Directed by Sidney W. Pink
Denmark 1961
A group of mining engineers prospecting for copper in the mountains of Lapland
make an incredible discovery when their drilling unearths the remains of a
giant, prehistoric amphibious reptile. A section of the creature’s tail is
exhumed from beneath the frozen tundra and transported to the National Aquarium
in Copenhagen, where it’s placed in a cold room to be studied by Professor Otto
Martens and his research team. But when the door to the room is accidentally
left ajar, the tail segment begins to thaw, quickly regenerating itself into a
gigantic beast! Now loose and embarking on a cross-country rampage, the military
are forced to employ all means necessary to rout the creature - now dubbed “Reptilicus”
- before it launches a full-scale attack on the capital. *** A portion of the tail of a prehistoric reptile is discovered in Denmark. It regenerates into the entire reptile, which proceeds to destroy buildings and property and generally make a nuisance of itself. It can fly, swim, and walk, and has impenetrable scales, which makes it difficult to kill. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
and
4K UHD
captures were taken directly from the respective
discs.
It is likely that the monitor
you are seeing this review is not an
HDR-compatible
display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider
and notably granular range of color and light. Our
capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard
monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more
4K UHD titles in the
future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our
captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of
skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the
4K system at your home. But the
framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by
this simulation representation.

On their
4K UHD,
and first
Blu-ray,
Vinegar Syndrome use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. The Danish version has only a Danish-language
mono soundtrack.
"Reptilicus" is filled with various types of, rather
weak, aggressive effects - mostly smashing of buildings by Reptilicus -
who is fairly passive in terms of grunts and growls. Bass isn't tested
much and the post DUB is fairly awkward. The US cut
score is credited to
Les Baxter (The
Dunwich Horror,
How
to Stuff a Wild Bikini,
Switchblade
Sisters, The
Man With the X-Ray Eyes, The
Comedy of Terrors,
Dagmar's Hot Pants Inc.,
Panic in the Year Zero,
The Beast Within, the
US version of
Baron Blood, etc.)
and also has Tivoli Night performed by Birthe Wilke. The
Danish version has a score by journeyman (191 credits) Sven Gyldmark,
whose two brothers were also composers. That version also has
Tillicus performed by Dirch Passer and children and Champagne
Galop. Vinegar Syndrome
offer optional English (SDH) subtitles (and English on the Danish
version) - and the
4K UHD, is region FREE,
playable worldwide while the two
Blu-rays
are both Region 'A'-locked:
The
4K UHD and first
Blu-ray
have a commentary track (US version) with Danish film historian Nicolas
Barbano and novelist, specializing in genre films, and critic Kim Newman (author
of
Anno Dracula.) Nicolas makes the case that
this is two different film by two very different filmmakers; Poul Bang for
the Danish and Sidney Pink for the US cut. They talk about Ib Melchior, the
locations, the humor removed from the US cut, the miniature effects, the
'regenerating' giant lizard (Melchior's idea,) the idea of a sequel, the
comic book adaptations, the entire replacement of a female character in the
opposing versions, use of shadows, montage of newspaper headlines, Pink
moving his operation to Denmark in 1959 (see
Journey to the Seventh Planet) and much more. Nicolas' accent is a
bit heavy but I enjoyed the edifying commentary.
The rest of the supplements are only on the first
Blu-ray
disc. "Fifty Million Years Out of Time: Revisiting Reptilicus" is a
new 32-minute retrospective featuring film historian/producer Robert Parigi
(Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
and screenwriter/film historian C. Courtney Joyner
(The Savage
B's: A Tribute to B-Horror) talking about
the film. "Pink Goes West: Life After Reptilicus" is a ten-minute
interview with filmmaker/historian Jay Jennings discussing, American film
producer and occasional director, Sidney Pink's career. Pink has been called
the father of feature-length 3-D movies (Arch Oboler's pioneering
Bwana Devil) and
is notable for his role in Dustin Hoffman's transition from stage to screen.
"Invincible... Indestructible!" spends a 1/2 hour with illustrator,
author and film historian Stephen R. Bissette (co-author of
Studio of Screams.)
on Reptilicus and its enduring legacy. I enjoy his enthusiasm.
The Danish version
Blu-ray
has only the longer Danish cut of the film. This
package has reversible sleeve artwork.
