ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): This week leans heavily to UK release and to Boxsets. The latter is highlighted by Arrow's Four Film Noir Classics Limited Edition Blu-ray boxset which has Robert Siodmak's deliciously Freudian The Dark Mirror, Fritz Lang's sinister-romance Secret Beyond the Door..., Abraham Polonsky's brutal, poetic, moral noir, Force of Evil, and Joseph H. Lewis ultra-stylish The Big Combo - which we have all compared to other DVD and Blu-ray releases. Noir aficionados should consider this Region FREE, 4 Blu-ray, set a must own! We also reviewed Indicator's Ray Harryhausen Volume Two which includes favorites Mysterious Island, First Men in the Moon and Jason and the Argonauts. Fans will love the extensive book, and nab this fantasy gem Blu-ray boxset immediately - before it goes out of print. Thanks to the Blu-ray, I gained a new appreciation of Mike Nichols' Wolf both as a subtle satire and a modern homage of Jacques Tourneur and Universal horrors of the 30's and 40's. Irvin Kershner’s interesting serial-murder mystery thriller Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones has arrived on Blu-ray and its a stylish and intriguing even as an artefact of the late 70's. Street Trash has been put on Blu-ray by 88 Films in the UK. It remains a fun, intentionally classless foray into an impending hobo holocaust. Much to enjoy. DVDs back again next week...

"Pointy Birds" O pointy birds, O pointy pointy, Anoint my head, Anointy-nointy." Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) from The Man with Two Brains

Have a super week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

First Men in the Moon BD - When scientists in the year 1964 are confused by evidence of a long-ago space flight, nonagenarian Arnold Bedford (Edward Judd) explains all. Back in 1899, Bedford, eccentric scientist Joseph Cavor (Lionel Jeffries) and heroine Kate Callender (Martha Hyer) took a trip to the moon in a home-made space vehicle. Once on the lunar surface, they encountered an alien civilization resembling an ant colony, complete with "queen," soldiers and workers. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 13th, 2017

Jason and the Argonauts BD - Jason is the surviving son of Aristo ("Aeson" of the written legend ) and has been prophesied to take the throne of Thessaly from King Pelias. Pelias murdered Jason's father and sister, Briseis, 20 years prior ( other sister Phoilomela survives ). Unknowingly Jason saves him from drowning one day, losing his shoe in the process. The lost shoe alerts Pelias of the prophecy of his arrival as warned by the Oracle ( actually the God Hermes in disguise ): "Beware a stranger who wears but a single sandal". Under a guise of friendship, Pelias persuades Jason to travel to Colchis, at the end of the world, in an attempt to abscond with the "Golden Fleece"; a golden ram’s hide with mystical powers of healing. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 13th, 2017

Mysterious Island BD - Mysterious Island (1961) opens with a spectacular clash of signature Bernard Herrmann brass; from then on, it’s a headlong rush from one thrill-packed set-piece to the next. This classic fantasy adventure tale, the best of many screen adaptations of Jules Verne’s sequel to his own Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, is the inspired collaboration of a superb action director—Cy Endfield, who would give us one of the greatest of all true-life epics, 1964’s Zulu—and an authentic Hollywood genius: Ray Harryhausen, inventor of the film’s “SuperDynaMation” stop-motion animation process and a “total” filmmaker, spearheading the story, art direction, and design. Indicator Blu-ray Release Date: November 13th, 2017

Street Trash BD - In the sleazy, foreboding world of winos, derelicts and drifters in lower Manhattan, two young runaways - eighteen-year-old Fred (Mike Lackey) and his younger brother, Kevin (Mark Sferrazza) - live in a tire hut in the back of an auto wrecking yard. Life is hard, but the most lethal threat to the boys is the mysterious case of 'Tenafly Viper' wine in Ed's liquor store window. The stuff is forty years old... and it's gone bad. REAL bad! Anyone who drinks it melts in seconds, and it's only a dollar a bottle! 88 Films Blu-ray Release date: November 20th, 2017

Wolf BD - When a mild-mannered, middle-aged book editor (Jack Nicholson) gets bitten by a wolf, it gives him a shot of confidence over younger colleagues, highly tuned senses and a few new lycanthropic appetites. Like a clever New Yorker cartoon, this urbane horror film satirizes middle age in New York's cutthroat social and business worlds. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: November 20th, 2017

Eyes of Laura Mars BD - Irvin Kershner’s stylish, violent cult thriller – from an original screenplay by John Carpenter – stars iconic star Faye Dunaway as glamorous fashion photographer Laura Mars, who begins to experience horrific visions when she ‘sees’ a series of brutal murders as they happen. Blu-ray Release date: November 20th, 2017

Force of Evil BD - In New York City, unscrupulous lawyer Joe Morse (John Garfield), has the opportunity to make it big by teaming up with cutthroat gangster Ben Tucker (Roy Roberts) to consolidate the numbers racket. The only hitch in the plan is Morse's brother, Leo (Thomas Gomez), who refuses to involve his bank in the plan. As a result, Leo's bank would go from being saved to being another casualty in Morse and Tucker's thirst for power. Now, Morse must choose between money and family. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: November 20th, 2017

Secret Beyond the Door BD - Joan Bennett is the woman who falls for an architect and promptly marries him, not asking as many questions about his past as she should have done. She soon discovers that he has a few skeletons in his cupboard, maybe even literally. Determined to find out the secret beyond the door of his mansion, she soon believes herself to be in mortal danger. Another of the Freudian thrillers that were so in fashion in the 1940s, director Lang manages to turn on the suspense but is more interested in the art of film-making than what makes his protagonist tick. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: November 20th, 2017

The Dark Mirror BD - Impressively unusual thriller with typically simplistic Freudian elements as psychiatrist Ayres is called in by the police to help investigate a murder committed by one of two identical twins...but which one? Intriguing cat-and-mouse games and perverse power struggles as both he and we try to fathom which of the sisters is the warped psycho, with de Havilland (in the dual role) and Siodmak managing admirably to counteract the contrived plot. What really makes it work, though, is Siodmak's firm grasp of mood and suspense; the opening scene, in which the camera prowls a darkened room until it finds a corpse, sets the tone perfectly for the sense of uncertainty and chaos that follows. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: November 20th, 2017

The Big Combo BD - Away from Alton’s bravura compositions, which kick in right from the opening titles (themselves an adrenalin rush of nighttime cityscapes and melodramatic 50s jazz) the film’s exposition is static, even flat at times. My theory is that cinematographer Alton effectively directed the film’s highlights. For chilling point-of-view can anything top the silent barking of the assassins’ tommy guns as the victim’s hearing aid is ripped away? Alton’s fingerprints are also undeniably all over The Big Combo’s famous final shot where, echoing Casablanca, the two survivors walk together (but not touching) side by side into the all-enveloping fog that is their future.
