directed by Joe D'Amato
Italy 1980

Joe D'Amato co-writes and directs this controversial Italian horror. A group of young tourists venturing to a remote Greek island become the victims of a murderous, cannibalistic creature. As they explore the island's abandoned town they become increasingly disturbed at what they discover, only to race back to their boat to find it cut adrift. When they head to a mansion on the island they unearth some clues about their stalker's identity. But this is only the start of their horror...

***

Perhaps the most notorious ‘video nasty’ of all time, ANTHROPOPHAGOUS is back to deprave and corrupt a fresh wave of horror film viewers!

Joe D’Amato cemented himself into genre film history with this slickly directed, and sinisterly suspenseful, creature feature which has some unprepared tourists arriving on a desolate Mediterranean island – only to find themselves stalked by a silent cannibalistic Neanderthal! Featuring gory special effects, that convinced some British moral guardians that ANTHROPOPHAGOUS was a legitimate ‘snuff movie’, there is little doubting that this timeless terror totem still holds up today. Also boasting a cast of genre legends, such as Tisa Farrow (ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS), Zora Kerova (CANNIBAL FEROX) and George Eastman (RABID DOGS), 88 Films is proud to present ANTHROPOPHAGOUS, fully uncut and uncensored, and re-mastered for its worldwide HD debut!

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: (August 2017) 88 Films Region FREE - Blu-ray: Antropophagus was director Joe D'Amato's first "straight" horror film, having previously made erotic horror efforts such as Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. The film became one of the infamous titles to feature on the government's Department of Public Prosecutions list (DPP), better known as the "Video nasty" list. It was shot in 16mm with a 35mm printed film format (blow-up). As is clearly obvious there is significantly more information in the 1080P's, same, 1.66:1 frame - mostly in the top and side edges. The image looks better, in all areas, in the HD upgrade. Colors shift and are  are richer, flesh tones more accurate, grain textures are more prevalent, brighter,  better contrast etc. It's a, more, remarkable improvement in-motion.

88 Films use a healthy linear PCM 2.0 channel track with both English or Italian options (both 24-bit.) Effects, screams have some intensity - and depth in the score by Marcello Giombini (Sabata, The Night of the Werewolf, Waves of Lust, Terror Express) is notable. The uncompressed tracks carry the imperfections of the production but sound solid as a replication of the original. There are optional English subtitles on the Region FREE Blu-ray.

Extras include The Eastman Chronicles which runs over 1/2 hour and has George Eastman (playing Nikos Karamanlis - Klaus Wortmann and the Anthropophagus 'monster'). He covers some of the production, scheduling, D'Amato's style, his own writing and production involvement etc. He is very frank and funny. A good piece. There is a short "never before seen" deleted scene, a 3-minute piece with Alessio de Rocco discussing things like skirting the censors. There are the Italian opening and closing credits, a trailer and the package ha a reversible sleeve with original UK Video Nasty Art.

This Blu-ray is, definitely, the way to go at present.. Lots of gruesome, disturbing stuff and some raw style make for an gritty, grassroots, horror presentation. Exploitation extremists and fans of Tisa Farrow (yes, Mia's sister) - as well as those not easily offended - should indulge!
