NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Code Red Blu-ray (July 2020): Code Red have transferred Sergio Martino's Slave of the Cannibal God aka Mountain of the Cannibal God or La montagna del dio cannibale to Blu-ray. This special edition includes both the unrated / uncut version, Mountain of the Cannibal God and the R rated U.S. cut (1:24:36.112 / 11.8 Gig / 17.5 Bitrate/lossy Dolby.) As in Jungle Holocaust we have a live animal (lizard) being gutted as one of the probable scenes separating the two versions. The Code Red video is a huge improvement over the UK Shameless 1080P transfer. The green cast on the Shameless is gone and the colors (flesh tones) are far more realistic in the US release. Even with a slightly lower bitrate the Code Red tightens detail, contrast and black levels improve - it's really a huge disparity. On their Blu-ray, Code Red use a DTS-HD Master 2,.0 channel track (24-bit) in the English language. Effects are relatively limited with a score by Guido and Maurizio de Angelis (A Blade in the Dark, 2019 After the Fall of new York, Torso) sounding... suitable to the sub-genre. Code Red offer no subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray. Aside from both cuts the Code Red Blu-ray offers a /4 hour interview with Stacy Keach. There are also theatrical trailers of similar genre fare but none for the film. Like Jungle Holocaust Code Red have an altered Blu-ray version here different from the initial 2018 BD release losing the 24-minute Martino interview, a trailer and the LE slipcover. Another 70's, pushing-the-envelope, cannibal exploitation effort. This has some star power with a plus-40-years Ursula Andress still looking fine and Stacy Keach - both advancing the production a notch in terms of class. It has Sergio Martino's sporadic harshness and a decent story. Fans of this sub-genre should consider this a must-own for the video upgrade alone. Many will prefer to 'pass' due to the graphic sequences or be enticed by Miss Andress's bold nudity. To each his own. *** NOTE: I had heard that Code Red in the US were releasing this on Blu-ray under its Slave of the Cannibal God title, although I don't own to compare, even it if it does exist.Shameless out of the UK have brought Sergio Martino's notorious The Mountain Of The Cannibal God to dual-layered Blu-ray. It is described as "restored and re-graded from a new 2K scan. This entirely new widescreen release features previously unseen footage and is the longest ever UK version." The transfer has a high bitrate but can look a bit clunky in-motion. The 2.35:1 visuals are fairly thick and the presentation is reasonably consistent with only a few variations. The images are bright with the majority of the film shot outdoors but a few night scenes and shaded jungle sequences seems to hold up without digital noise. I wouldn't it is a dynamic HD video but it certainly looks superior to SD and the higher resolution, although imperfect - general softness, has advantages over the many DVDs that exist. It, no doubt, looks better than it ever has for home theatre consumption. It starts with this text screen:
I can attest to it being ultra-gory with blood, gore, decapitation, castration etc. scenes - despite the removal of the 'animal suffering'. It also has plenty of Ursula Andress nude, for those keen.
For the
audio, Shameless uses a linear PCM 2.0 channel (mono) -
16-bit, in
the English language. Effects are quite camera-based -
quick edits and fast, brief, close-ups.
The score by Guido
and Maurizio de Angelis (A
Blade in the Dark,
2019 After the Fall of new York, Torso)
is suitable to the film's jungle-aura and
cannibal-fright elements.
It seems to work and the dialogue doesn't suffer much -
probably a fine replication of the original production. There
are no subtitles on this region 'B'
Blu-ray.
