The success of Stuart Gordon's hit horror-comedy Re-animator meant that a sequel was all but inevitable. The resulting follow-up, Bride of Re-animator - this time helmed by director Brian Yuzna (Society, Return of the Living Dead 3 and Producer of the original Re-animator) - would prove that there was a good deal more life left in the story of Dr. Herbert West and his ghoulish exploits.

It is 8 years since the Miskatonic massacre. Unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead, Dr. West (again played by Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation; only this time, he plans to create life starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan's dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. Surely nothing could go wrong?

With special effects master Screaming Mad George (the man behind the infamous shunting sequence in Society) on hand to contribute a host of characteristically weird and wonderful creations including zombified bats and a one-eyed finger spider Bride of re-animator is a more than worthy successor to Gordon's original cult classic.

ADDITION Arrow Blu-ray - April 2016: Perhaps a silly comparison but it does reveal some interesting details. Arrow's 1.78:1 aspect ratio shows more on the sides than Pioneer Open Matte 1.33:1 but less on the top and bottom. These are 2K restorations of both the Un-Rated and R-rated versions on separate Blu-rays. The Un-Rated is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and looks pretty crisp with some depth and tightness. The R-Rated is only on a single-layered disc and is slightly inferior but obviously a huge leap over the SD transfer.

Both version have linear PCM 2.0 channel at 2304 kbps. The score by Richard Band (The House on Sorority Row, Re-Animator, The Pit and Pendulum, Puppet Master etc.) benefits from the uncompressed and the audio has depth accentuating the mood. The Arrow offers optional English (SDH) subtitles for both versions and it is region FREE.

Extras are endless and are described by Arrow better than I can. There are three (yes three) commentaries on the Un-Rated version Blu-ray. A brand new one with director Brian Yuzna, a group one with Yuzna, star Jeffrey Combs, special effects co-ordinator Thomas Rainone and the effects team including John Buechler, Mike Deak, Robert Kurtzman, Howard Berger and Screaming Mad George and the last with stars Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Abbott. Plenty of fun and production discussion. We also get the 10-minute new featurette Brian Yuzna Remembers Bride of Re-Animator in which the director looks back at the making of the first Re-Animator sequel. Splatter Masters: The Special Effects Artists of Bride of Re-Animator is a new 15-minute FX featurette with a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Robert Kurtzman of KNB, Screaming Mad George, Tony Doublin and John Buechler. Getting Ahead in Horror archive making-of featurette runs 24-minutes and we get two deleted scenes; Meg is Re-Animated with behind-the-scenes footage and the Carnival Sequence the cast and crew discuss this excised sequence. There is also a trailer.

On the R-Rated Blu-ray there is only a 1/4 hour Behind-the-Scenes Reel.

The package is a Digipak featuring newly commissioned artwork by Gary Pullin plus there is a collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by festival programmer Michael Blyth and Re-Animator: Dawn of the Re-Animator the official comic book prequel to the original Re-Animator as well as a perfect-bound booklet containing Re-Animator: Dawn of the Re-Animator, the 1992 comic prequel to Stuart Gordon's original Re-Animator , reprinted in its entirety.

Fans of this series should be all over this - Arrow does it again. There is a German Steelbook with both Re-Animator and Bride of Re- Animator on Blu-ray HERE but I don't know the quality and highly doubt it has the extensive extras (commentaries) of this set.
