ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Cohen Media's Blu-ray of James Whale's The Old Dark House has a spectacular new 4K restoration and two commentaries for this pre-code masterpiece of atmosphere. An easy number one recommendation this week. Cy Endfield's Hell Drivers gets its own stellar Blu-ray upgrade, commentary, and this gritty UK film - stacked with stars - and supplements, is at a give-away price. Sold! Yôji Yamada's The Yellow Handkerchief comes to Blu-ray from Twilight Time - this sublime comedic melodrama tugs your heartstrings and deserves a larger audience. Valdez is Coming stars Burt Lancaster in a superior revenge-western and the Kino Blu-ray has the best a/v and offers a commentary. Jacques Becker's Montparnasse 19 is a fascinating bio-pic of artist Amedeo Modigliani - now on Region FREE Blu-ray from Arrow. I loved the steamy Floridian neo-noir China Moon in the vein of Double Indemnity. It stars Ed Harris, Madeleine Stowe and Benicio Del Toro - Kino's new Blu-ray also offers a commentary. Two, different, Hammer Horrors from Studio Canal on Blu-ray; Jimmy Sangster's Fear in the Night has Judy Geeson's character recovering from a nervous breakdown - lurking are new husband Robert (Ralph Bates), headmaster Michael (Peter Cushing) and a mischievous Joan Collins. Blood From the Mummy's Tomb has a 'resurrected Mummy'-angle with Valerie Leon's ampleness holding up the Hammer charm. There are two Olive Signature Blu-ray releases this week - both with Cary Grant; Father Goose has boozy beachcomber Walter Eckland (Grant) as a lookout on an idyllic island getaway while Blake Edwards' Operation Petticoat has our lead captaining a submarine joined by five stranded nurses. Both Blu-rays offer commentaries. Twilight Time offer plenty of fun with Woody Allen's Bananas and Richard Fleischer's Doctor Dolittle on superior Blu-rays. Battling weak elements, Warner Archive bring the Alan Ladd Noir Hell on Frisco Bay to Blu-ray - but not without some inconsistencies. Most may be happy to see the film in widescreen. We finish with three entries found in our 50's and 60's sci-fi-fantasy Blu-ray list - Peter Cushing in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. as the iconic Dr. Who, Bert I. Gordon budget-conscious, and inventive Attack of the Puppet People and two heavyweights do battle in Ishirô Honda's King Kong vs. Godzilla. Again we will try to get to DVDs next week...

"All right... all right... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order... what have the Romans done for us?." Monty Python's Life of Brian

Have a luxurious week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. BD - The earth of 2150 AD is a desolate and hostile ruin of a planet, crumbling at the edge of civilisation, slowly disappearing into the darkness of space. For the future of planet earth now belongs The Daleks, a destructive army of alien invaders who have turned the human race into cowering slaves. Meanwhile deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack. But there’s only one man who could possibly help them succeed in destroying their extra terrestrial enemies and take back control of planet earth. A man of mystery, a man of time and space, a man known only as… The Doctor. Blu-ray Release date: May 27th, 2013

King Kong vs. Godzilla BD - The two biggest monsters of all time battle in the thrilling adventure classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it's a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance in this knock-out film that was the first theatrical release to bring its larger-than-life contenders to the big screen in glorious color. Blu-ray Release date: April 1st, 2014

Montparnasse 19 BD - In tracing the latter part of Modigliani s life, Montparnasse 19, focuses on the key figures during his time in Paris his patron Léopold Zborowski (played by Gérard Séty) and two muses, Beatrice Hastings (Lilli Palmer) and Jeanne Hébuterne (Anouk Aimée) and his gradual descent into alcoholism and drug addiction. The end results, both hauntingly beautiful and savagely ironic, are really quite remarkable. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: November 27th, 2017

Operation Petticoat BD - After the end of WWII, Adm. Matt Sherman (Cary Grant) reads over his log from the USS Sea Tiger, the submarine he captains. Sherman is about to turn over the command of the sub to Lt. Nick Holden (Tony Curtis), who is assigned to squire it until it is destroyed and replaced by a nuclear vessel. The movie unwinds in flashback as Sherman recalls some of the events in the sub's life--particularly how that life was renewed when he became determined to raise the Sea Tiger in the wake of an attack in Manila Bay. Olive Signature Blu-ray Release date: November 28th, 2017

Father Goose BD - On an island in the South Seas, Walter Eckland (Cary Grant) lives a quiet life. That changes when he's persuaded to serve as a lookout for the Allies, watching for enemy ships. Eckland, whose main interest is drinking, proves bad at his job and is sent to fetch a replacement from another island. Instead he finds a stranded teacher, Catherine (Leslie Caron), and her pupils. After Eckland brings the group to his island, romantic sparks fly between the prim schoolmistress and the slovenly loner. Olive Signature Blu-ray Release date: November 28th, 2017

Hell on Frisco Bay BD - Screen icon Alan Ladd produces and stars in this crime spectacle, shot on location in noir central – San Francisco. Steve Rollins (Ladd) is both ex-cop and ex-con, recently sprung from the stir. Spurning both love (Joanne Dru, as a songstress spouse who strayed) and friendship (William Demarest as his ex-police partner), Steve has one singular quest: Kill whoever set him up for murder, or die trying. Blending adult drama, detective story and noir, Hell on Frisco Bay is a cinema stew that’s heavy on the savor and the flavor, thanks to its colorful CinemaScope and a top-notch supporting ensemble. Heading that ensemble is Edward G. Robinson, delivering one of his most unforgettable mobsters, the utterly repulsive and remorseless Vic Amato. Blu-ray Release date: October 24th, 2017

Doctor Dolittle BD - Doctor Dolittle is a world-renowned veterinarian who speaks a wide array of animal languages. He sets off from his home... in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, England, in search of the Great Pink Sea Snail. In so doing, he and his friends meet such exotic creatures as the Pushme-Pullyu and the Giant Moon Moth. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release date: November 2017

Bananas BD - When bumbling product tester Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) is jilted by his politically-aware girlfriend Nancy (Louise Lasser), he decides that an awareness-raising holiday is in order. So he heads to the tiny Central American republic of San Marcos, only to become kidnapped by anti-government rebels, triggering a series of unlikely events that sees Mellish himself become both President and the FBI's number one target. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release date: November 2017

Valdez is Coming BD - Adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel, Valdez is Coming stars Burt Lancaster in the title role. A scrupulously honest Mexican-American marshal, Bob Valdez is double-crossed and humiliated by wealthy, unscrupulous rancher Jon Cypher. Since Cypher has the law on his side, Valdez is obliged to mete out his own justice. He kidnaps Cypher's mistress Susan Clark to force the rancher's hand. Kino Blu-ray Release date: December 19th, 2017

The Yellow Handkerchief BD - Another slice of reality from the masterful creator of the Tora-san series, Yôji Yamada. A sublime comedic melodrama reaching tear-jerker proportions. Three unrelated (and unknown to each other) characters share an eventful road-trip with one slowly releasing information in sporadic flashbacks of his recent past. References to the Tony Orlando and Dawn song "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree" will abound, but Yamada consistently shows his talented story-telling techniques especially in the area of the affectionate human spirit dramas. A near masterpiece! Blu-ray Release Date: November, 2017

China Moon BD - Bailey works from a brilliantly crafted, often inspired screenplay from Roy Carlson. Especially early on in the picture, the partnership works at a very high level, for example when Bodine and Rachel first meet, and the seductive sparing between them begins a showerstorm of verbal sparks. With "China Moon," Bailey steps up to make his debut as a director after years as a cinematographer working for the likes of Larry Kasdan and Paul Schrader. And it's clear from this impressive debut that Bailey has been keeping his eyes open too. Blu-ray Release date: December 12th, 2017

The Old Dark House BD - A group of travelers, caught in the kind of torrential downpour that's most often seen in the movies, seek shelter in a gothic mansion that's populated by a group of oddly hospitable weirdoes. After a night filled with unnerving banter, dark family secrets, and, of course, attempted murder, the travelers retreat to their cars. There's even a psychotic relative locked in an upper room, but revealing much more than that would spoil the fun. Blu-ray Release date: October 24th, 2017

Attack of the Puppet People BD - Mr. Franz is a kindly, old, silver-haired doll-maker ... who turns people into living puppets! He then forces his human re-inventions to put on parties and sing to him! But one day, tired of being toyed with, the puppets launch an attack, and suddenly Mr. Franz finds he’d better stop playing (and start praying) because the miniature moppets are hell-bent on revenge! Blu-ray Release date: November 14th, 2017

Fear in the Night BD - One of those neatly constructed but slightly mechanical psycho-thrillers which make you feel as if someone is pushing buttons connected to electrodes in your brain. Geeson plays a young woman recovering from a nervous breakdown who is terrorised into wanting to kill the aged, deranged headmaster of the prep school where her husband (Bates) teaches. What she doesn't know is that Bates is in league with the headmaster's wife (Collins). Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2017

Blood From the Mummy's Tomb BD - Lensed in garish Technicolor and obsessed with star Valerie Leon's admirably ample bosom and sultry looks, Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971) is pure Hammer horror: equal parts chills and thrills, unfolding in an often helter skelter manner. Margaret (Leon) is the reincarnation of the ancient Egyptian priestess Queen Tera. The daughter of a famous Egyptologist, Professor Fuchs (Andrew Keir), Margaret dreams nightly about an Egyptian queen whose hand is severed by her high priests in hopes of limiting her supernatural powers. Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2017

Hell Drivers BD - Energetic and violent trucking thriller marked by the raw, angry edge of the best of blacklist victim Endfield's Hollywood work, and by his appreciation (shared, oddly enough, by fellow exile Joseph Losey) of the markedly out-of-the-mainstream talent of Stanley Baker. Playing an ex-con hired as one of a team of drivers forced to drive at dangerous speeds in rattletrap lorries over rugged roads to meet the daily quota of loads to be delivered (a touch of The Wages of Fear here), Baker further becomes involved in a deadly duel with a sadistic rival (McGoohan) on his way to smashing the haulage company's racket.
