| Summer Night is Lina Wertmuller's outrageous, and outrageously funny, response to her own Swept Away, updated with the politics and conspicuous consumption of the 1980s. Mariangela Melato (Swept Away) stars as Signora Bolk, a self-made tycoon interested in ecological preservation. She is fed up with the terrorists who poach Italy s rich beauty, and as part of a crazy retaliation scheme she hires a former CIA agent to abduct the number one violator, Giuseppe Beppe Catania (Michele Placido). Catania is taken to her villa on a private island where he insists that as a man, he cannot go without sex. She relents and hires two prostitutes to pleasure him. Blindfolded and chained, Beppe realizes that the third woman is none other than the woman who kidnapped him and agrees to pay the $100 million but only with a twist. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Kino - Region 'A' - Blu-ray October 17': Kino's new Blu-ray is another of the restored Wertmuller transfers. It shows more detail than the DVD - which has some edge-enhancement, the 1080P image is brighter and has more information in the frame - on all 4 edges. The HD visuals can be a bit green but look strong in-motion. The higher resolution gives a superior presentation with the beautiful locations and Camillo Bazzoni's cinematography. Kino use a DTS-HD Master (24-bit) 2.0 channel transfer in the original Italian. Not many strong effects in the film but a supportive score credited to Pino D'Angiò and Lello Greco (the latter his only film credit.) There are optional English subtitles on the Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray disc. Not much in the way of extras - some Lina Wertmüller trailers and the package has a booklet with essay by Simon Abrams. Another interesting film playing upon the male/female power-sex themes. The Blu-ray is certainly the way to view it. For the director's fans - recommended! -Gary + Eric |
