ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion's Blu-ray of Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai gets top nod this week - a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture looking fabulous in 1080P. Criterion's Blu-ray of George Cukor's romantic-comedy The Philadelphia Story is also a very notable upcoming release. I was very happy to see the Essential Noir, Anthony Mann's T-Men come to Blu-ray with new extras and a commentary. Kudos to Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first narrative feature, Desert Hearts that earns its Criterion Blu-ray treatment. Ditto for the Python-esque Jabberwocky looking magnificent on Blu-ray. While enjoying the films, I had occasional ambivalence to some German-produced Blu-rays this week - as our review reflect individual issues; Howard Hawks' Sergeant York is a wonderful historical bio-piece, Anthony Mann's Bend of the River is a top 100 western and comes to Region FREE Blu-ray from Koch Media, The Giant Claw is one of the cheesiest of 50 + 60s sci-fi flics, as is the more polished Atlantis - The Lost Continent and we also get one of the best war-naval dramas Sink the Bismarck! - all on Blu-ray. Two more Lina Wertmuller sex-power films have made it to Blu-ray in Kino's Summer Night and Ferdinando and Carolina. Sergio Martino's Torso is often considered the sexist of Gialli - on, Region FREE, Blu-ray from Shameless out of the UK. Don't judge by the title - Rawhead Rex is a well-established religious-based creature-feature with some excellent super-scary visual sequences, on a stacked 4K-restored Blu-ray from Kino. Red Christmas is a modern Aussie horror with Dee Wallace. On DVD, Eric covered The Ornithologist - a Portuguese adventure-drama, a Science-fiction thriller entitled Shortwave and a 2017 horror, Devil's Whisper..

“Two types of films: those that employ the resources of the theater (actors, direction, etc...) and use the camera in order to reproduce; those that employ the resources of cinematography and use the camera to create.. .”. - Robert Bresson, Notes on the Cinematographer

Enjoy every minute of your week!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Sergeant York BD - Prize-winning Tennessee marksman Alvin York (Gary Cooper), a recent convert to Christianity, finds himself torn between his non-violent beliefs and his desire to serve his country when recruited to fight in World War I. Kindly Major Buxton (Stanley Ridges) convinces York to engage in battle, where the pacifist's prowess with a rifle earns him honors as he continues to struggle with his decision to kill. Howard Hawks directs this adaptation of the real York's memoirs. Blu-ray Release Date: August 3rd, 2017

Bend of the River BD - Glyn McLyntock (James Stewart) is escorting a wagon train to Portland, when he stops to save Emerson Cole (Arthur Kennedy) from being lynched. The new buddies help fight off a pack of marauding Indians as the settlers bunk down for the evening, but their friendship eventually turns to a bitter hatred fueled by the greed of the crazed Gold Rush fever. Gambler Trey Wilson (Rock Hudson) is choosing sides. Making new vows Glyn must face his notorious past to join the familial settlement on the river's bend. Blu-ray Release Date: August 10th, 2017

The Giant Claw BD - Engineer Mitch MacAfee (Jeff Morrow) spots a UFO while directing a study at the North Pole. But when the Air Force arrives, they cannot find anything visually or on radar, throwing Mitch's reputation into doubt. Soon, though, many airplanes are reporting attacks by a UFO, which turns out to be a giant speeding bird from outer space. Along with mathematician Sally Caldwell (Mara Corday), Mitch tries to determine a way to stop the bird, which has a force field that renders all weapons useless. Blu-ray Release date: April 13th, 2017

Atlantis - The Lost Continent BD - Rejoice, citizens of Atlantis! Princess Antillia, lost upon uncharted seas, has been guided home by intrepid Greek fisherman Demetrios. In a strange act of Atlantean gratitude, Demetrios is cast into slavery. He will endure the macabre House of Hell. Fight for his life before a cheering arena throng in the Ordeal of Fire and Water. And rescue the princess again as they flee the realm's volcanic doom. Welcome to Atlantis, the Lost Continent, where royal guardsmen wear uniforms that could easily be from the wardrobe of Ming the Merciless and where some unfortunate slaves are turned into bovine-headed beasts. Yes, that kind of movie: popcorn-worthy and spearheaded by legendary fantasy film producer George Pal. Blu-ray Release Date: December 2nd, 2016

Sink the Bismarck! BD - Sink the Bismarck is a faithful retelling of the British Navy’s attempts to debilitate the German mega-battleship Bismarck. Based on C.S. Forester’s book and directed by Lewis Gilbert (of James Bond film fame) the real-life naval battle is detailed and fascinating as it delves deep into the successes and failures of one small triumph of the war. We are treated to exposure of massive amounts of information leaving character development to take a backseat. This helps produce an almost documentary-like representation through Edmund H. North’s confident screenplay. Both Kenneth More and the beautiful Dana Wynter are really given no opportunities to shine as the story takes full command of our senses. Blu-ray Release Date: August 25th, 2017

Jabberwocky BD - Amid the filth and muck of England in the Dark Ages, a fearsome dragon stalks the land, casting a shadow of terror upon the kingdom of Bruno the Questionable. Who should emerge as the town’s only possible saviour but Dennis Cooper (Life of Brian’s MICHAEL PALIN), an endearingly witless bumpkin who stumbles onto the scene and is flung into the role of brave knight? The first outing as a solo director by TERRY GILLIAM (Brazil)—inspired by Lewis Carroll’s poem “Jabberwocky” and made on the heels of Gilliam’s success as a member of the iconic comedy troupe Monty Python—showcases his delight in comic nonsense, with a cast chock-full of beloved British character actors. A giddy romp through blood and excrement, this fantasy remains one of the filmmaker’s most uproarious visions of society run amok. Blu-ray Release date: November 20th-21st, 2017

Desert Hearts BD - Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first narrative feature, Desert Hearts, was groundbreaking upon its release in 1985: a love story about two women, made entirely independently, on a shoestring budget, by a woman. In this 1959-set film, adapted from a beloved novel by Jane Rule, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno to file for divorce but winds up catching the eye of someone new, the free-spirited young Cay (Patricia Charbonneau), touching off a slow seduction that unfolds against a breathtaking desert landscape. With undeniable chemistry between its two leads, an evocative jukebox soundtrack, and vivid cinematography by Robert Elswit, Desert Hearts beautifully exudes a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. Blu-ray Release date: November 14th, 2017

Red Christmas BD - Horror legend Dee Wallace stars as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve. When a mysterious, deformed young man named Cletus appears at their door, things soon change from petty insults to bloody, imaginatively orchestrated violence as Wallace attempts to protect her family from the vengeful intruder. The film deliriously infuses comedy, dark family secrets with outlandish gore and adds the always controversial subject of abortion in its blood-stained mix. Blu-ray Release Date: October 17th, 2017

Torso BD - Sergio Martino directs this Italian horror starring Suzy Kendall and Tina Aumont. Two college girls are butchered by a masked killer who leaves a scarf at the scene. A classmate of the dead girls has seen the scarf before - but where? Her attempts to track down the culprit become more urgent as the hacksaw-wielding maniac sets about a killing spree across the Italian countryside. Blu-ray Release Date: September 25th, 2017

Le Samourai BD - In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays a contract killer with samurai instincts. A razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology—maverick director Jean-Pierre Melville’s masterpiece Le Samouraļ defines cool. Blu-ray Release Date: November 14th, 2017

The Philadelphia Story BD - Its witty dialogue, romantic complications, and class-skewering satire are hallmarks of screwball comedy, but George Cukor’s classic The Philadelphia Story doesn’t turn on absurd situations, outlandish behavior, or unpredictable plot twists. Instead, it’s a more mature and humanistic social satire, a comedy of manners skewering every kind of snobbery: not only the class-based snobbery of the rich against the poor — and the poor against the rich — but also the intellectual snobbery of the literate against the popular, and above all the moral snobbery of the self-righteous against the imperfect. Blu-ray Release Date: November 7th, 2017

T-Men BD - The moodily evocative docudrama T-Men stars Dennis O'Keefe as Dennis O'Brien, a treasury agent determined to bring a counterfeiting ring to justice. O'Brien and his partner Tony Genaro (Alfred Ryder) go undercover to gain the confidence of the ruthless Detroit mob responsible for the phony money. The plot, compelling though it is, takes second place to the film's stylish set pieces, superbly directed by Anthony Mann and brilliantly photographed by John Alton. Among the film's most famous moments is the scene in which two-bit hood Wallace Ford is bumped off in a steam bath by sadistic hood Charles McGraw, not to mention the harrowing vignette wherein O'Keefe, posing as a crook, must stand by silently as his partner Ryder is murdered. One of the finest examples of the film noir form, T-Men proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that a film didn't need to have a lush budget, brilliant Technicolor and Clark Gable to score a hit with postwar moviegoers. Blu-ray Release Date: October 10th, 2017

Summer Night BD - Summer Night is Lina Wertmuller's outrageous, and outrageously funny, response to her own Swept Away, updated with the politics and conspicuous consumption of the 1980s. Mariangela Melato stars as Signora Bolk, a self-made tycoon interested in ecological preservation. She is fed up with the terrorists who poach Italy s rich beauty, and as part of a crazy retaliation scheme she hires a former CIA agent to abduct the number one violator, Giuseppe Beppe Catania (Michele Placido). Catania is taken to her villa on a private island where he insists that as a man, he cannot go without sex. She relents and hires two prostitutes to pleasure him. Blindfolded and chained, Beppe realizes that the third woman is none other than the woman who kidnapped him and agrees to pay the $100 million but only with a twist. Blu-ray Release Date: September 19th, 2017

Ferdinando and Carolina BD - In Ferdinando and Carolina (1999), Lina Wertmuller turns her gimlet eye to the 18th century, and hilarity ensues. In the dazzling court of 18th century Naples, against their wishes, young King Ferdinando (Sergio Assisi) will wed Carolina (Gabriella Pession), the sweet 16-year-old daughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. As the monarchies of Europe hold their breath, something unexpected happens. King Ferdinando and Carolina share one common interest a rollicking, orgiastic celebration of the senses, and plunge with gusto into the silken bed sheets to uphold their regal duties. As the court continues on with magnificent splendor, the sovereigns continue to reign, oblivious to the revolutionary tides that are on the verge of tearing France apart and overtaking all of Europe. Blu-ray Release Date: September 19th, 2017

Rawhead Rex BD - A humble Irish farmer decides that it is high time to move that big old stone in his field that has been there seemingly since the dawn of time. This gory horror film, an adaptation from one of noted British-author Clive Barker's short stories, follows what happens next. No sooner does he move the rock when out rushes an enormous, blood-thirsty pagan demon, Rawhead Rex, who immediately goes berserk and begins biting people left and right. Among the bitten is the son of an American professor of history and anthropology. His father immediately begins researching the angry old god and plotting his demise. Blu-ray Release Date: October 17th, 2017

The Ornithologist - Fernando, a solitary ornithologist, is looking for endangered black storks along a remote river in northern Portugal when he is swept away by the rapids. Rescued by a couple of Chinese pilgrim girls on their way to Santiago de Compostela, he plunges into a dark, eerie forest, trying to get back on track. But as he encounters unexpected and uncanny obstacles and people who put him to the test, Fernando is driven to extreme, transformative actions. Gradually he becomes a different man: inspired, multifaceted, and finally enlightened. DVD Release Date: October 3rd, 2017

Shortwave - Josh and Isabel Harris, after suffering the loss of their only child, relocate to a secluded hillside research facility with the hopes of repairing their broken family. After years of trying, Josh and his research partner, Thomas, have a breakthrough involving a cryptic shortwave radio signal and its universal origins. Something within the signal resonates with Isabel and she begins experiencing seeming hallucinations and visions of distant memories. Upon further investigation into the phenomenon, the scientists fear for Isabel’s health while Isabel fears the signal has attracted something sinister to their new home. DVD Release Date: October 3rd, 2017

Devil's Whisper - 15-year-old Alejandro Duran, who comes from a religious Latino family, aspires to one day be a Catholic priest. But when he discovers a mysterious box he unwittingly unleashes a demonic spirit bent on possessing him. Alex must find a way to defeat this evil entity before it destroys him and everyone he loves. On the surface, Devil's Whisper is a psychological horror film about demonic possession but underneath it's a character driven drama about repressed psychological trauma and the cycle of abuse.
