directed by George Pavlou

Ireland / UK / USA 1986

A Brand New 4K Restoration! He s pure evil... pure power... pure terror! RawHead Rex is a demon, alive for millennia, trapped in the depths of hell, and waiting for release. He is held by an ancient seal, imprisoned for centuries in a barren field near the hamlet of Rathmore, Ireland. In time, this gruesome legacy has been forgotten, dismissed as an odd pre-Christian myth until Tom Garron (Donal McCann, December Bride) decides to plow the field his ancestors knew better than to disturb. The seal is broken and an unspeakable evil is unleashed - on a rampage of blood and lust. Howard Hallenbeck (David Dukes, Gods and Monsters), an American historian on a working vacation with his family, discovers on the stained glass windows of a local church a series of scenes illustrating the reign of terror of RawHead Rex, but the one piece of glass depicting the defeat of the monster is missing. RawHead Rex is on the loose, and he is insatiable as Howard is desperately races against time for a way to stop the vicious monster. Directed by George Pavlou (Transmutations) with a screenplay by horror legend Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Candyman, Nightbreed, Lord of Illusions).

***

A humble Irish farmer decides that it is high time to move that big old stone in his field that has been there seemingly since the dawn of time. This gory horror film, an adaptation from one of noted British-author Clive Barker's short stories, follows what happens next. No sooner does he move the rock when out rushes an enormous, blood-thirsty pagan demon, Rawhead Rex, who immediately goes berserk and begins biting people left and right. Among the bitten is the son of an American professor of history and anthropology. His father immediately begins researching the angry old god and plotting his demise.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray September 20': Kino's steelbook is also a 4K-Restored image like their 2017 Blu-ray... but it is a different, more robust, transfer with a higher bitrate.  This shows in richer black levels, warmer skin tones and slightly superior contrast. It still supports the grain structure but is a better image - even in-motion.

Audio, subtitles and region code are the exact same (see below.)

Extras (similar menus) seem to include everything from Kino's previous Blu-ray with the commentary etc. and Kat Ellinger liner notes essay leaflet (minus the LE slipcase) but have added two new supplements; both that appear to have been on the UK Arrow edition from 2018; Growing Pains: The Children of Rawhead is a 14-minute interview with actors Hugh O’Conor and Cora Venus Lunny and Rawk ‘n’ Roll: The Rex Session which spends 1/4 hour with composer Colin Towns (Born of Fire). Other than that it's an appealing steelbook case!

So this is an upgrade in video, extras - all in a sturdy steelbook case (limited to 4,000.) I'll repeat - "Don't judge by the title - Rawhead Rex is a well-established religious-based creature-feature with some excellent super-scarily-realized visual sequences. The demon, itself, really reminded me of the one in Jacques Tourneur's classic Night of the Demon. I really enjoyed the Irish locale and I thought highly of this effort."

ADDITION: Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray October 17': Kino's new 4K-Restored Blu-ray transfer is impressive - firstly, we see the film in widescreen (1.85:1) noting the differences from the open matte DVD framing. Colors take some dramatically positive shifts and grain texture is present. It may lean a little blue but the overall 4K-restored image is orders of magnitude ahead of the SD.

For the film's audio, Kino offer a surround bump or original stereo in DTS-HD Master transfers. There are plenty of effects and demon noises with some separation noticeable and plenty of chilling depth. The score is by Colin Towns (Born of Fire) who has worked a lot in TV in recent years. Others may recognize That Eastertide With Joy Was Bright and The Lord's My Shepherd. There are optional English (DH) subtitles and the Blu-ray disc is Region 'A'-locked.

Kino stack their BD with plenty of extras - notable is the rewarding commentary with director Pavlou, moderated by Stephen Thrower, the author of Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents, Murderous Passions; The Delirious Cinema of Jesús Franco and Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci . Good stuff with plenty of details. There are 5 'interview' video pieces; 21-minute with actor Heinrich von Bünau (Rawhead Rex, himself), actor Ronan Wilmot (Declan O'Brien) for a dozen minutes, 23-minute with the SFX/MU crew members; Gerry Johnston (SFX Supervisor), Peter Mackenzie Litten (SFX Creature Effects), John Schoonraad (SFX Mould Maker) & Rosie Blackmore (Makeup Artist) describing details of the effects and their part in that production detail. We also get a 21-minute interview with Stephen R. Bissette, co-creator of John Constantine, instructor at the Center for Cartoon Studies , an conceptual art image gallery, original theatrical trailer and the package has a limited edition slipcase of the new poster art by Sean Phillips- the BD case has reversible art (see below) and lastly is a liner note booklet with Kino's releases and an excellent essay by Kat Ellinger (a member of the DVDBeaver FB group!)

Don't judge by the title - Rawhead Rex is a well-established religious-based creature-feature with some excellent super-scarily-realized visual sequences. The demon, itself, really reminded me of the one in Jacques Tourneur's Classic Night of the Demon. I really enjoyed the Irish locale and I thought highly of this effort. The Kino Blu-ray package is fabulous - 4K restored image, an effective 5.1 bump option, commentary and stacked with interview extras, artwork and essay! Fans of the genre are strongly encouraged to pick this up!
