Arrow's 2024 4K UHD of Torso is reviewed / compared HERE
When two
comely coeds at the University of Perugia's summer art
program are brutally murdered, all of her classmates and a
couple associated unsavory types fall under suspicion. When
Daniela (Tina Aumont, THE NUDE PRINCESS) suspects her
childhood-friend-turned-stalker (Roberto Bisaccio,
DEADLY SWEET),
she decides to get away to her family's conveniently
isolated home in the countryside with her friends (lesbian
lovers played by Carla Brait and Angela Covello and "final
girl" Julie played by Suzy Kendall of
THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE) only to be
followed by a couple red herrings as well as the killer.
John Richardson (BLACK SUNDAY) and Luc Merenda (Tinto Brass'
ACTION) also star. |

Arrow's 2024 4K UHD of Torso is reviewed / compared HERE NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Arrow - Region 'A' - Blu-ray - November 18': The new Arrow 1080P transfer is cited as being from a 'Brand new 2K restoration of the film from the original camera negative by Arrow Films'. It offers 3 versions - Italian, 'Hybrid' and English (with the latter having the option of 'Carnal Knowledge' or 'Torso' titles) seamlessly-branched on one dual-layered Blu-ray disc - so the image quality is the exact same. It is the darkest of all releases and has an occasional green/blue leaning but it seems, by a wide margin, to be the best image quality to date. NOTE : For the English version - 'Torso' titles: 'This version features the distinctive title sequence created for the film's US release by Joseph Brenner Associates. This footage was compiled from multiple sources, including a vintage print and a VHS tape. The quality of this unique material is constrained by the condition of these source elements. 'The audio is offered in original lossless Italian and English mono soundtracks (linear PCM 1.0 channel - 24-bit) and optional English subtitles for the Italian soundtrack and optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for the English soundtrack. The, occasionally intense, score by Guido and Maurizio de Angelis (A Blade in the Dark, 2019 After the Fall of New York, The Mountain of the Cannibal God) is suitable to the genre and sounds fine in the uncompressed. Effects, screams etc. are flat but carry depth with an often tested high-end. All good, really.
NOTE: The English audio track on
the original, longer cut has some portions of English audio
missing. English audio for these sections was either never
recorded or has been lost. As such, these sequences are
presented with Italian audio, subtitled in English.
This Arrow
Blu-ray
sports a plethora of supplements starting with a wonderful
new audio commentary by Kat Ellinger, author of
All the
Colours of Sergio Martino. She is 'on her game' and
provides impressive insight into the production and especially
the director. There is a new 34-minute video interview with
co-writer/director Sergio Martino, and a new, 35-minute, video
interview with actor Luc Merenda, a new 1/2 hour video interview
with co-writer Ernesto Gastaldi and a 25-minute new video
interview with filmmaker Federica Martino, daughter of Sergio
Martino. We also get a new video interview with Mikel J. Koven,
author of
La Dolce Morte: Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo Film
plus 3/4 of an hour of the 2017 Abertoir International Horror
Festival Q&A with Sergio Martino. There are both Italian and
English theatrical trailers and the package has a reversible
sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Adam
Rabalaisand the first-pressing purchasers get an illustrated
collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Adrian
Smith and Howard Hughes.
Easily the Arrow is the best, most thorough and complete,
Blu-ray
release of this essential
Giallo film. It has multiple versions and extensive new
extras including the Kat Ellinger commentary. Huge Kudos to all
involved! Strongly recommended!
***
and starts with this title screen:
It runs almost exactly the same length as Blue Underground Blu-ray's Italian version and offers both Italian and English language tracks. The image is in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and has s similar technical transfer to the Blue Underground Blu-ray but, like the old Shameless DVD, some sequences are extremely dark - this may well be accurate. It looks fine in-motion and appears to be a solid 1080P transfer. Audio has linear PCM tracks (both Italian and English options) at 16-bit. It carries the effects, screams etc. well and the De Angelis brothers score is impactful. It has the option of both English or partial English subtitle options and the Blu-ray disc is Region FREE! No commentary but it does have the supplement - Dismembering Torso - a 23-minute interview with Sergio Martino.
One of the most erotic-filled Giallos -
lesbian sex, orgies, prostitutes, upskirt camera angles
etc. The Shameless provides a worthy
Blu-ray
presentation and, at the right price, will satisfy many
Giallo lovers.

ADDITION:
Blue Underground - Region FREE -
Blu-ray -
September 11':
Audio is DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel all around with about 2000 kbps. The Italian version offers an English DUB as well as the Italian language and the English version only has that language track. Screams are potent with a dynamic quality not previously heard on the DVDs. It takes hold of the high end that frequently could sound tinny on the SD transfers. Depth is infrequent but there is some perceived separation. There are optional subtitles offered, for both versions, on the region FREE Blu-ray disc. The same supplements are accessible independent of which version you choose from the first menu screen. We get a 10-minute interview with Co-Writer/Director Sergio Martino entitled Murders in Perugia. This is in 1080P - plus the option of a 4-minute Eli Roth enthusiastic 'Introduction' choice when you select 'play' also in HD. The U.S. opening credits are still there - now in 1080P, as well as the usual tidbits - ex. TV + Radio Spots, poster & still gallery, and trailers. Blue Underground have established themselves inspiring confidence from their legion of fans. Torso aka Carnal Knowledge has imperfection - most probably inherent in the production source but this Blu-ray does produce some impressive sequences - in both video and audio. I anticipate that fans will be genuinely pleased with this Blu-ray package as it provides a more film-like experience supporting the heavy genre appeal. *** ADDITION: Blue Underground / Anchor Bay DVD - July 09': I don't own any of these PAL DVD version so I will have to defer to Eric's comments as definitive when he has a chance. This may very well be a duplication of the out-of-print Anchor Bay but the VOB files are February of 2009 - so while it may be the same transfer - it is also the newest put to DVD for this particular film. From my standpoint the Blue Underground / Anchor Bay image can looks the strongest but is also cropped on all 4 edges but most notably on the top. It can tend to look quite greenish at times but may be the sharpest. It's single-layered and only has two anamorphic trailers as supplements. Subtitles only exist for the Italian opening whether you choose the English or Italian audio option. The latter does not offer English subtitles. There are questions about the running time - as it should be longer (ex. I could not obtain the first capture - the subtitle one - with the same image but the opening was rife with roaming focus sex acts). This does seem to be from an NTSC source as there are no ghosting or combing artifacts. The transfer appears to be progressive as well. Again we will defer to Eric - stay tuned. The film is a fetishists paradise with naked mud-rolling, peering up young lady's skirts and gratuitous nudity of very pretty women. It's pure for the genre and a bit of a hoot. I'm curious now as to if it's the full version as I can't imagine what could have been cut. Gary Tooze *** ON THE PAL DVDs: The dual-layer Italian disc from
Alan Young Pictures sports a fine image (only slightly sharper
than the single-layer UK release) and Italian language track but
the English track is rebuilt from the US version so the track
opens with the guitar sting at the end of the US credits and
features alternate scoring over the opening group sex scene
(which was the title sequence of the Italian and export version)
but since that scene is shorter in the US version, the rest of
the title sequence is filled out with English dialogue from the
post-lecture scene which is then repeated after the Italian
language Perguino lecture in sync with the image track. The
commentary track is of little use to English speakers but the
split-screen comparison to the tinted and natural-light versions
of the marshland sequence is a nice extra (the sequence on the
German disc is untinted as it was in the US theatrical version).
Although the audio on the English and Italian tracks is
pitch-corrected for the PAL speedup, the menu music is
noticeably sped up. The UK and Italian discs presents the film in 16:9 with an
aspect ratio of 1.72:1 while the anamorphic Anchor Bay disc was
matted to 1.85:1 (as it would have been presented theatrically)
although 1.66:1 seems to be the original aspect ratio (both the
Italian and UK discs loose a bit on the top and are slightly
stretched but have the same horizontal information as the German
1.66:1 disc). The out of print German DVD from X-Rated Kult
Video featured an attractive non-anamorphic transfer which was
the first to feature the image track of the art lecture which
was missing from the Anchor Bay disc (which played the audio of
the scene with subtitles over the title sequence). Besides the
aforementioned replacement title card, the German and English
tracks substitute a suspense music cue over the main titles in
place of Guido and Maurizio de Angelis' more lyrical one which
is better suited to the "action" under the credits. The Italian
track featured the original scoring (the German track also
features Italian audio for scenes not included in the export
version). Judging by the supplements in the X-Rated disc, the
original German version of the film derived its image track from
the U.S. theatrical release by Joseph Brenner which featured a
new title sequence and animated title card over teaser footage
from the marshland sequence later in the film and some familiar
seventies library music. As a result, this title sequence is
labeled as the German one while the opening and end credits
ascribed to the US version are actually from the English export
version baring the CARNAL VIOLENCE title (the Italian disc also
does this). The trailer is likewise a hybrid featuring footage
and optical effects from both the Italian and US trailers.
Besides the ten soundtrack cues from the RCA Italy CD - which
paired the score with cues from Bruno Nicolai's score for
Umberto Lenzi's EYEBALL, extended albums of both scores are now
available from Digitmovies - the disc also sports a cool
animated main menu. |
