(aka "Slave of the Cannibal God" or The Slave of the Cannibal God" or "Slave of the Cannibal God" or "The Mountain of the Cannibal God")

Directed by Sergio Martino

Italy 1972

Sergio Martino (director of All The Colours Of The Dark, The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh, Torso) invites you on the trip of a lifetime - to THE MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD for sun, wildlife and... flesh munching natives! You might just never come home...

Ursula Andress (Bond Dr No, 10th Victim, What's New Pussycat) travels to the New Guinea jungle in search of her scientist husband who s vanished in the untamed Green Inferno. Soon, giant spiders, killer crocs and deadly snakes bare their teeth as her expedition, lead by cult-fave Stacey Keach, journeys towards the sacred mountain of the Cannibal God! There a flesh-eating demon will enslave her in an eruption of frenzied orgiastic climax... and full porky bestiality!

Banned as a video nasty , Shameless now reinstates the original dramatic gore and the complete extended explicitness to serve up the world s first 2K-sharp restoration of this ferocious unflinching exploitation treat, to be devoured in all its blood-soaked glory!

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

NOTE: I had heard that Code Red in the US were releasing this on Blu-ray under its Slave of the Cannibal God title, although I don't own to compare, even it if it does exist.

Shameless out of the UK have brought Sergio Martino's notorious The Mountain Of The Cannibal God to dual-layered Blu-ray.  It is described as "restored and re-graded from a new 2K scan. This entirely new widescreen release features previously unseen footage and is the longest ever UK version." The transfer has a high bitrate but can look a bit clunky in-motion. The 2.35:1 visuals are fairly thick and the presentation is reasonably consistent with only a few variations. The images are bright with the majority of the film shot outdoors but a few night scenes and shaded jungle sequences seems to hold up without digital noise. I wouldn't it is a dynamic HD video but it certainly looks superior to SD and the higher resolution, although imperfect - general softness, has advantages over the many DVDs that exist. It, no doubt, looks better than it ever has for home theatre consumption. It starts with this text screen:

I can attest to it being ultra-gory with blood, gore, decapitation, castration etc. scenes - despite the removal of the 'animal suffering'. It also has plenty of Ursula Andress nude, for those keen.

For the audio, Shameless uses a linear PCM 2.0 channel (mono) - 16-bit, in the English language. Effects are quite camera-based - quick edits and fast, brief, close-ups. The score by Guido and Maurizio de Angelis (A Blade in the Dark, 2019 After the Fall of new York, Torso) is suitable to the film's jungle-aura and cannibal-fright elements. It seems to work and the dialogue doesn't suffer much - probably a fine replication of the original production. There are no subtitles on this region 'B' Blu-ray.

Shameless include a brief introduction by director Sergio Martino as well as a short interview with him discussing the Animal Cruelty referenced of The Mountain of the Cannibal God. Included is archival documentary Making-of Cannibal Nightmare with some on-set footage from Sri Lanka and Malaysia and it runs more than 3/4 of an hour - previously available on DVD. There is the alternate Italian title + opening credits sequence, a theatrical trailer. The package has an exclusive limited edition serial-numbered "O" card, a "Cannibal Paradise", a "Snakes and Ladders"-inspired board game (on a card folded inside the
Blu-ray case) and a collector's reversible inlay sleeve with original poster artwork.

Another of the 70's, pushing the envelope, cannibal exploitation efforts. This has some star power with a plus-40-years Ursula Andress still looking fine and Stacy Keach - both advancing the production up-a-notch in terms of class. But it has Sergio Martino's sporadic harshness and a decent story. Fans of this genre should consider this a must-own. It has all the fans would want in terms of the film - and a 1080P, uncompressed audio transfer with some decent extras. Recommended!
