( aka 'Hot Summer')
directed
by Joachim Hasler
East Germany 1967
"How fun can a movie get? I show the
first 15 minutes of this film to EVERYONE who stumbles into my Home Theater. In
an attempt to define quirky/cool/eclectic... well this is it! East German's
dancing and singing in mostly poor imitations of 'West Side Story' and 'Beach
Blanket' films. Even trying to parody this would not come out as thorough as it
does to itself. Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful!... the only thing that I can
think of that stands out closely is the opening of 'Ghostworld' where we see the
choreographed Indian singers. This film is a hoot! If you haven't seen it you
don't know what you are missing." You just have to see this

Granted this is by no
means a perfect transfer, but a pristine DVD would not fit this
presentations 'feel". It is slightly hazy at times, and my guess is
that it was filmed with low quality equipment. Analog to DVD for sure. Still it is
proper aspect ratio
and the colors are true (no real artificial contrasting or brightness that I
can identify). The
white subtitles are clear and pretty literally interpreted, which again
adds to the charm pf the film. No commentary, but a short featurette on East German
cinema as an extra. Everything is done as acceptably as you might expect. Bravo
First Run Features!
