On the verge of bankruptcy, undertaker Vincent Price hits upon a novel method of drumming up business. Together with his cringing assistant Peter Lorre, Price sneaks into the homes of wealthy old men under cover of night and smothers the sleeping occupants to death--then collects a hefty commission when the victims' relatives come calling. At home, Price is continually frustrated in his efforts to poison his senile father-in-law Boris Karloff, who owns the undertaking business. Meanwhile, Price's neglected wife Joyce Jameson takes quite a shine to the shy Lorre. The homicidal undertaker's best-laid schemes go terribly agley when his latest "customer," wealthy Basil Rathbone, doggedly refuses to stay dead. Joe E. Brown has a cameo as a cockney graveyard attendant.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

NOTE: We have already reviewed the first Shout! Factory Vincent Price Collection on Blu-ray, as well as Arrow's Vincent Price Six Gothic Tales on Blu-ray. This, The Comedy of Terrors, Shout! Factory Blu-ray release is part of The Vincent Price Collection II which includes this title as well as The Return of the Fly, House on Haunted Hill, The Raven, The Last Man on Earth, Tomb of Ligeia & Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

The video differences are minimal. The Arrow is more robust and skin tones may be marginally cooler and colors a shade richer/deeper. For most though, this is unnoticeable and the MGM-sourced, 1080P image is quite good with only a very few marks and showing smooth, consistent, visuals throughout.

Audio is transferred via a DTS-HD Master stereo at 1594 kbps on the Shout! Factory and linear PCM on the Arrow. Both export effects that are usually more playful than intense producing a reasonable response with a superior higher end on the Arrow. The score is by Les Baxter (X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, Panic in the Year Zero, US version of Baron Blood, The Beast Within) and is well supported via the lossless. There are optional English subtitles on both and each Blu-ray disc is locked to its geographical region.

Arrow really advance in the supplements with an interesting audio commentary from Price historian David Del Valle plus a wonderful specially-commissioned, 17-minute, video essay by David Cairns entitled Whispering in Distant Chambers: The Nightfall of Jacques Tourneur which charts the career of director. There are also some older interviews including the same Richard Matheson Storyteller - as found on the Shout! Factory - and a 50-minute long one with Vincent Price called "My Life and Crimes". Lastly is an original theatrical trailer and the Arrow package has a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Paul Shipper and it includes a collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Chris Fujiwara, author of Jacques Tourneur: The Cinema of Nightfall, illustrated with original archive stills and posters..

This is a notch above what I was expecting and I place all the credit on Tourneur and Matheson. I enjoyed the characters and light-hearted, but Gothic, atmosphere. Arrow wins as the definitive Blu-ray edition.
