any other film faults (chemical stains, tears and cue dots), were manually cleaned using the DRS & Paint tools in MTI."

Way back in 2010, we compared the Anchor Bay DVD top the Studiocanal Blu-ray HERE. This 2160P is a resounding improvement in video quality. We get richer, deeper, colors, fine grain texture, better contrast balance and layering, frequent depth etc. It can look occasionally dark and have a pink or blue leaning but the HD presentation should be strongly pleasing to fans of the film. Wow.

"The Ladykillers" was shot in three-strip Technicolor which, if misaligned (mis-registration), can export some funky color shifts, bleeding and instability. But this seems free of that flaw found on the 14-year old Blu-ray. This is cited as a "2020 HDR Dolby Vision Restoration by StudioCanal" and I think the resulting, 1.37:1, 4K image looks exceptional. The second disc Blu-ray is cited as a "2020 HD Restorations of the Original 1.37:1 and Matted 1.66:1 Versions of the Film" and we have made a few matched screen captures below.

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

NOTE: 40 more more full resolution (3840 X 2160) 4K UHD captures, in lossless PNG format, for Patrons are available HERE

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages recently: Torso (software uniformly simulated HDR), All of Us Strangers, Last Year at Marienbad (NO HDR applied to disc), Peril & Distress (And Soon the Darkness / Sudden Terror) (NO HDR applied to disc), The Case of the Bloody Iris (software uniformly simulated HDR), Reptilicus (software uniformly simulated HDR), Risky Business (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Conversation (software uniformly simulated HDR), Perfect Days, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) (software uniformly simulated HDR), Le samouraï  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Castle of Blood (software uniformly simulated HDR), Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (HDR), Fist of Legend (HDR), American Gigolo (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Long Wait (no HDR,) Bound (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Valiant Ones (software uniformly simulated HDR), Mute Witness (software uniformly simulated HDR), Narc (software uniformly simulated HDR), Peeping Tom (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dr. Terrors House of Horrors (software uniformly simulated HDR), High Noon (software uniformly simulated HDR), Picnic at Hanging Rock (Criterion) (software uniformly simulated HDR), I Am Cuba (no HDR), The Demoniacs (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Nude Vampire (software uniformly simulated HDR), Nostalghia (no HDR), Werckmeister Harmonies (no HDR), Goin' South (software uniformly simulated HDR), La Haine (software uniformly simulated HDR,) All Ladies Do It (software uniformly simulated HDR), Old Henry  (software uniformly simulated HDR), To Die For (software uniformly simulated HDR), Snapshot (software uniformly simulated HDR), Phase IV (software uniformly simulated HDR), Burial Ground (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dark Water (software uniformly simulated HDR), Fear and Desire (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf (no HDR), Paths of Glory (software uniformly simulated HDR), Southern Comfort (software uniformly simulated HDR).

On their 4K UHD, Kino use DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. "The Ladykillers" has a bit of physical slapstick comedy with Frankie Howerd ('The Barrow Boy') vs. a horse, Danny Green ('One-Round') trying to catch a bird, in the phonebox etc.. but none of it requires much bass response. The score is by the pioneering English-Australian composer Tristram Cary (Time Without Pity, Town on Trial, Blood From the Mummy's Tomb, Quatermass and the Pit.) There is also some diegetic music in the film; Luigi Boccherini's Minuet in E major playing on the phonograph (a pretense for criminals lad practicing), Silver Threads Among The Gold played and sung in the parlor of Mrs. Wilberforce's house, The Last Rose of Summer played on a musical box at the beginning and end of the film and Haydn's Serenade for Strings Op.3 No.5. Both discs offer optional English (SDH) subtitles and the 4K UHD, is region FREE where the Blu-ray is Region 'A"-locked.

On the 4K UHD and second disc Blu-ray - are two commentaries. The first has film historian David Del Valle (author of Lost Horizons Beneath the Hollywood Sign) and film historian / producer Dan Marino (son of NFL legend!). They talk about William Rose and his screenplay and the adscription of the film as "a gorgeous box of chocolates filled with poison" - they compare it to another Ealing Studio 'Black Comedy" Kind Hearts and Coronets. They talk about director Alexander Mackendrick, Otto Heller's cinematography, performers Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner, and, especially, Katie Johnson. I always enjoy David's comment and Dan's input. Very enjoyable. The second commentary was by Philip Kemp (Cinema: The Whole Story) - repeated from the 2010 Studiocanal Blu-ray. He provides a great overview of Ealing, describing The Ladykillers as the last great 'Black Comedy' from the studio. Kemp has stories and details of the production, including a continuity error and more.

All of the rest of the extras are relegated to the Blu-ray. They appear to be all duplicated from the older Studiocanal release. Forever Ealing is a 3/4 hour 2002 documentary on the history of the studio from 1902 to its resurrection in the year of the video. It is narrated by Daniel Day-Lewis and has video clips with Richard Attenborough, Derek Bond, Colin Firth, Terry Gilliam and many others. Also included are separate, extended, interviews with Allan Scott, Ronald Harwood and Terence Davies (Distant Voices Still Lives.) While a "Terry Gilliam introduction" (3-minutes) is advertised - it is not present nor is on either of the disc's menus, although a 6-minute "Cleaning Up The Ladykillers" split-screen restoration demonstration is on the disc but not on the menus. Lastly is a restoration trailer - presumably for the theatrical re-release in 2021. There are also trailers for other Guinness / Ealing comedies; Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Man in the White Suit and The Captain's Paradise.

Alexander Mackendrick's "The Ladykillers" was the last three-strip Technicolor film shot in the UK and it was Peter Sellers first major screen role. The black comedy involves a misshapen, motley crew, of bungling criminals planning and executing a robbery. Sweet, elderly, landlady Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) discovers this - setting our villains on plotting her murder. Alec Guinness's 'Professor Marcus' has many believe that it was the actor Alastair Sim. As well as successful Ealing comedies, Guinness collaborated six times with director David Lean and for another generation is known as Obi-Wan Kenobi. He appeared in nine of the BFI's Top 100 British films. Aside from the more well-known Guinness / Ealing comedies; Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Man in the White Suit and The Captain's Paradise - there are a number of other highly entertaining efforts from the studio; Passport to Pimlico, They Came to a City, The Square Ring, The Blue Lamp, The Night My Number Came Up, Whisky Galore!, Pool of London, Dead of Night, It Always Rains on Sunday... "The Ladykillers" remains a favorite for many. It's marvelous to see it looking so improved on 4K UHD. The Kino offers a new commentary, the older commentary and more. Absolutely recommended!
