ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Not surprisingly, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca on 4K Restored Criterion Blu-ray gets the call for number one selection this week. A highly impressive presentation stacked with supplements in the 2 Blu-ray package. Kudos to The Masters of Cinema for their Blu-ray of Joseph von Sternberg's The Saga of Anatahan which nudge the previous 1080P with a new 3/4 hour Tony Rayns piece and a booklet with a new essay by Philip Kemp. King Vidor's Duel in the Sun is an epic western filled with erotic and racial undertones, melodrama, and a splendid use of shadow-play - better yet, The Roadshow version is now on Blu-ray, with commentary, from Kino Lorber. Sweet. The Coen's Barton Fink is on new Blu-ray and offers a decidedly different presentation and package from the older BD releases. The genre-homage film moves from a brooding psychodrama about writer's block blending in fantasy, screwball comedic elements filled with memorable performances. A must own. Kelly Reichardt has come up with another gem in Certain Women, adapted from three short stories by Maile Meloy and getting the 'Criterion treatment' on Blu-ray. Brilliantly realized cinema. Fritz Lang' You Only Live Once is a wonderful Proto-Noir and now on corrected Blu-ray from Classicflix and they add a valuable commentary. How can we resist? Joe D'Amato's controversial, cannibalistic, horror Anthropophagus gets a, Region FREE, Blu-ray update from 88 Films. Abbott and Costello's first independent production The Noose Hangs High gets a Blu-ray release. A cute premise with some thrills and a generally fun, family, time. We need more like it! On DVD Eric reviewed Amnesia, a new European drama from Barbet Schroeder and Series 1 and Series 2 of the excellent, New Zealand crime-mystery TV series The Brokenwood Mysteries. I covered a realistic apocalyptic film, Carriers, with Chris Pine and a carload outrunning a threatening viral pandemic. Fans of the genre will. definitely, appreciate it. .

“Avoid the tyranny of the reasonable voice...it will guarantee a complacency of never trying anything adventurous...”. - J. Michael Straczynski

See you after an inventive week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Anthropophagus BD - Joe D'Amato co-writes and directs this controversial Italian horror. A group of young tourists venturing to a remote Greek island become the victims of a murderous, cannibalistic creature. As they explore the island's abandoned town they become increasingly disturbed at what they discover, only to race back to their boat to find it cut adrift. When they head to a mansion on the island they unearth some clues about their stalker's identity. But this is only the start of their horror... Blu-ray Release Date: August 7th, 2017

Certain Women BD - The expanses of the American West take center stage in this intimately observed triptych from Kelly Reichardt. Adapted from three short stories by Maile Meloy and unfolding in self-contained but interlocking episodes, Certain Women navigates the subtle shifts in personal desire and social expectation that unsettle the circumscribed lives of its characters: a lawyer (Laura Dern) forced to subdue a troubled client; a wife and mother (Michelle Williams) whose plans to construct her dream home reveal fissures in her marriage; and a night-school teacher (Kristen Stewart) who forms a tenuous bond with a lonely ranch hand (Lily Gladstone), whose longing for connection delivers an unexpected jolt of emotional immediacy. With unassuming craft, Reichardt captures the rhythms of daily life in small-town Montana through these fine-grained portraits of women trapped within the landscape’s wide-open spaces. Blu-ray Release date: September 19th, 2017

The Noose Hangs High BD - Two window washers (Bud and Lou) are mistaken for messengers by bookie Nick Craig and sent to collect a $50,000 gambling debt. However, the sore loser has no intention of paying off and instructs two henchmen to rob the boys. To evade the thugs, Bud and Lou quickly decide to mail the cash to Nick, but it accidentally ends up in the hands of a woman named Carol, who spends most of it before they find her. Nick gives the trio just 36 hours to come up with the loot, which he owes to J.C.McBride, a mysterious millionaire whom he has never met and who never loses a bet. With time running out, can Bud and Lou parlay the remaining money into $50,000 in time? Blu-ray Release date: August 15th, 2017

Barton Fink BD - Set in Hollywood during the 1940's, "Barton Fink" is a comic satire about creative egos, flashy moguls, a travelling salesman and a nasty case of writer's block. Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a New York playwright lured to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter. It doesn't take long for Barton's life to erupt in complete chaos. His studio boss orders the serious-minded Barton to write a low budget wrestling movie. Deeply disappointed, Barton returns to his seedy hotel, types one sentence and then¿ nothing. To make matters worse, he is continually interrupted by Charlie (John Goodman), a chatty travelling insurance salesman who lives next door. Eventually they become friends and Charlie tries to help Barton by teaching him the finer points of wrestling. As the clock ticks away and the temperature climbs, Barton becomes more desperate as his life spins out of control. Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release Date: August 22nd, 2017

Duel in the Sun BD - Duel in the Sun (1946) ranks as one of the screen's greatest testaments to obsession. Not only does it chronicle the doomed love between amoral cowboy Lewt McCanles (Gregory Peck) and half-breed temptress Pearl Chavez (Jennifer Jones), it was made to satisfy the two obsessions that drove independent producer David O. Selznick's career from the '40s through the end of his life: his need to outdo his spectacular success with Gone With the Wind and his quest to make protegee (and later wife) Jones into the screen's greatest star. Blu-ray Release Date: August 15th, 2017

Rebecca BD - Romance becomes psychodrama in the elegantly crafted Rebecca, Alfred Hitchcock’s first foray into Hollywood filmmaking. A dreamlike adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel, the film stars the enchanting Joan Fontaine as a young woman who believes she has found her heart’s desire when she marries the dashing aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter (played with cunning vulnerability by Laurence Olivier). But upon moving to Manderley—her groom’s baroque ancestral mansion—she soon learns that his deceased wife haunts not only the estate but the temperamental, brooding Maxim as well. The start of Hitchcock’s legendary collaboration with producer David O. Selznick, this elegiac gothic vision, captured in stunning black and white by George Barnes, took home the Academy Awards for best picture and best cinematography. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: September 5th, 2017

You Only Live Once BD - Joan Graham (Sylvia Sidney) works as the secretary to the public defender. Unfortunately, she's fallen madly in love with a criminal by the name of Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda). Convinced that Eddie is a good man with bad luck, she pulls some strings and gets Eddie released from prison early. The two get married, but while Eddie tries to fly right, he soon discovers he can't change his nature. His past comes knocking at their door, and the couple is forced to go into hiding. Classicflix Blu-ray Release Date: July 25th, 2017

The Saga of Anatahan BD - Anatahan (aka Ana-Ta-Han) represented the apotheosis of filmmaker Josef von Sternberg's lifelong fascination with the Orient. Over a year in the making, the film was the most expensive ever made in Japan up to 1953. Based on fact, the story concerns a group of Japanese marines who refused to believe that their country had been defeated in 1945, and thus spent the next seven years stubbornly manning their posts on a remote Pacific Island. The central character is a woman known as the "Queen Bee," who is marooned on the island along with the marines. As the only female in the vicinity, our heroine is aggressively pursued by every male in sight (von Sternberg capriciously refers to her most ardent suitors as her "drones"). Former Nichiegki Theatre chorus performer Akemi Negishi plays the Queen Bee. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release date: August 14th, 2017

Carriers - Four kids are driving through the desert on the way to the beach, their faces anything but cheery: this isn't Spring Break. They're trying to outrun the end of the world and each other. In Alex and David Pastor's Carriers, no one is safe from the viral pandemic threatening to wipe out the human race. Determined to elude the deadly virus, Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci), his brother Brian (Chris Pine), his girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Danny's school friend Kate (Emily VanCampo) speed across the Southwestern U.S. to reach a place of possible safety. DVD Release Date: December 29th, 2009

Amnesia - A young composer moves from Berlin to the island of Ibiza and begins a friendship with an elderly woman whose painful past has caused her to reject everything to do with Germany, including her native language. DVD Release Date: August 1st, 2017

The Brokenwood Mysteries Series 1 and Series 2 - Detective Inspector Mike Sheperd arrives on assignment in Brokenwood, a small town where memories and animosities run deep. He's an experienced cop with a 1971 classic car, a collection of country music cassettes and an indeterminate number of ex-wives. The new woman in his life is his assistant, Detective Kristin Sims, a by-the-book investigator nearly 20 years younger than her boss's car, who quickly has to get used to his lone-wolf ways. As Shepherd adapts to the slower pace of life away from the city, he soon discovers that Brokenwood is a place of secrets and suspicions. Everyone and everything is connected, and the serenity of the countryside can easily be shattered by violence and death. Filmed amid the beautiful landscape of New Zealand s North Island, these four feature-length mysteries show that murder can haunt even the most idyllic locations. DVD Release Date: August 14th, 2017
