Directed by William Asher
USA 1965
How to Stuff a Wild Bikini finds swinging, surfing, singer, Frankie
(Frankie Avalon, Muscle Beach Party) serving naval reserve duty in Tahiti
separated from his beach bunny, Dee Dee (Annette Funicello, Beach Blanket
Bingo). Frankie, fearing that Dee Dee might be having as much fun as he is in
his tropical paradise, enlists the help of the local island witch doctor, Bwana
(Buster Keaton, The General) to keep an eye on what’s going on back home. And
what’s going on back home is that suave advertising executive, Ricky (Dwayne
Hickman,
Cat Ballou) has his sights set on Dee Dee. And Dee Dee might just be
receptive to his advances. *** How to Stuff a Wild Bikini is considered to be the strangest of the "Beach Party" movies. Frankie (Frankie Avalon) is off in the navy, serving in the South Pacific, and nervous about all of the guys that will be hitting on Dee Dee (Annette Funicello) back at the beach. He makes a deal with an eccentric white witch doctor (Buster Keaton), who conjures up a woman named Cassandra (Beverly Adam) who is irresistible to all men, and she attracts all of the guys on the beach. But complications ensue when lunatic advertising man Mickey Rooney decides to try and make Cassandra a new national sex symbol, and she gets noticed by nutsy bike gang leader Erik Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck), who vows to have her. With enough plot complications to rival A Midsummer Night's Dream, Wild Bikini is laced with satire and some surprisingly good music. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

On their
Blu-ray,
Olive use a DTS-HD 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original
English language. It is another advancement in the film's audio and
score by
Les Baxter (Switchblade
Sisters, The
Man With the X-Ray Eyes,
The
Comedy of Terrors,
Panic in the Year Zero, US version of
Baron Blood,
The Beast Within)
there is also the theme How to Stuff a Wild Bikini performed by
John Ashley and the Cast, How About Us performed by the Mickey
Rooney Beach Girls, That's What I Call a Healthy Girl, Give
Her Lovin, If It's Gonna Happen performed by Annette
Funicello and other numbers. Olive offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Olive
Blu-ray has
One of more sexist and bizarre of the 'Beach'
flics - it's really a disaster but appealing because of it (so baaaad,
it's goood).
Hot Summer is still a favorite. Sad to see Keaton + Donlevy,
Rooney is typically outrageous, Frankie Avalon has, intelligently, a
minor role rather than starring with Annette'... but it remains fun -
the songs, the pretty gals, hunky guys... and someone thought it was
deserved of a Blu-ray.
Some tongue-in-cheek extras may have been a good idea. |
