Directed by Barry Levinson
USA 1988

Callous hustler Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is busy working on his next deal when he receives word that his estranged father has died. After traveling back to Ohio from Los Angeles for the funeral, Charlie is miffed to find that although he will receive a vintage Buick from his father's estate, he isn't getting a cent of the three-million-dollar fortune. Instead, Charlie finds that the money has been left to the caretakers of his institutionalized autistic brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Once he gets over the shock of the existence of a brother of whom he seems to have no recollection, Charlie kidnaps Raymond and heads cross-country in the Buick in an attempt to get a cut of the inheritance to pay off some of his failing deals. However, during their adventure, Charlie not only learns how to deal with Raymond's many idiosyncrasies, but he also actually begins to care about his older brother, surprising even himself with his ability to love and his realization that money isn't necessarily the most important thing. Barry Levinson directs Ron Bass's script with impeccable timing and a wonderful sense of humor.

***

When car dealer Charlie Babbitt learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has a savant older brother named Raymond and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray and 4K UHD captures were taken directly from the respective discs.

ADDITION: Mvd Marquee Collection 4K UHD (June 2023): Mvd Marquee Collection's are releasing Barry Levinson's "Rain Man" to 4K UHD. The colors get bolder, and perhaps slightly more nuanced, and the overall image is darker but I think the textures are the notable difference from the 2011 MGM Blu-ray that we reviewed HERE. Although obviously superior to the 1080P I'm not over the moon about the image. I think it's just the way the film looks on digital - a shade clunky. Beside the 4K, the BD looks paler - not lifeless - just dampened by the lower res rendering. So this 4K UHD is positively better despite not remembering what the film looked like theatrically. Perhaps my expectations were too high - it was, unbelievably, made 35 years ago. It just didn't overwhelm me on my system. A second disc Blu-ray is included with the feature and duplicate video extras from the initial BD (see below.)

It is likely that the monitor you are seeing this review is not an HDR-compatible display (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision, where each pixel can be assigned with a wider and notably granular range of color and light. Our capture software if simulating the HDR (in a uniform manner) for standard monitors. This should make it easier for us to review more 4K UHD titles in the future and give you a decent idea of its attributes on your system. So our captures may not support the exact same colors (coolness of skin tones, brighter or darker hues etc.) as the 4K system at your home. But the framing, detail, grain texture support etc. are, generally, not effected by this simulation representation.

NOTE: 36 more more full resolution (3840 X 2160) 4K UHD captures, in lossless PNG format, for Patrons are available HERE

We have reviewed the following 4K UHD packages to date: The Changeling (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Night of the Hunter (software uniformly simulated HDR), 12 Angry Men (software uniformly simulated HDR), Branded to Kill (no HDR), Picnic at Hanging Rock (software uniformly simulated HDR), Two Orphan Vampires, The Shiver of the Vampires, Drowning By Number (software uniformly simulated HDR), Serpico (software uniformly simulated HDR), Cool Hand Luke (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Seventh Seal (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Maltese Falcon (software uniformly simulated HDR), Mildred Pierce (software uniformly simulated HDR), Tár (software uniformly simulated HDR), Marathon Man (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dazed and Confused (software uniformly simulated HDR), Three Colors: Blue (software uniformly simulated HDR), Invaders From Mars (software uniformly simulated HDR), Death Wish (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (no HDR), High Plains Drifter (software uniformly simulated HDR), Mystery Men (software uniformly simulated HDR), Silent Running (software uniformly simulated HDR), Dressed to Kill (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Power of the Dog  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Escape From Alcatraz (software uniformly simulated HDR), I, the Jury (no HDR), Casablanca (software uniformly simulated HDR), In the Mood For Love (NO HDR applied to disc), The Werewolf vs. the Vampire Woman  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Blow Out (software uniformly simulated HDR), Night of the Living Dead (NO HDR applied to disc), Lost Highway (software uniformly simulated HDR), Videodrome (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Last Picture Show (software uniformly simulated HDR), It Happened One Night (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Mummy (1932)(software uniformly simulated HDR), Creature From the Black Lagoon (software uniformly simulated HDR), Bride of Frankenstein (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Amityville Horror  (software uniformly simulated HDR), The War of the Worlds (1953) (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Incredible Melting Man  (software uniformly simulated HDR), Event Horizon (software uniformly simulated HDR), Branded to Kill (software uniformly simulated HDR), The Killing (software uniformly simulated HDR), Killer's Kiss (software uniformly simulated HDR.)

On their 4K UHD, Mvd Marquee use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original English language. There are a few sharp separations. The film's effects track doesn't require extensive bass which is notable in the memorable score by Hans Zimmer (Nightmare at Noon, 12 Years a SlaveThe Thin Red LineBroadcast NewsAngels and Demons etc.) with a cornucopia of music including samplings by The Belle Stars, Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Tommy Edwards, Hoagy Carmichael, Etta James, Bananarama, George Gershwin etc. which supports the film's emotional journey. There are Spanish and French lossless DUB options. Mvd Marquee include optional English (SDH) subtitles - and is, like all 4K UHD, region FREE, playable worldwide.

The 4K UHD disc extras mimic the 2004 Special Edition DVD with the three feature length commentaries by a) Director Barry Levinson, b) Co-Writer Barry Morrow and c) Co-Writer Ronald Bass. It's a lot even for hardcore fans of the film - I appreciated Levinson's comments very much and the while the co-writers offers somewhat less in terms of production detail - there is viable information imparted. We also get the original theatrical trailer on the 4K UHD disc.

The included Blu-ray has the feature (in 1080P) and those commentaries plus poaches from the 2011 editions with the two featurettes - The Journey of Rain Man runs 22-minutes and has Levinson detail more production and the 20-minute Lifting the Fog: A Look at The Mysteries of Autism is extremely interesting in focusing on the neuro-developmental disorder that is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. This will be educational for most who watch it. Plus a short deleted scene and the original theatrical trailer (again.)

I have a good friend who is neurodivergent - autistic. She is, without question, one of the smartest people I have ever met. She runs her own business and is extremely kind and helpful. I am privileged to know her. I think we have come along way since Rain Man in understanding this spectrum disorder. This large-production film, brilliantly written and realized, is a wonderful revisitation. Despite Mvd Marquee Collection's
4K UHD release having no new extras (to be fair the original editions were stacked with the commentary trifecta etc.), I did get a lot out of it in this higher resolution - including marveling, again, at the exceptional performances. If you love this remarkable film - this is the way to go for your home theatre appreciation just keep your image expectations in check.
