(aka 'All Ladies Do It" or "All Women Do it" or "Così fan tutte')

Directed by Tinto Brass
Italy 1992

After five years of marriage, Diana discovers the joys of adultery, claiming that she can save her failing relationship with her husband through betrayal. From Tinto Brass, the director of “Caligula” and “Salon Kitty” comes the stylish, erotic comedy / drama All Ladies Do It, starring the sexy Claudia Koll (Miracolo Italiano). Cult Epics proudly presents the uncut and uncensored newly restored director's cut with vintage and brand new bonus features.

***

More Tinto Brass tom-foolery. In another tale of titillation and comedic flirtations, Diane (Claudia Koll) is happily married to Paolo but due to her extrovert character she regularly winds up in short-lived adventures, which she doesn't keep hidden from Paolo. On the contrary: by telling him, their sexual relationship is fueled with fresh impulses. When Diana experiences a stormy affair with the poet Alphonse, who is obsessed with female bottoms, Paolo gets jealous after all. He rejects Diana, who responds by indulging in a series of sexual excesses with her sister and some friends. After a particularly rough house-party, however, Diana returns to Paolo. For me who enjoy... um... women posterior's , this film is loaded ..um.. cheekiness. I think most know what to expect from Tinto Brass by now.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the respective discs.

ADDITION: Cult Epics 4K UHD (April 2024): Cult Epics have released Tinto Brass' "All Ladies Do It" in 4K UHD. It is cited as being a "New 4K (2160p) Transfer (from the original negative) and Restoration with HDR". The package includes a second disc Blu-ray with extras - it is cited as "New 4K Transfer (from the original negative) and Restoration, presented in 1080p HD". We compared the 2003 Cult Epics DVD with the 2013 Arrow Blu-ray HERE, and below to this new transfer. The 4K UHD is cited as the "uncut, uncensored director's cut" and the image is a monumental and dynamic improvement over all digital editions. The Arrow 1080P was so dull it almost looked like an error and the SD had funky faded colors (orangey skin tones etc.) This 4K UHD transfer breathes new life via 2160P and HDR with rich black levels, true color expression (realistic flesh tones,) and thick consistent textures. There is more information shown in the side edges. This is probably the greatest disparity we have seen of 4K UHD (atmospheric bitrate) over older Blu-ray to date and it bodes extremely well for future Brass 'T+A extravaganza' features in this format like Frivolous Lola - coming out later this month by Cult Epics.

The included second disc Blu-ray supports the new color scheme (see a match below) but the higher resolution, predictably, expresses the film better; tighter, pleasing grain etc.

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

NOTE: 28 more more full resolution (3840 X 2160) 4K UHD captures, in lossless PNG format, for Patrons are available HERE

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages recently: Old Henry  (software uniformly simulated HDR), To Die For (software uniformly simulated HDR), Snapshot (software uniformly simulated HDR), Phase IV (software uniformly simulated HDR), Burial Ground (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dark Water (software uniformly simulated HDR), Fear and Desire (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf (no HDR), Paths of Glory (software uniformly simulated HDR), Southern Comfort (software uniformly simulated HDR), Gunfight at the O.K. On their 4K UHD, Cult Epics offer DTS-HD Master tracks (24-bit) in English mono or stereo or Italian mono or stereo. "All Ladies Do It" is filled with slinky burlesque titillation but no intense audio effects. The score is by Pino Donaggio (Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Body Double, Don't Look Now, Carrie, Raising Cain, Crawlspace, Meridian, Beyond Evil, Tourist Trap etc.) augments the romance and sexual escapades effectively keeping a lighter tone. Cult Epics discs offers optional English subtitles - and is, like all 4K UHD, region FREE, playable worldwide.

The 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs offer an optional commentary by Troy Howarth (author of So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films) and Eugenio Ercolani (Darkening the Italian Screen II: Interviews with Genre and Exploitation Directors Who Debuted in the 1970s.) They talk about Brass's 18th feature and go back to 1983's "The Key" - arguably his best film, discuss him poking fun at Italian culture including religion / the clergy (how the two Nuns of the alley way appear to be male, see HERE,) his cinematic obsession with buttocks, comparisons to Fellini, and the writer / director's iconic status in Italy, explicit-ness and how he transcended the bawdy qualities of his 80's films and surviving the 90s to thrive in the 2000s. They observe his artistic representation, talk about Caligula, the dream-like stylized atmosphere of his films, pastel color, mirror usage and much more. It an excellent primer on the director and this film. Both discs also include a handful of Tinto Brass theatrical trailers (All Ladies Do It Frivolous Lola, Paprika ,P.O. Tinto Brass and Istinto Brass.)

The second disc Blu-ray also has a 1/4 hour 2001 interview with Brass, 10-minutes of outtakes of All Ladies Do It (NOTE: these outtakes were included on the Cult Epics DVD release of All Ladies Do It as a bonus feature. Some of these outtakes are now included in the uncut, uncensored director's cut presented on this disc.) There is also a photo gallery on the Blu-ray.

The 4K UHD package is housed in a double-sided sleeve with original uncensored Italian poster art, a slipcase and has a 20-Page illustrated booklet with liner notes by Eugenio Ercolani and Domenico Monetti. A first pressing (4K UHD exclusive only) includes 4 repro Italian lobby card prints.

Tinto Brass' "All Ladies Do It" is loosely based on Mozart / da Ponte opera Così fan tutte ("So do they all".) It has Diana (Claudia Koll after her cinema debut,) the wife of a young couple seeking adventure outside the monotony of their sex life stretching the boundaries of morality with risqué behavior - seemingly unable to say 'no' to some dalliances. The director shows a unique artifice outside, or skirting the edges, of hardcore pornography. He has strong film influence working with some big stars and is notable for having 'discovered' erotic icon, 80s-90's sex symbol, pin-up girl Serena Grandi (The Great Beauty, Antropophagus, Delirium) with her first starring role in Brass' 1985 Miranda initiating her path of stardom. Koll has become very religious and has dismissed her unabashed central role in "All Ladies Do It". Tinto Brass always hints at sophistication - with social and political subtleties throughout. His cinematic style, framing, use of color and plush sets imbue fantasy while visually exploring feminine beauty - that push 'male eroticism' buttons. The Cult Epics' 4K UHD release of Tinto Brass' "All Ladies Do It" has the highly remarkable and impressive video upgrade, a revealing commentary, booklet and accoutrements. Brass fans who have suffered through marginal digital editions will be immensely pleased with this newer format edition.
